Just received my insurance renewal which, whilst the initial cost is down from last year they have made changes I do not approve of!
They have changed my voluntary excess to £100 (previously 0)
And (this bugs me the most) they are charging a renewal arrangement fee of £20 !

What I want to know is, can I cancel this policy then take a new one with the same company, which is coming up cheaper on their site?

Phone them and ask for their best price. Commission, arrangement fees etc are discretionary.

Rang this morning, told them I was not happy with the changes they had made to the policy and that I was getting a cheaper quote from them via the internet.
Long story short, old policy will lapse, new one via internet will start on renewal date!
Saved over £40 for the year and now I can fit the exhaust I have been waiting to fit too!

I think they make insurance quotes up as they go along, I have found on average my renewal quotes are more expensive that starting a new policy.

For instance car renewal came in at £800, which was £100 more than my previous year. I have 8 years no claims, 3 points in 2010 for sp30 and no accidents as well as moving to a better area. Did a quote online and with the same company got a quote for £450, Called them and got that quote instead.

My Bike insurance this year has roughly halved from £850 tpft to £430ish fully comp and that is with me declaring my accident as a fault accident as its still in progress and moving to a higher rated bike from a er6f to a street triple where as if I looked at a hornet or some such it drops to £300 ish. Makes very little sense to me at times.

Most insurance companies hope most people are too busy/forget to look around which is why most policies will auto-renew unless you call them and tell them not to near renewal date. If it does auto-renew then they charge a cancellation fee if the new policy has started. Thieving barstewards the lot of em.
