View Full Version : Contemplating a different bike

I'll likely get some stick for this but I can't get a particular bike off my mind, I'm gonna line up a demo ride on one very soon and take it from there:

The Victory Hammer S...

I am starting to think I need to slow down a little and get the SMT part-exed against one...the SMT is a great bike no mistakes but I am thinking it might be time to enjoy a big muscle bike with uber torque and comfort

I am thinking if I have a hammer I'll then get a cheap dual sport for winter and bad weather in general, the hammer will be for joy rides and weekend touring.

They have a 180 mile tank range with 50MPG, which for an engine getting on for 1.8L that ain't bad...They seem to hold their value well too...only down side I see are the scraping of pegs, especially after getting used to the SMT in the twisties

review of the earlier slightly smaller engined 2010 model:

Am I just having a moment? mid life crisis looming? Demo ride will make or break the decision I guess...

Pansy :p
Have a different kind of crisis and buy a blackbird or 'busa.

I've already had my licence suspended once before, if I got a Busa I would get too carried away...I enjoy the grunt and acceleration of a big engine and want to try and stop enjoying the top speed....hence the cruiser...I did like the idea of a Diavel but they also have too much bhp and top end too

following my second major op on the knee; there was a very real possibility I would end up with extremely limited bend, I looked at the "feet forward" choices available.

I had a two hour test ride on a Victory 8 ball

http://cdn2.bikesevolution.com/pics/b6/07/Victory-20Hammer-208-Ball-2012_1.jpg

Was impressed by the build quality and modern aspects of the bike, defiantly no harley clone, bit weird riding position and mini roundabouts are something else, but given time I reckon I could live with one.

Fortunately things went better than expected and I didn't need to go in that direction.

Cheers Mark.

I've had a look at one already and agree the build quality and finish is nice. The demo ride is lined up for Saturday if it doesn't rain so I'll get to see what it's like to actually ride...

I could get the Hammer 8-ball instead of the sport, people have locked up the front tyre with the single disc so having just one ain't an issue...they don't have an 8-ball to test ride where I am heading though...might get some time on a Victory Judge too if I can though, like those as well, smaller width rear so mini roundabouts shouldn't be so bad but it still has the same lump in it:

Assuming you're on about the engine size I've gone from an SV650 to an SMT990 and then maybe a Hammer S @ 1.7L next, all in 3 years of getting my licence. Having a bigger engine is nice, especially if it's a V-twin...do a demo ride on any bigger bike and see what the appeal is for you.....

Down to 3 possibles now:

* Victory Hammer S
* Victory Judge
* Triumph Thunderbird Storm

Demo's on the first 2 this weekend hopefully and a demo on the TB next weekend if available

Matt-EUC

Triumph Trophy?

kaivalagi
25-07-13, 07:29 PM
Nah, not interested in a big sports tourer

This may just be something I need to try out on a demo ride or 3 and I may just come back with a "what was I thinking" but I am liking the idea of a muscle cruiser, just wondering if the low ground clearance will put me off...the Thunderbird Storm is the better handling of the three I think.

If only Triumph did the TB Storm in this finish:

If you plump for a Victory Hammer, don't forget the extra expenditure on leather apparel

Aresless chaps, 10 gallon cowboy hat, waistcoat, wallet on a chrome chain etc etc ;)

bit of advice, give it a fair go, took me 10-15 miuntes to get used to the riding position, I found an empty carpark and done some slow speed turning which is a different technique to normal bikes, but easily learnable , the wheelbase is long and the engine is all torqure, after a while it all fits into place.

Have fun.

I wondered when I would get a reply like this, thanks Rich! I'll not go as far as tassles and a **** pot :)

I may well soon be the only cruiser rider in Norfolk with a full face helmet and textiles :)

Thanks, Yeah, I'll be sure to give it a little time, I went from sports clip-ons to supermoto which was quite a change, I'm sure I'll get my head around this with time too...may take a little longer though

I like the look of the Judge, my only concern is the "Matt" finish and it's durability, rubbing causes it to go shiny and it's almost impossible to match for touchup without doing the whole panel, had the same issue with the Triumph street triples.

I would've hated you to be disapointed :mrgreen:

Them black ones look cool, but as Rictus said the finish might not last. Fastbikes had one on long term test, no major issues with it, just except its limitations.

Be interested to hear what it was like to ride for you as I know you don't hang around on the ktm .

Off to Freedom Motorcycles in March for a demo...early in the morning too as there's rain in the PM and no demo rides allowed in the wet :)

Just wondering whether the cornering clearance will put me off....and the weight...we shall see

Well I just found out just how wide the bars are on the Hammer S, 94cm! My SMT with typical wide moto bars "just" squeezes through the gate and that's 85cm; I'd need to remove my gate posts, break away a bit of the side wall and rebuild the gate to accommodate a Victory...and having a 2yr old means I need a gate at all times so it's gonna be a no go...atleast for some time anyway.

So......I think it's time to modify the SMT a little - some LED indicators & rear brakes, an R&G tail tidy and maybe some leo vince cans.....I'll just have to learn to tame the wrist action a bit more

I'm still gonna test ride it tomorrow anyway as it maybe an option post 40yrs of age after I've sorted out the house we've just purchased, I'll let you know how it goes anyway...if I don't test ride it I'll be wondering what I am missing I think

Get a bike you can hack around snetterton, that'll satisfy your lust for speed.

kaivalagi
26-07-13, 07:49 PM
The thought had crossed my mind, an old GSXR/ZXR 750 would do the job nicely :)

It would be nice to have something to not worry about for the winter months though, something that can be dropped and wont break, a smallish dual sport...

I'll worry about my SMT mods for now and lull over the options

maviczap
26-07-13, 07:58 PM
Yes, but an SV is loads of fun round there, but anything that you don't have to worry about chucking down the road is worth getting CBR600, Zx6, GSXR600

kaivalagi
26-07-13, 08:05 PM
Yeah, any of the 600/750 sport models would do for a track bike and winter hack I guess....isn't the zx6 636 model a goodun?

Well I had a great day demo riding the Victory Hammer S, 120 miles around March/Outwell/Mildenhall/Lakenheath/Thetford etc

A couple of pics:
http://i781.photobucket.com/albums/yy91/kaivalagi/Motorbike/Demo%20Bikes/th_VictoryHammerS2010DemoRide1_zpsaae64aba.jpg (http://s781.photobucket.com/user/kaivalagi/media/Motorbike/Demo%20Bikes/VictoryHammerS2010DemoRide1_zpsaae64aba.jpg.html) http://i781.photobucket.com/albums/yy91/kaivalagi/Motorbike/Demo%20Bikes/th_VictoryHammerS2010DemoRide2_zpsf3a454e8.jpg (http://s781.photobucket.com/user/kaivalagi/media/Motorbike/Demo%20Bikes/VictoryHammerS2010DemoRide2_zpsf3a454e8.jpg.html)

And a vid walking round the bike:
GKtlRoXs5C4

List of pros and cons:

+ Finish & Quality
+ Overdrive 6th Gear = 75mph @ 2500rpm
+ Uber Torque pulls from anywhere
+ No chain oil anywhere
+ The Sound Is Frigging Awesome
+ MPG is really good, 180mile tank range with 50mpg easily achievable
+ Massssssive rear tyre, handling was surprisingly okay, the bike needed more input but it was quite a nice thing having to tell it what to do more.
+ I was leaning fairly hard over in places and didn't ground out, but I wasn't doing a Rossi, maybe after a longer time on it grounding would be inevitable but better than I thought it would be

- Poor Acceleration for the size of bike so overtakes need more planning than before, I am gauging it against an SMT though
- Tail bone is a bit sore after 2hrs, the front pegs need to be brought in which is possible, they're too far forward so nothing to brace against when hitting the throttle hard
- Massssssive rear tyre, did make cornering more effort and the bike understeered on exit but all this is just something to get used to...when cornering you just need to push the lean longer and after you start accelerating out, didn't take long to get the feel for it.

The pegs can be moved, either via an additional bracket system @ £120 or by swapping out the whole peg/lever assembly with a Victory Judge equivalent at a cost of £160 (difference between old and new)...the later brings the peg level with the sump which would mean much more comfort I think and the ability to brace onto something.

Trade in offered wasn't great @ £6K for my SMT but on the flip side free stage 1 matt black exhaust system and 2 yrs (up to 7500miles) free servicing on a unregistered 2010 bike for a lower than RRP price

I WILL get a cruiser much like this but I think it will wait for 2 years, get an older S/H one and then I'll keep my SMT too :) I do like the idea of getting the wife on the back and going for weekend rides on one...

Anyone who hasn't ridden one ought to, it's an experience and has quite an appeal even without the ar$eless chaps and cowboy hat ;)

Nice bike but high bars and white wall tyres are not for me :-) edit: Have a look on ebay for this 300939127825, the only 2nd hand one I've seen about

They'll have more stock of the Judge next week but no demo to try :-( Gonna go have a look at one next weekend and see what the riding position is like, and maybe ride a Vegas just to see what a narrower rear tyre does for them...

Great review there Mark and I am pleased to see it was subjective and not just "it was rubbish"! :)

I have found the Hornet a great bike for slowing me down - 80-100 is usual hooning speed on it whereas I rode my father-in-laws 1200 Bandit and found myself 100-120+ far too often. Cornering on the Hornet is way more fun though :D Really am loving this bike - its just so "me" 8)

kaivalagi
29-07-13, 06:56 PM
I doubt I would class any newish bike as rubbish to be honest, just different. I bet if I rode a rickety old 60's Norton there would be something about it that made it good for what it was. The only thing that doesn't do it for me is all the bloody chrome, I want to ride more than I clean.

There's too much of a "them and us" stigma with the cruiser scene IMHO, the bike I test rode is different to anything else I've tried but then you could say a sports and a supermoto are equally different.

One thing I found amusing was riding a cruiser I hardly ever got a nod returned from the sports bike brigade but always from another cruiser rider without fail. Once back on the SMT I didn't get many nods returned from cruiser riders either...it's a funny world, they'll all bikes with 2 wheels and are f'ing fantastic in my view :)

This weekend I'm gonna take a look at a Victory Judge and hopefully line up a test ride at Lings of a Thunderbird Storm, and if the bike isn't toooooo massive and overwhelming in size / weight, a Rocket III Roadster too :)

Was that vid filmed off Wangford road next to Lakenheath base?

Just found that it'd be cheaper for me to insure a £11K or so Victory Judge than an £8k or so Tiger 800. Neither is going to happen in the foreseeable future but interesting all the same.

Yep, I turned off where you go to view the planes and did a quick walkaround the bike there and had a sit down in the sun for a bit, nothing to see though, thought it was worth a shot...

I'm with Skip on this, if you like the bike get it!

The Buell has slowed me down, it is a totally different ride to anything else I've owned and I love it, although there is part of me that still yearns for that performance and ease of application you get from a big IL4!

Almost 1 week after riding the Hammer S, I still have a want to ride that big 1731cc lazy torquey lump...

I've booked my demo ride on the Thunderbird on Saturday at Lings in Watton, I'll likely take a ride on the Rocket III too if it's not too scary big in the flesh...

Get this though, maybe I've just been lucky with demo rides so far, but at Lings they want £15 off me to cover the insurance for a day's riding...either than with a £250 excess or they can give me a £2500 excess policy for naught...

Aren't you a bit young to be buying one of those cruisers! ;) I'm not sure buying a big, heavy and slow(er) bike is the right way to control your lead fist. Do some track days on the SMT, it'll give you a different perspective on road riding.

kaivalagi
01-08-13, 06:02 PM
Just for sh1ts and giggles go and take a big 1700cc+ cruiser for a demo ride so you know what I am on about, it's a completely different animal to what you or I have right now

I don't like the idea of riding my daily driver to and then on the track, and I'll likely keep the SMT now even with a cruiser in the garage too, just might be a little while before I get one now. I just bought aftermarket pipes and will be fitting new Angel GTs on Saturday so it's staying for some time yet! A little longer term the SMT will take a back seat, with the cruiser taking up the role for long days out and touring with the wife.

I reckon I can get away with 2 bikes, the wife drives the car and I don't, so I will only have 4 wheels at my disposal too :)

So had a really good set of demo rides today on 2 bikes...a Thunderbird and a Rocket III

I wanted to demo a Thunderbird Storm but demo'ed on a standard Thunderbird which was near enough.

The thunderbird was nice but I did ground out, to my surprise, the right peg a few times on roundabouts. Strangely this is something I didn't suffer with on the Victory Hammer I demo'ed last week and it has supposedly less clearance. The brakes and suspension were really nice but I wasn't as impressed with the engine as I was with the Hammer to be honest, good but not great to my mind. Out of the hammer and TB I would go for a Hammer.

The Rocket was freaking insane and I loved it, I got into pushing on the pegs to get it cornering quicker and was just amazed at the sheer torque when twisting back the throttle in 3rd, 4th or 5th at 60mph...awesome! No better work for it. And if you get it into 5th gear ASAP you can be a little more sedate with the power and take it easy...in theory....the bike was also pretty good in town too for the size of engine, no low down vibrations, all the way from bottom to top revs it was very "clean"

Build quality was outstanding and the finish really nice. The shaft drive was a nice touch too, no mess for sure...

Crazy that this bike is only £400 more than a Thunderbird Storm...no contest really.

That's just it, alright so it's no SM in the twisties but it ain't all that bad on the bends when giving it some beans either, the pick up exiting bends is just out of this world which makes up for a lesser entry speed IMHO. I think I will be wearing 3rd gear out though :)

Oh and I reverted to the gloss black with red paint job as the matt will look messy quickly I think

Now I just need to find a good but cheap(ish) powder coater who can do a nice ceramic coat on the exhaust and normal powder coat on odds and sods, I don't want all the chrome one bit! Atleast the "bearclaw" on the roadster is now black on the 2013 version...

It will be just the usual run in of no fixed RPM (i.e. no long motorway runs which isn't a problem) and keeping below the top half of the rev range (which is a problem :cool:)...maybe I could meet you somewhere closer to home as I'll be leaving Watton...

Your mate needs a new pair and to tell her what HE wants as the rider of the bike...or is he just a chauffeur lol

The service interval on all Victory bikes increased to 5K after 2012 I think, when they introduced the new gearbox with the neutral finder gizmo...if you were out of warranty I think you could get away with doing the same on the older versions anyway...the dealer I spoke to said much the same

I would never ever ever get a vision, those things are vile ugly things! The only victories I could ever entertain are the Hammer S and the Judge as both have a blackened out finish (only the Hammer S has good front brakes though, why they couldn't put twin discs on all of their range I have no idea!)

Your mate should have got a rocket III roadster regardless :thumright:

Still waiting for engine and sissy bars to be in stock and get fitted but I have some running in to do before I use it in ernest yet anyway...I'm trying to keep 3-3.5K rpm until the first service but I've already gotten greedy for the roar a couple of times.

I'll be getting a fly screen and belly pan next month then that'll be it for the time being

I have got to say that engine is VERY tight with no miles on it, I hope it frees up fairly quickly

Very nice Mark - always had a soft spot for the R3 - shame the weather has been pants ever since!

Now you have the dilemma of which bike to use - what a nice position to be in :)

Sods law, all the time they made me wait a little longer again I was thinking "you barstewards, I'll end up with no sunny days once I've got the bike!"...fingers crossed I get a few in before next spring...I want to try and get it run in and the first service done (500 miles) before then...

Now you have the dilemma of which bike to use - what a nice position to be in :)
Quite a simple equation really :)

select case weather
case "Sunny and will remain so"
if Wifey.mentality = "up for it" or
Me.mentality = "chill out time" then

bike = "Rocket III"

else

bike = "SMT"

case else

Quite simple logic really :)
select case weather
case "Sunny spells and will remain as is"
if Wifey.mentality = "up for it" or
Me.mentality = "time to chill and cruise" or
Me.touringmode = True then
bike = "Rocket III"
else
bike = "SMT"
end if
case else
bike = "SMT"
end case

Thought I'd post a new pic of the bike in current form

Just need to cut out bits from the belly pan to allow for the new engine bars and fir it and that'll be it for a while....

Next mods will likely be powder coating some of the shiny stuff, maybe fitting some alternative indicators if I find some I like, and trying to mount the garmin behind the flyscreen. I am holding off on performance mods until the warranty is no more...

But getting the Harley is a step tooooo far lol, any Triumph is allowed, it's British rather than that American stuff :)

Seriously though, very nice!:D
Thanks, roll on the summer weather! I don't want to get it out on the road in this crap again, far too much cleaning to be done!

You rode past me and the wife as you left the bike park on Sunday. Bike looks and sounds lovely.

First ride with the wife on the st1100 up to hunstanton for chippy lunch.

That was your nice and tidy white panny was it? I was parked briefly up that end of the bike park for a quick toilet trip then was off again. Knackered me out that day...pushing the beast around the coast roads for 150 miles :)

Nah, Mine was the nice tidy green panny in the car park down the street. (not really sure why I parked it there tbh ...)

I can imagine. I had a fairly leisurely ride whilst the other half is getting used to her perch.

Yet to treat my other half to a ride on the back....waiting for the better weather so she doesn't get put off :)
