Ok folks I'm already working on next years GM.

Now, to give me a helping hand what do you want your GM experiance to be?

What kind of roads would you like? (fast and flowing, slow and single track or a mix of everything)
What kind of mileages would you like to do during the day? (Min and Max)
What kind of places would you like to stop? (great views for photos or places with facilities)
How long do you like to ride between each stop? (Time more important than mileage here)

I have two places that are looking good as a base for the weekends fun*

Anything you would like to say just shout (I can always take the huff and tell you too bolt, and probably will ;-) )

*one looks perfect - I'm going up to see them this weekend - they have rooms, cabins, camping, a bar and restaurant in one place and are interested in having us, and most of all they are right on one of the best roads in Scotland.

350 miles on gravel and pot hole ridden single track roads with lots of fag/pee breaks.

failing that you decide :-)

Its the GM Lance! GM not DAKAR!!! :D

Thanks for your help (and you know I'm gonna PM you so many times about this that you'll hate me more than you already do)

Mixture of roads.
200miles Min > 350miles Max
Somewhere decent to stop for lunch. This years lunch stop was spot on.
45min > 1hr between stops

Oh and dry weather.:sunny:

Lodges or rooms. Pub, off-licence and chippy in walking distance.

Apart from that, not bothered. I'm there for the beer. Is there normally a ride-out or something? :)

Speedy Claire
10-07-13, 07:52 PM
Fast and flowing roads combined with beautiful scenery and minimum number of single track road.

Stopping points with facilities.

Mileage prob no more than 150 to 200 for me bearing in mind that folk may have travelled a long way up there the day before and also may have a long journey home the following day.

Maybe it`s worth considering an early finish point on the rideout for those who are feeling a bit jaded but the option of a few more miles for those who haven`t had enough?

Facilities as we had at Fort Augustus were brilliant with a combination of shops/pubs with food/chip shop but I imagine it`d be difficult to find that great combination elsewhere??

Not too bothered about number of miles between stopping distances.

Not sure if it was the venue or the timing but GMVI was positively midge free for me, a real bonus :smt026

:)2014 is a long way off--------what about 2013 and a half?

Hopefully we will still have a couple of months summer left this year.

carelesschucca
11-07-13, 08:38 PM
I doubt I'll be able to do that for the group... I'm away in Wales with some lovely loons next month and in Majorca in Sept...

I did hear conversations about there being an Applecross run later in the year but its not my spot... fingers crossed that happens because last years Applecross adventure was brilliant.. :-)

Family BBQ for some old gits birthday that Sat.
That's two good venues on that weekend as the Lancaster Bomber is the same dates.

carelesschucca
12-07-13, 09:29 PM
Yes I know its a year away but.....

The MacDonald Hotel is perfect for us... Only one issue... They only have 3 weekends free in July/August. 4-6th & 25-27th July and 29-31st August.

What do you think, do we take a chance and book a weekend now and hope it doesn't clash with things?

Do I set a poll or make an executive decision?

Oh we're having none of this Egyptian politics no shooting me if you don't like what you get.

andrewsmith
12-07-13, 10:51 PM
4-6th of July works for me if I'm allowed to sleep on Saturday night and a 5 am start on Sunday upsets everyone :)

Blue Flame

Following a quick search the only thing coming up at the moment which clashes with any of those dates is the Commonwealth Games (23rd July - 3rd August). Not an issue for where we are other than potentially heavier traffic for those coming up from the deep south.

I reckon we should go for the 29-31st August date. Something to look forward to nearer the end of the season :)

HaHaHa - don't offer choices - just tell them !!! Never gonna keep everyone happy.

(Middle date suits me best - LoL)

Listen to Nike on this one -- JUST DO IT.

haggis
13-07-13, 08:22 PM
4th-6th sounds good, I'd have a birthday rideout!!

I don't think you can afford to worry about clashes. People choose what they want to go to most, and if they are sensible (some not so) that should be the GeeEmm, lol.

carelesschucca
13-07-13, 09:08 PM
Well one thing you can count on is the GM route WILL NOT go to Ardnamurchan lighthouse. 25 miles just to get there and it took an hour!

ethariel
13-07-13, 09:11 PM
Any of those date will give my boss a hernia so I'd be happy with either of the 1st 2 dates (end of Aug a bit iffy for me).

Rideout Distance - well i have a good 500- 550 to get there so a route that can have an early dropout may be good 9that or 10 laps less on the loop lol)

andrewsmith

Dammit! I miss that by a day, was going to try and fit in Applecross again on Friday, d'oh!

I do quite like Claire's point about not having an overly long rideout on the Saturday, owt more than 200 miles will be a bit much when you're looking at 300+ miles the days before and after. But in the right weather we could be out all day, we got back early I thought this year...could have had more photo/lunge stops etc.

carelesschucca
15-07-13, 11:13 AM
My idea at the moment is a two loop route, with a late lunch back at the base. It will need to be tested and fettled.

First loop is about 140 miles and according to Google maps about 4 hours riding (three stops)
Second loop is about 100 miles (one stop)

There's also nothing to worry about with the locals they're ever so friendly (bring skin so soft) but I'm thinking that most of the evening will probably be spent in the bar, the drinks are cheap, a pint of Trade Winds was £3 and a Jack and coke was £2.30.

BUMP.

Just writing stuff on my calender and got excited thinking about this and other rides planned for this year

carelesschucca
06-01-14, 01:15 PM
I'm trying to get excited about it.

Might help if I did as I'm organising things. Most of the ground work is done, the provisional route is set, just needs a wee test run and we're good to go.

All I'm willing to say is the route has a ferry and we go along the northern side of Loch Leven 3 times.

As for food and the lunch break I was going to ask The MacDonald Hotel if they'd be willing to do a soup and sandwiches deal like we got in Applecross last year.

What would be nice folks is a wee heads up on who's booked what (room, cabin, or camping)

carelesschucca
06-01-14, 09:06 PM

Not booked anything yet as I am pretty lazy, will get on that pretty soon though.

Excited yeah, but basically just excited for summer and getting the bike back out as for the first time I have garaged it for the winter. Needed a bit of work done after rolling through a couple of winters etc. Should be running sweet with rebuilt front brakes, braided lines, chain n sprockets with new scottoiler, sorted radiator (some may know why that was required...) and some other bits. Might even get the fairings fixed too heh.

So yeah, roll on summer!...

What I want to know is do I get a concession for being a pensioner and only having a half a bike if I attend. I think it will take me three days to get there,an extral 4hrs to do the circuit and three days to get home again. Mr Smith you are nearer the truth than you think with your photo.

Yes there's a plan to head up to Applecross on the Sunday. Idea was book in for a couple of nights have a few refreshments then a loop round Skye on the Monday and back to the Applecross Inn for fine food and more refreshments.
