Melting Tarmac & parking.

Came out of work yesterday to find my bike looking leaned over a bit more than usual. On closer inspection the kick stand had sunk into the Tarmac a good inch.

I normally park under cover at work but yesterday I had to park out in the open in direct sun for the afternoon. I'll be using a puck under the stand if I have to park there again. Glad it was only the afternoon as if it had been all day I fear I may have returned to a toppled bike.

With these temperatures set to continue I thought I'd post a heads up. This could be just a bad bit of road surface but I suspect the majority of Britain's roads/car parks are just as cack.

In a nutshell, most Tarmac begins to melt at 50C. While ambient temp may only be upto 30c, temp in direct sunlight and low wind conditions could be over 50c. So basically, park in the shade to make sure your chosen bay isn't going to melt while you're away!

I came back one day to find my ZX6 on its side for exactly that reason. Always carry a side stand puck now :)

I once parked at Chessington to come back to my bike to find somebody had put a squashed can under my stand as the tarmac was melting. Thank you to them.
The puck is the way to go, even if just to be on the safe side...
