View Full Version : FI warning light on.
Morning all,
So, turned the bike on this morning ready for the run to work, jump on it, slow manovure around the garden to get out of the gate and then the FI light came on, the bike didnt cut out or anything and seemed to allow me to move on throttle.
I turned the bike off and started it again and the FI light didnt appear again. The bike hasnt been used for 4 days but then I have left it longer than that before.
I have just had a look and the oil level looks a little low so that will be the first thing I do this morning, but other than that I am at a loss.
Any idea's guys and gals ? oh its a 2011 SL0 btw with 20k, last service was about 6k miles ago
Cheers
Gav
just a quick update: the oil is actually fine, so ignore that one. The mode of the FI warning is A - so the red light remains lit and the temp gauge alternates between temp and FI hence the bike still runs.
I'm gonna contact the garage this morning as sadly I am no mech and will prob do more damage than good trying to sort out.
Cheers
Gav
Have a search for "FI dealer mode" or "FI dealer tool" on here, there is a tool that can give you a specific fault code. The tool itself is terribly terribly complex and is generally made using a paper clip or similar and takes several moments to fashion, so it's worth reading up on how to get the bike to give you the fault code before putting it into a garage.

I love these forums - ok so dealer tool made, bike started and left to run for a couple of minutes - and the code.... c44 time to look that up.
Cheers for your help jambo. I used speaker wire in the end for the "tool"
last service 6K miles ago... WHAT!
ooohhh and from what i remember C44 is lambda sensor.
its had an oil/filter change inbetween but nothing else...
Yeah searches bring up lambda sensor, and they dont look too expensive ? might even be worth a punt myself... not sure where it is though at the moment, back to google
check the connector. take off the left hand side triangle panel and then separate the connector to check for furred up terminals. my k8 was a bit green inside and once cleaned it was ok. get yourself some proper connector grease and give it a squirt inside (it comes in a syringe) when you put it back together. as routine if i take a connector apart then i always assemble again with connector grease, unless i have done it previous. if that don't fix it then it's new lambda sensor time.
cheers bibio - will take a look now - out of interest where is the sensor located, I have tried to search but cannot find anything with either a diagram or photo. cheers
ok - connections look ok, not too dirty at all, disconnected and re-connected, same fault. I havent got any connector grease unfortunatley.
The bike is booked in to the garage for next week, but if I can do this myself for cheap then it may be worth a punt. Just need some guides -
Look at your exhaust link pipe just by the right rider's footpeg, on the inside of the pipe you'll see a sensor sticking out. It's the only thing plugged into the exhaust itself :)

changing it is easy peezy.
out of interest have you got an aftermarket can on the bike?
ah got it ! that looks easy enough to replace, assuming the sensor unscrews without snapping. MIght give that a whirl
nope, completley standard. So, question to the group. My local garage has just said that it can't do it as its main dealer part only and they want £287 for the sensor then £30 for fitting. Is that a realistic price ?
Have a check of the new parts cost at Robinsons Foundry (http://www.robinsonsfoundry.co.uk/).
Most garages only charge in 30 minute increments, so I'd say the labour's entirely in line with that.
Personally I'd get online and look for a 2nd hand working item and fit it myself, I don't think they have a massive reputation for failure.

only one I've found so far is the sensor from a K9 - not sure if that works in an SL0 ?
last update for today. Just got robinsons to cost for me and the new part is £230 + vat
Ebay only has a K9 available so asked Robinsons if that will work in the SL0 - its the same part so thats a yes - £25 from ebay obv a used part but certainly worth a punt.
Should be here Wednesday so will fit that in evening and fingers crossed.
lambda on the SV is the same from when they were fitted. be careful when fitting as they are fairly delicate items and don't be tempted to 'give it a clean'.
Hi Peeps, so assuming the new part doesnt work tomorrow (or when it comes) I reckon I have 2 or 3 options which I wanted to run past you knowledgeable people.
1) Get my dealer to fix £320
2) Get a plug to cancel out sensor and leave in situ - what would be the downside of this ? and any recomendations ?
3) Spend the £320 on replacing the exhaust and bypassing the sensor, obv more expensive than no.2 but what options are out there for that ? any recomendations ?
Thanks
Gav
The part has arrived so thats my job this evening after work. I have given it a good spray of wd40 this morning so fingers crossed it comes out ok tonight !!
Ok - update time...
Fitted the ebay lambda and still get the same error, joy c44. Let the engine heat up for a bit and the error still there. Turn it off then on a couple of times, still error so not clearing.
This morning I rode into work, approx 22miles max speed 75ish 60% motorway so nice an easy cruise - engine temp normal. The bike rode as if there was no problem at all, perfect in fact.
Get to work, turn the bike off, then on again - wait the 1 min before error comes on, 2 min, 3 min, 4 min... no error !
So, I wonder, as the bike was sitting around for 4-5days without being used and we had massive rain storms whether something got wet and was shorting something out and the run up this morning in the sun and warm enginge has dried something out. Or does the ECU have to "learn" the new lambda ?
thoughts anyone ?
