It's actually native to these islands and was and taken over to America by settlers, particularly Scots and Irish. Trick or Treat is an americanised version of the Scottish tradition of guising.

Not sure where the actual offence lies, but surely the scroats demanding stuff with threats to put your windows in is covered by extortion, blackmail etc.


My favorite when they knock on my door screaming trick or treat, "I'll have treat please" and help myself from their bucket. Gets me in the mood for christmas. Bah humbug.
