I had a ratty zzr400 streetfighter once, before my sv. before that i had a honda BROS. I remember them both as expensive disasters, however
over the last few weeks i feel like a change. I want to try without the fairings to see if i like it, but i don't want to do anything permanent, or expensive...yet.

If i take off the fairing i will need a new headlight + mounts, but i wanted to know if there was a way to use the existing instrument cluster without it looking 'stuck on'

Any advice?

simply NO
sorry but as someone whos done this with a curvy ,a pointy and a thou whichever way you do it its a right pita
seems nice and simple and yes it can be done but it always seems like you just need that 1 more part then its OH FECK now that works how do i bodge this, now on these halowed pages there are loads of the work arounds for the issues you will face.
trust me the instrument cluster is the easy bit, a bit of ally plate sorts that, and you can shape a nice back to weather proof it too easy enough
if you want to try a full N conversion sell yours and buy one, if you just want to undress the S prepare for some headaches

well at least forwarned is forarmed

Thanks for the advice , I know what you mean about 'one more part' ,
And i dont think that i could get it looking the way i want, realistically.

Kicking myself for giving away a trailtech vapor when i sold my last bike - buyer did not even know what it was and he was going to take it off!

have a butchers at Janey flakes naked conversion thread , she went to town on it and shows quite a few of the irksome little hangups you'll find
ps as a side note as i said ive done it a few times and each time when i start i say "its ok ive learnt from the last build/ 2 builds / 3 builds".
3 days in and im hitting my head off the desk screaming " when will you learn you irish fool WHEN WILL YOU LEARN" followed by some mild weeping then getting on the phone to half the org for help

Awww, thank you for the mention. However, I did not go naked I just put Renthals on and a few other bits and bobs, turning my bike into a V-Strom!

It was fun, but there were some hiccups along the way. The bike is still a work in progress, there are a few more things I want to do, like sort the rubbish rear suspension that hurts my back with every bump and make it more and more shiny! If this interests you, you can have a look here (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=157076). :D

As for Mr DP, the man is a legend who knows what he speaks of. :smt026

I've done it. My 2p I had a fully faired I would do it again BUT if I were looking to buy I'd buy a naked as it WILL save a lot of agro.

There are cheaper ways to get the naked look/feel but if you're going whole hog expect to pay £100 for a naked top yoke.
You're also better buying a full naked instrument cluster (PROVIDED YOU CAN GET THE BRACKETS AS WELL) and taking it apart fitting all the required parts to your existing clocks.
The switches and cables will all need extending. (buying N versions of the same, be carefull not all pointies have the same wiring so make sure you buy a compatible switch gear).
Not to mention some new bars.
You'll also need mirrors and a new front brake master cyl and brake lines.
The headlight wiring on the pointy and naked are different so you need to decided what you're doing with all the excess wiring. I hid most of mine in the back of the headlight cluster but this required a LOT of swearing.

Case & point it can be done, and if done over time you could even break even by selling your S fairings and headlight HOWEVER this is rarer than finding a naked top yoke so I wouldn't hold your breath.

Plus if you do it you've always got the niggling question... why not do a gsxr front end swap?
