Alan's August Applecross Assault 2013 Edition…………I enjoyed last year's Applecross weekend, so I'm doing it again.
Anyone up for it this year?
Leave Glasgow around noon on Fri 23rd August for a DRY & SUNNY run up to Applecross.
Head home after brekky on Sun 25th.
I can't get anyone to watch Wendy, so I'm bringing her……….No room for my tent when I'm 2-up, so that means I'm in a camping hut.
For camping, you don't need to book (but I'll give them a call out of courtesy when I know numbers).
Brekky at the campsite.
Dinners at the excellent Applecross Inn.
Saturday will either be a lap of Skye, or more likely a run up to Ullapool for lunch.
The Plan.....
Meeting at 12:30 on Friday at Esso petrol station on Dumbarton Road (next to Little Chef).
That's the important bit. Will leave there at 1pm.
From there it'll be Tarbet, Crianlarich, Tyndrum and Fort William.
We'll stop at Morrisons in Fort William for fuel, scooby snacks and pee-pees (you must try, even if you don't need).
Then we'll push on to Applecross.
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=Dumbarton+Rd%2FA82&daddr=Applecross+Inn,+Shore+Street,+Strathcarron&hl=en&sll=55.935212,-4.517773&sspn=0.005312,0.013036&geocode=FfyBVQMdJBm7_w%3BFY1abAMdbEGn_yGHp1eq2M293 CkRZitmnYGOSDGHp1eq2M293A&t=m&mra=ls&z=8
The ride on Saturday can be discussed in the pub on Friday.
The return trip on Sunday will be the reverse of Friday, except that I'm doing Oban, Inverary, Dunoon, ferry to Gourock and then home to Troon.
If you're coming, please PM me your mobile number if I don't already have it.
That's it guys :smt023.

Yeah Alan you're a star :smt023
Ullapool please, I've never been.
To be honest I said I was gonna go to North Wales with Chris, Hong and Dave. But can't really afford that.
I might be able to do this if the Gaffer comes along. I'm already in discussions with the funds manager about financing and whether the toilets are going to be up to a high enough standard in Applecross...
I also might head off a little earlier and get you at North Ballachulish as I'd like to pop in and say hello again to our hosts for next year :)

Leave it with me..
Yeah well up for this, unsure if on my lonesome or with pillion attachment just yet!
While Skye was superb I am glad we are heading further North, I was going to suggest the same!
i'm sure you all do this deliberately and that you are all members of a 'pizz Lance off club'.
only kidding. have a great time, wish i was going but the Applecross road scares me to shizz, never ever again am i riding on that road. plus i have used up all my brownie points this year.

Ullapool please, I've never been.
The shocking things you find out about people on here...
Working I'm afraid, which is a shame because it's bound to be a bloody good laugh.
That would be my fourth AppleX by bike this year! I might go. But then again might just join you for the scoot to ullapool on Sunday as its equally fab but I've not been in ages.
Will see how I get on this weekend.

I think they only take bookings in person. I was gonna pop in as soon as we
arrive to ask about a table.
We can't really book anyway, coz we don't know when we'll arrive.

You've a whole morning to prep up :-)

Well I decided to get my ass out to put air in the tyres before it got dark and probably a good thing I did. As I was doing the back tyre I spotted this:
http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u472/fac83ajc/Nail1.jpg (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/fac83ajc/media/Nail1.jpg.html)
What looks like a big nice nail/screw in the centre of the tyre. Happy days! Basically decided at this point get it home and take it out and see what's what. There was no way I was riding it like that over any distance for obvious reasons, so it was a case of pull it out and pray...
http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u472/fac83ajc/Nail2.jpg (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/fac83ajc/media/Nail2.jpg.html)
So I take it out and here is how it looks, fortunately was in the tyre at a sharp angle with the point toward the right. The flat shiny part was flat against the road. Leaving my tyre looking like this:
http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u472/fac83ajc/Nail3.jpg (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/fac83ajc/media/Nail3.jpg.html)
And closer inspection of screw...
http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u472/fac83ajc/Nail4.jpg (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/fac83ajc/media/Nail4.jpg.html)
Going by the flat part being flat on the road I think I am right in showing here it could only have been into the tyre by a max of 8mm and that's not taking into account the curve of the tyre coming in on the right. Probably around 5-6mm at the deepest really...
Soo, votes. Would you consider this okay to ride. I think it's okay considering the actual treads of the tyre are probably more that 6mm deep. May have gotten lucky while I was cursing my luck when I first saw it...

If you can afford it I'd get a new one
Yeah likely soon but it's not money, it's time is the problem as we head off tomorrow avo. No way of getting another tyre on there and I probably couldn't afford it til the end of the month as well.
sputnik
22-08-13, 11:23 PM
Much as the impressive ballistic analysis and health & safety considerations are, what really matters is that CF's list for Applecross attendees definitely said 'who is 100% coming'. As such, if your name is down, no excuses are acceptable!
Obviously this means I'll awake to a flat tyre &
battery!
Seriously, I'm no tyre technologist but I'd ride it if it's not losing air and the damage appears surface only. How many times do you check your tyres and see some sign of a gouge etc that obviously had something in that has since been spat out without being any the wiser? I do hate that Russian roulette of pulling something out a tyre and waiting for the pfsssst though!
I barely ever check my tyres, in fact, almost never. Just so happened as I was filling it with some much needed air I happened to be staring at a shiny metal thing!
So long as my back tyre aint flat as a pancake tomorrow morning i'll be at Dumbarton :)

Wendy and I had a great wee weekend guys......Thanks for your company ;).
We sure knocked it off with the weather, which makes a beautiful place even beautifulerer and the riding even better.
It was nice to get a couple of surprise visits.
Kate day tripped just to get fish and chips and to make sure we all had a drink.
Haggis and MrsHaggisMcAmanda came for a one nighter and to see the awesome sunset, which I'd booked and paid out of my own pocket.
Saturday's ride to Ullapool was excellent, apart from someone nicking some rubber off my back tyre. I've only got one speed setting (medium), so it
didn't affect my weekend, except having to tell Wendy "It'll be fine" every time we stopped :---).......... and it was fine .
Sunday's ride home was via Skye and the cool wee Glenelg Ferry. Well worth the detour.
A nice wee weekend with a nice wee bunch of &$%£&£'s............ Missing you already :thumright:.

Thanks all for a great weekend. Spot on! ( except for the canine midnight chorus! )
Yesterday didn't quite go to plan . .
Went over to the east coast & bagged the ' Hill of Many Stanes ' for the photo comp & then changed my mind about JOG, cos it was near. Big mistake - hate to say it but it doesn't look to be your country's finest outpost :(
Anyways, time for home . .
Ended up in Edinburgh where a guy with L plates told me my rear light was kaput. Couldn't get at it, so made cautious progress. took ages to find the ring road, but did see all of the new tram system, lots of it more than once!
Down A68 via Jesmond, using my 'third eye' to spot traffic catching me & since it was by now a bit foggy there was a bit of that.
Eventually hit A1 and reckoned the only problem was others catching me, so made sure that didn't happen - silly but made it at quarter past three this morning!
. . oh, and the dog wanted a drink at half past six.
Signing off: your jaded scribe
Thanks again one and all.
Oh, Dean - did you get a pic of the stripper? ;)

Well, it wasn't quite 3am for me, but just after 1am on the Sunday morning. After sitting in splendid sunshine up in Applecross, I had to put the 'proofs on at Cluanie Inn (?). Even at that, the headlight was picking out the midgies in the rain, in the dark!! The little rascals bit my face when I stopped to take photos on the way up. Even though I had my helmet on, I have bite marks around where the cushion/lining of my helmet met my face!
Still glad I went up (apart from when the deer ran across my path - don't these animals know I'm frightened of the dark as it is!!).
Well, mission accomplished with running in the new brake pads and new front discs.
Great to see everyone again! Here's hoping that there's not ice on the roads when I meet up again!

Aww sounds like an epic weekend! Wish your mountains weren't so far away  That Applecross sunset is a stunner. That was one thing I missed out on last month, getting in any Highland sunsets.
Lovely to see you all heading onto the Glenelg Ferry, did you all get a sticker? :-P

Oh aye and this was what I was rambling on about in the pub RE:-Mars and it's twinning with Glenelg. Linky (http://mars.nasa.gov/blogs/index.cfm?FuseAction=ShowBlogs&BlogsID=246)
Oo an interesting read indeed. Only thing they neglected to mention: Glenelg's very own Sea Eagle that goes by the name of Victor and fishes in the Kylerhea Strait!
Went over to the east coast & bagged the ' Hill of Many Stanes ' for the photo comp & then changed my mind about JOG, cos it was near. Big mistake - hate to say it but it doesn't look to be your country's finest outpost :(
Exactly what I thought Dave, a bloody long way for no real gain. I was lucky enough to have the time to go the Durness route which is truly breathtaking. I take it you went a more direct route?

Aye, fair point. So what time of day did you arrive at JOG? Apparently the sign doesn't live there 24/7 because of vandals, I hope there was a sign there for you to find at least!?!

15.52 Sunday.
Didn't even kill the engine or take my helmet off - nothing to see here - so sad.

Sorry it's late ( & North of the Border)

Bike got its post-Applecross wash today in the rain and darkness!. I could have sworn I heard a hint of sarcasm in its voice when it said thanks.
