View Full Version : Desnorkling airbox?
As title, reasons & benefits, any cons?
Heard about this being done but not sure why?
Anyone got experience of doing this pros & cons?
Thanks
Bit more unrestricted airflow into airbox.
Pro's - you get a nice noise that some people like and some don't.
Cons - you will get a family or birds/squirrels nesting in there within about 25 mins and render your bike useless.*

Leave the snorkel in place, its there for a reason. A larger airbox opening doesnt always mean more air into the airbox.
The snorkel is quite critical to how the airbox fills and stays full of air.
If you have the inclination this is a good read and does feature the snorkel design on the V-Strom which is relevant to the one on your SV.

Good article Racer, but it's talking about inlet snorkels into the airbox, which the snorkel in the SV filter sort of is, but sort of isn't. It isn't nearly as big relative to the carb/throttle body inlets as the "typical " snorkel the article talks about. I suspect the SV filter snorkel is about quieting intake noise, and also suspect it hinders airflow. Since I really love v-twin intake honking, I'd probably take mine out even if that killed the airflow. But it doesn't. I'm convinced there's an improvement in peak airflow, and it hasn't hurt my mid-range that I can notice.

On the dyno you loose small amount of peak torque and peak horsepower. Inlet snorkels have a big affect on how the airbox works and stays full of air and is just as critical on a fuel injected bike (which the article refers to) as a carbed bike..
If it isnt an inlet snorkel what is it?.

Sorry, I was talking about the curvey with carbs and the snorkel built into the air filter, which I think is a restrictive noise reducer.

Ah I see....yes the carby goes better without that!

Does lifting the front of the tank on spacers (~10mm) offer any improvement in airflow/power?

No all it will do is sound slightly louder.
i just cut my snorkel down, sounds bloody nice when giving the bike some beans but nice and quiet when pottering threw towns.

Has anybody tried ram air into the stock airbox?

Anyone smart enough to apply the formulae in that calsci link to a 650 snorkel or even a 1k snorkel on a 650? Now that would be interesting.
