Evening,

Thinking of changing the colour of my fairings as they are looking a bit shabby. Any one ever used this plasti dip stuff. Looks pretty simple and if it looks naff it just peels back off.

IS this Vinyl wrapping? If so someone on here has done some/if not all of their bike before. Search the threads and it may help you out if you've got any questions on it.

There you go :)

Used it before. Doesn't last too well outdoors, as it's more an interior plastics thing. If you don't like it, simply peel it off. Nice matt black finish too. It does get scuffed pretty easily, so be aware of that.
cheap though.

No it's not vinyl wrapping, it's kind of like a spray on plastic. If you do a search on YouTube for plastidip there's loads of videos (I'm on my phone and can't be bothered to find a link)

Try some on a test piece of something smooth and painted. If you like it, do it.

I bought a can about 5 mins ago on ebay to have a bash on my knackered old fairings. I'll test run one fairing and let you know how I get on.

Good shout. I tried to do a calliper rebuild video last week, but we all know how that went, so I got distracted and didn't get it finished.

ohhhhh ive seen a vid of this now.
Looks quite good. Have a new colour bike every year, seems super simple to do tbh.

Let us know how you get on. Thinking I might leave the tank but do the lower fairings. Will post up some picks when done.

Having read the website, it seems to have "limited resistance to petroleum based products", so if you do the tank (as I will if my test works out ok), seems like mopping up any spills at the petrol station is a priority.

I saw that to. There is a sort of lacquer that you can put on that will give it a bit more protection and give it a sort of gloss finish. Now I've just got decide a colour.

The gloss makes sense, but I'm going to do this cheap as possible! Just bought one can to test run it. Going to spray the rear fairings under the pillion seat so I can ride the bike without it looking ridiculous (it'd look stupid if I tested it on just one side fairing). Will see how it looks and holds up to a bit of scuffing from a pillion, rain, washing etc. I'll also have an idea of how far a can goes. If I'm happy I'll do the rest.

I went for gun metal grey btw. :)

Sounds like a plan. Keep us posted.

I have the cracked rear fairings off my old bike in the garage. May have to give this a go for a bit of fun.

Simon!
Pics, Pix, PICKS, Photos... You get the drill, I wanna see how this shizzle works out for you.
It would certainly make buying a winter hack presentable an easy option again.

Had a go at the spray today. 1 can isn't quite enough for this sized fairing. It needs at least 1 more coat. Seems easy to apply and doesn't run too easily. Result is pretty good and not too patchy. Will have to road/weather test it for a bit then will report back if it suffers.

Looking good so far. Now we know how far a can will go.

Yeah. I would budget two cans each for my side fairings, 1.5 for a big rear plastic, probably 1.5 for the front fairing. So for an average sports bike (without bikini fairings), you're looking at 7 cans for good coverage and a decent thickness.

Just a little update ... initial impressions are this stuff is pretty rubbish. Had about 5 coats on and left it to dry for a week. Came back and it has a few tiny blemishes from tiny flies that decided to land on it. Decided to scrape them off with my nail (gentle) and the area all around it marked very easily. Basically there's no way in hell it'd stand up to a stone chip. It'd probably scuff if you just brushed against it with course textiles.

Anyway got my second can in the post which I intended to touch up the under areas where I couldn't get a good spray on. In the end I used the whole can to build up to 8 or 9 coats in total all over. Once it's dry next week I'll see how it handles really basic abrasion (rubbing your hand on it, nails lightly, rub it against my textiles gently, drop a few light bits of gravel on it!). If it still marks easily then I'll call it quits and find out how easy it is to peel off.

First impressions are their claim it withstands marking are bull****, but perhaps double the coats will have made it twice as strong.
