I'd prefer something like this.

It all depends on what the recipient likes.

I've used That website a few times and they're good to deal with.

Not tried that one :)

I recommended the Macallan as I've drank it lots, everyone who has tried it is surprised at how smooth it is.. The sherry cask element is the key I think.
My other favourite is Talasker, but I think that's a little harsh for some...

talisker is good, very good, but perhaps a bit of an aquired taste as scoff suggests.

lagavulin 16yo is heaven but again not for everyone. erdradour is another favourite of mine (smallest distillery in scotland)

as per bluepete depends on what the recipient likes..do you know any of their favourites? that could give you some guidance on what style they like.

+1 on the Lagavulin if you like smoky, peaty (i.e. Islay) malt. Beuatifully smooth and delicious. I'm also dying to try the Distillers Edition but can't find it for less than £65.

This is like buying your missus undies. Your taste and the recipients are never going to be in sync. You need to know the type of malts they like.

I like my Islay malts. Others find them a bit too peaty. I find the lowland ones lacking. but as an all rounder, I would suggest 18yr old Highland Park. If my old fella could be turned from his Bells by that, anyone can enjoy it.

Even in one brand the variation in age makes a difference. Some times I prefer a 14-16 year old to the more expensive 18-25 year olds. The whole thing about whisky is individual preference. Even the more expensive blended whisky can be really nice.

Yeah....thinking that turning up now with Aldi Whisky is not the thing.

Another good place to have a look is http://www.sohowhisky.com/ just round the corner from the usual Friday night Frith St meet (and way too tempting too!)
