View Full Version : OMO thinking of changing bikes, SV to Street Triple
I love the SV but feel it could be time for a change.
Just after opinions from people who've had both on their experiences with the Trumpet?
The 3 has the flattest torque curve you can get in a mid size motor.
My daytona(13my) can pull 3rd in a 30 (it will do 35 in 4 th too)and still responds when you open the throttle.
The street will be pretty much the same
Compared to the SV the power will rev far more smoothly and higher
.Still has quite good engine braking too. Round finchingfield I stick to 2nd gear most of the time ,they are that flexible

Good bikes, in 2008 i bought a brand new standard model Street Triple ( only £5500 at the time new!).
Great engine and sound also quite a bit faster than the SV650 , good handling and good fun.. I was not overly impressed with the suspension on the standard bike so would advise the R model.
Think I'll be waiting 18 months or so and see how the MT-09 goes. The street triple is good on paper, but I just can't get over those ugly headlights!

I just killed my street triple r and I have to say it was a fantastic bike it did everything I asked and more and I would buy another one but with abs.
The brakes on the r are really really good and will stop you faster than anything else I have ridden due to the low weight of the bike but if you have to use them in an emergency they are lethal. I'm a two finger braker normally but one street thinking about braking could cause it to endo.
I have a Street R and love it. As has been said, quite a bit faster than the SV and being a naked it feels a lot different to my sv s. I much prefer the upright position. I would say see if you can get a decent test ride as it may not be for you, but it could also be the most expensive test ride you will take for a whole :)

Performance wise you can see how much faster the street triple is than my SV650 from my bit of fun with a pair of street triple's at Snetterton!! fast forward to 2.20ish

It's definitely a better bike than the SV, and incredibly fun to ride. The suspension is pretty harsh on the standard bike, so it might be better to go for the R, if you can justify the extra cost. All new models now come with ABS. I got one of the last non-ABS models at a huge discount. Build quality seems to be pretty good, but my bike has a couple of minor intermittent problems. Occasionally it either won't easily go into 1st from neutral and, very rarely, it's cut out whilst stopped and in neutral. I'm going to ask the dealer to look into these under warranty. Apart from this, it's a great bike. Only arrange a test ride if you're serious about buying, because it'll leave you lusting after one.

I had the R model, very good bikes 1 million times better than the crappy SV, mine never ever cut out on me.
Go have a test and sound out what you think.
Some intresting stuff on 675cc
Many thanks chaps for taking the time to reply, you've pretty much affirmed my thoughts of the bike, it's really good to get others opinions.
I'll be off to a Trumpet dealership soon....
What's the worst that could happen? ;)

Another world...going new or used?
bought mine back in 09 and it puts a smile on my face every time.
try st and str back to back, it's what I did and for my size, the r was bang on, although racetech were saying springs wrren't right. I'd of had to sort the susp on the st but the r was perfect.
if you need any more specifics pm and you can give me a shout, street-triple.co.uk is ok, but I find full of ***** who jump on the bandwagons about tyres etc, but good to spot pot probs.
It's a triumph though so they drink oil...mines used about 0.5L in 12.5k, all on a couple of track days, bugger all between services.

HA try owning a KTM mine used 1L every 2k miles
i haven't ridden a street but sitting on the bike it felt very small compared to my K3 sv that i had at the time and the bars were very narrow

My Street triple did not use hardly any oil.
But my 09 Daytona 675 used about 300ml every 1000 miles, also had issues with the rectifier, exhaust valve and the engine light came on every other week.. I sold it once the warranty expired!! good bike when it was working!
I topped mine up with 1/4 lts in 4000 miles
An old thread but maybe worth resurrecting - I'm casting around for a new bike and the street triple is a candidate - I'll be using it year-round in all weathers, so do any of you have any experience of how they hold up under that sort of treatment?
One of the other candidates is the MT-07, but it looks like a nightmare to clean!

My R gets used all year but not high mileages in winter, it's cleaned religiously and its standing up well. Just passed its first MOT last friday and has 20,000 on the clock. Some of the fasteners have lost their bling but for its age and mileage I'm quite happy with it.
Only downside to owning a street is turning circle (I've developed the bad habit of spinning the bike round on its sidestand) and lack of storage. Other than that I do everything on it including touring Europe.
I know people who do,but make sure you clean it and keep it covered in acf. May be worth getting an acf treatment done when you get the bike.

As above. You should make sure that it's well treated with ACF-50 during the winter. Triumphs are pretty good at standing up to British weather.
They improved the turning circle on the 2013 models, so that's not really a problem any more. As other people have said, the suspension on the standard model isn't great, so go for the 'R' if you can afford it.
