Try the cold/hot cycle, bag of frozen peas/similar wrapped in a tea towel on the most painful area. Hot water bottle or similar then-:
3 minutes cold-5 minutes hot-3 minutes cold-5 minutes hot-3 minutes cold
then rest for 20 minutes, was recommended this by a chiropadist when my back went in early September. You can do it as often as you like, it gets blood flowing in and out of the injury.
A chiropodist gave you advice about back pain. Really? Hmmm.

if you ever get to find a cure for back pain (apart from taking the knife out) let the world know. You will make a fortune.

Where does it hurt? And what type of pain? Sharp or dull ache?

It's in my lower back (L3/4?) it's a persistent dull ache with occasional stabs.

Stop making that dooshbag face. Stand normally and relax. Your face will reflect this change in posture. Facial expression has been scientifically related to a more relaxed spinal posture. Look happy, and your spine will be happy.
Look like a pleb = a pleb's spine

Book into to see your GP and try for a referral to a physiotherapist. They will give you a decent assessment and give you treatment/self help exercises or advice. Better than anything anyone can do over the net

Ps I have a back injury from a car crash in 2002 and manage it quite well with minimal pain killer use
