Swingarm play - Pointy [Archive] - SV650.org

Hi guys im new and yes ive already had a bit of a search with some mixed results!

Basically i have just bought a K3 650S pointy and on the MOT its got a advisory notice about slight swingarm play.

When you lift the weight from the rear of the bike i can feel at a guess 2/3mm of sideways movement at the chain adjuster area/rear of the swingarm?

Now from what ive seen some people say its normal and others dont, personally im not happy with it as it must effect the bike say when you hit a bump mid bend?

What do i need to fix this and costs involved? the bike is a 2003 and has done just under 17k

this is perfectly normal and to 'fix' it you need to shim the bushes.

Can i buy a kit that includes these shims?

also is it likey that the bearings will actually need to be replaced or just re greese and fit shims?

there is nowhere that sells the shims. there is however a kind member on the forum who can make them.

depends on the state of the bearings.

You need to make sure if the whole swingarm is moving side to side parallel the axis of the bike, or cocking side to side. The first might be fixed by shimming the poor factory fit end play, the second won't and indicates worn bearings and/or bushes.

At 17k I'm suprised if it's knacked. The Mot tester may be unaware that it is 'factory spec' play.

Both true - I'd still make absolutely certain of what I was dealing with before I did anything about it.

Add to this that I've seen every bearing you can imagine duffed in no time at all - age and mileage are no guarantee whatsoever.
