View Full Version : ipod classic
just plugged in my wife's headphones to her new xmas prezzy in the form of an ipod classic 160 to make sure everything is ok for the day.
how can people say that they are good is beyond me. there is about half the volume of a creative zen vision m. you cant use the EQ as it distorts the music even at low volume which is bad.
absolute rubbish and i'm being kind when i say rubbish.
i was hoping for more being an apple product and everyone raves about them. all i can say to those that rave about the ipod is that you need your ears tested.
the creative zen vision m is an old product (about 8 years) so for the ipod to sound not even close says something about apple products.
ipod = low distorted flat sound
zen = high full glorious sound
so i'm now going to have to buy a dedicated headphone amp to get anything close to decent volume levels :smt021

Try plugging it into your computer and removing the max volume limiter in iTunes. My iPod shuffle had similar issues.

Go into the settings and there should be a sound or volume setting there. You can lift the limits there
thanks peeps, bit happier now but it still sound shizz compared to the zen but at lest its louder.
@ tactcom. you need the cradle/usb cable and windows 7. once connected win7 should see it as a removable disc in my computer. from there you just delete/add your mp3 files. you might need to install the drivers from creative but on my sons win7 (i use xp) machine it went straight on without them.
ooohhh been reading that you can put a bigger HDD in the zen so the 160 gig ipod HDD at about £45 works. looks like i'll be getting the zen :-)

I had an old 20gb ipod which was ace, then I lost it when I came flying out of the Haggis Trap at Glencoe whilst very out of control on a snowboard. White ipod in snow was NEVER going to be found.
Replaced it with a 120gb classic and I've got to agree with Bibio - the volume level is awful (admittedly I'm half deaf) - so by the time I get it cranked up high enough to be able to hear it, it's all fuzzy and distorted.
My iPad, in contrast has magnificent sound quality.

I don't understand how an iPod can distort. Surely it's the headphones that distort and so there's a simple solution to that problem. Get better headphones.
As for volume. They come with the sound limiter set to a low level. As the others say, lift it and it should be fine.
All any MP3 player does is output a load of data. It's the speaker bit that turns it into sound...

I've tried the standard apple ones, Sony ones, Seinheisser ones and finally a set of SoundMagic ones - all of which sound miles better on pretty much anything else I've plugged them into than they do in my iPod classic.
It's a shame, cos I use it all the time in the car with an FM radio thing plugged into the bottom of it, which sounds Ok - just the headphone jack is p!sh

most definitely not the headphones. the wife has a pair of beyerdynamic dt-770 pro 80 ohm which sound fantastic with the zen. the ipod is just carp.
ok so the 80ohm is a bit high (should be around 32ohm) for a portable MP3 player but all that does is lessen the output ever so slightly and as said the DT770's dont have a problem with the zen.
distortion is mostly due to an amplifier going into clipping as it does not have enough drive to run the load that is connected.

I had a classic 80gb a few years ago. Never had any problems, the earphones that come with them are crap though. Id try other headphones and see what happens.
What quality have you loaded the files onto the ipod? You can have compressed files, or a full quality file which uses alot more space. Its a setting on itunes somewhere.
Also, they wont go too loud because all portable devices now have a volume cap to help stop damaged hearing, this can only be lifted if its jailbroken i think.
