View Full Version : GSXR front end on SV1000?
Hey chaps.
I'll soon be selling my Street Triple and going for an Sv1000s. I've seen a couple of nice examples and want to immediately sort the suspension upon purchase. I'm not intending to do any track days so would rather go down the plush route than have the bike set up rock hard (I realise the 1000 has fully adjustable suspension but no harm in upgrading) If I were to bolt on a Gixxer front end, what's the best plug and play option for the 1000S?
If I don't go for the Gixxer front end, linear springs, fork oil change and a brake rebuild should suffice for day to day use, no?
Also, rear shocks, any recommendations?

I just had my stock settings twiddled with by someone in the know and left all the bits as they were. Last year I started to get all sorts of handling problems where it wouldn't turn in. Took off the steering damper which was lumpy as hell and it's all been perfect ever since. Got myself a replacement damper (GSX-R fits) but that's still sitting in bubble wrap on a shelf.
Tyre pressure also makes a huge difference.
Suggest you ride it, work out what (if anything) you don't lke then look into replacing that bit. Mark Hammond is the suspension guru I'd recommend if you want to ne twiddles with, serviced or upgraded.

the thou basicly has gsxr front suspension its just not usd front forks , just get it all set up and serviced
as said the steering damper is a bit **** , i also just file 13'd it without issue
as for gsxr conversion have a word with RATTY on here he did it to his SZ
the rear spring is the only thing worth swaping out after 10.000 mile-ish , and that just to get one that last longer
i went from my thou SZ to the tiger, next year when ive the cash im going back
have you owned a sv thou before? are you aware of "the clunk" ? are you going gucci and for the SZ ?
I had an sv650 aye, and yeah the clunk was under braking wasn't it? Can't remember.
I use Steve Jordan for tuning suspension etc, I took my Street Triple R there and he did a great job, maybe a little bit too hard up front but that's the nature of a Street, not quite the perfect bike everyone cracks 'em out to be.
Anyway, good news on the front end basically being a Gixxer, I knew it was better than the 650's. I believe a good rear shock makes a bike so much better in every way so will invest in something like a Maxton etc.
I reckon I'll just go for a full fork overhaul and put in some nice linear springs for my weight and see how it goes.
Anything else anyone recommends doing to the bike to improve it overall? I saw a this youtube clip, the chap's got a damper looking effort on the n/s engine casing, says it smooths out the engine a bit, anyone know the source? (skip to around 4 minutes to see it)

Also, are there any other suspect things I should look out for on a thou upon inspection?
Balance your throttle bodies, bin the steering damper, get some PR3 tyres on it, balance your TBs again, reset the suspension settings back to default then rebalance your TBs and go for a long ride or three.
If it run's wide on bends then twiddle with your front-end twiddly bits. If you find you're punted out of the seat then twiddle your back end twiddly bits. Else just fill it up again, ride it loads and regularly check your TBs are in sync.
If it's a K3 then listen out for a nasty sounding big end rattle at about 3k. They all do it, apparently never go bang but should get you a discount.
I'll be going for a 2005-2007 model if I have my way. The TB's go outta sync a lot on the thou's? I assume it's a vacuum reader job to balance them?
Not so much that they go out of sync often, more that you need to get them spot-on else it'll be a bit lumpy and lurchy at low revs. Not sure if it's the right way to do it but I sync mine at 2.5 - 3k which is when the imbalance is most noticeable.
I can also confirm that if the rear throttle body falls off while riding it gets very very lumpy.

the TB problem was sorted after the k3, seriously look at the SZ model, they put more effort into the build as it was a special edition (and go for the same money as the normal ones)
GPR damper if your putting cash into it / power comander and get it set up for your chosen zausts / decent rear shock / double bubble screen is a must / decent rubber personally im an avon storm man for all weather riding / and the clutch adjustment is done by a guy on the SV Portal forum
any more Q's feel free to give me a shout

I've read the improved specs on the SZ, I can't help but detest the paint scheme though haha. Fickle I know! And no doubt it'd be daft to buy one just to change the paint scheme.
So what I was thinking from the get go:
PR4's
Exhausts if still standard on purchase
Do I need a power commander? I'm sure I read that the ECU was open enough to tuning.
Double Bubble
Some GBMoto rear sets
Uprated rear shock
Linear springs and new fork oil up front
Brake rebuild
Heated grips
Maybe a paint job if I go for one of those there SZ's :D

So what I was thinking from the get go:
PR4's now use your money right if theres life left in the ones you have use them up
Exhausts if still standard on purchase most certainly
Do I need a power commander? I'm sure I read that the ECU was open enough to tuning. PC or yoshi box are the tunning methods most used
Double Bubble essential
Some GBMoto rear sets good call
Uprated rear shock again good call
Linear springs and new fork oil up front like i said the forks are good but oil and setup are advised
Brake rebuild its genrally a good idea to make sure it stops lol
Heated grips look at dl1000 hand guards too for proper comfort
Maybe a paint job if I go for one of those there SZ's :D
if you do go sz get second hand tank and plastics even with a paint job you'll probably get your money back and a bit selling them on as there rare as rocking horse ****

I hear there is a cheap SZ going around Preston, that right Dave?
Had my K4 Thou' since Jan 2010 now and never had any issues with her, well, except some old geezer in the rain. Meant my original forks were bent to buggery and gave me a chance to improve (IMO) the Thou'.
I always found the brakes a bit lacklustre on the Thou' (maybe I was riding too fast,) but, having fitted GSXR 750 K6/7 forks with GSXR 600 K6/7 brakes (They were the models the items came from, but, I am pretty sure they are the same on both models for both years.)
Since then she stops on a dime and is a lot more manageable in corners IMO.
There is a progression theme in the album I have on here for her; http://forums.sv650.org/album.php?albumid=549
One thing I'd say is never have Bridgestones on her, they were the crappest tyres I've ever had. 2CT Roads are tops for the Thou'
Haha, I'm assuming Mr Preston is selling an SZ then? Give me a PM with details if that's the case as I'm back up t'north for a weekend and a few days, midway through December, so wouldn't mind having a nosey if the price is right

No, Dave's got stolen, hence it being cheap

BARSTEWARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that is all
I never got round to fitting the gixxer 750K5 front end on mine. It's still sitting in the garage ready to go. I've always got on very well with the stock suspension but had the rear shock rebuilt by KAIS last winter after 24 thousand miles and 24 track days. It's now done 29 trackdays and still feels good on track for such a heavy bike. I'm pretty sure all k5 + ( black framed ) bikes got all the engine and induction mods. Brakes are ace if you use braided lines and EBC HH pads with fresh fluid every year. Only problems I've had to sort is a blown rear collector gasket, took out the swing arm end float and poor ground clearence ( Gilles ). I currently got 10's weight oil in forks but this is a bit harsh for me on the road so I have them backed right off, but great for track.
I can link you to a few vids if you want to see how it handles on track on stock suspension. Been using Pilot Power 2CT's since 2007, but just changed to Power 3's which seem better all round.

How much you want for that K5 front end then? ;)
I keep promising myself I'll fit it, but the stock front works so well. I've got the lot. Forks, brakes, yokes with a full set of taper rollers, mudguard and TLS bars.
Here... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrvhaS7KzWo) Have a bit of SV action instead :D and some more (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWnDt31ekAs), Keep the stock suspension and spend the dosh on more horses mate.

Thanks for the videos! Is it spring yet?
That's a sweet looking track. What's it cost to do a track day there on the cheap?
Spend the dish on tires and track time, that's the biggest payoff.
Both Donington Park and Oulton Park are quite pricey. The Oulton vid was in October this year and was about £70 I think. Summer weekends at Oulton can cost £170 to £190 so we tend to do Oulton in March and November. Donington was in early April this year and about £85. Donington is a must if you are ever able to get across to do some.

Thanks Ratty. Our track day costs don't vary much because of the season, more by track and the org. that's putting on the event. They're mostly in the range of your off season prices. Tracks here are too few and far between, and lots of them are not so nice in terms of track surface and quality of available run-off. Having to add in travel costs here, it probably ends up on average, about the same.
Love to come over and run some of your tracks, but, I won't fly as long as we have the Gestapo in our airports, which will probably be forever.

If anyone is looking for a shock upgrade =>http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=206008
Do the 650/1000 shocks cross over?

Do you mean, can you put a thou shock on a 650?
Do the 650/1000 shocks cross over?
