A colleague at work has a Zip 50 for running around town. He is having trouble getting it to run properly. When you open the throttle it will pull off ok but anything near 30mph it starts to bog down. It's had a new piston and rings plus gasket set. He has tried changing the carb and fiddling with the settings. Bad points: Air box has a small hole in it and the choke is missing it's o-rings. Do you think it's an air leak or carb set up issue? It has a good spark, is getting fuel. He has changed the jet as well. A new air box is on the way but we are running out of ideas.

***sorry wrong section, mods please move to bike talk and issues***

They are restricted to 30 mph as standard.Has it been derestricted?

Not too sure. I know it doesn't have the secondary airbox attached to the exhaust.

I vaguely remember there is something in the transmission that caps the speed but Im not really sure.

I think itll be the restrictor, unless its a new issue...any 50 is usually restricted to 30mph from stock

It's hard to explain what it does. When pulling off on a near full throttle, if you close it and reopen it the engine will bog to the point of stall. It also struggles going up hills as well.

50 scooter struggling going up a hill, really? :smt082
Has he considered setting fire to it?

You know slide carbs can bog down if given a big handful anyway? Especially if a bit lean. I'd definitely sort the hole in the airbox and the choke O rings to make sure it isn't sucking air.

So he needs to be gentle on the throttle basically? I had suggested lighting it up already.

Ive got a scooter that i bought to fix and sell on, and it too seems to bog down if you go to WOT from standing, think they need to be eased in. They are crap tho..

If it seems to lose momentum on full throttle it could be squared off rollers in the variable transmission, or that was a problem I found with my old scooter anyway
