I thought to post a thread sharing my frustration .
In the past 4 month , this is the 4th tyre puncture on my sv650. I think council needs to clean up when they bloody finished their work road.
does this happen to you guys out there or am I just unlucky ?
would suing or writing a letter to them do anything ?
Now I am forced to change the tyre due to too many puncture repairs, my tyre is sport/race I think and have to check it but I think mainly the puncture is due to the soft compound .
here is a pic of my tyre
What type of tyre do you recommand going for that isn't sh*t on gripping but also nail proof or to an extend not as easy to get punctured.

I believe that tyre is an Avon Storm of some variety (I think it says ultra on it). That's a pretty standard touring tyre, perfectly good, but not any kind of race / sport fitment so I don't think the punctures are due to the soft carcass or compound.
I used to get rather a lot of punctures, Mick at Essential Rubber got quite used to seeing my bike with the tyre off. The main thing I've changed is how I ride and overtake. I'm much more wary of using bits of the road that are never used by cars, gutters, areas hashed out between opposing lanes, bits by traffic islands etc. If you've got a puncture driving through an area that was obviously not cleared by builders you can try claiming against them. If the council did the work you can claim directly, but you'd probably need to show it was more than just a single missed nail.
I'd say examine how many dusty / grotty bits of road you're putting the bike through, the front tyre tends to pick debris up that's then trapped under the rear tyre forcing it in.

many thanks for this.
You are correct it is storm and realised it is not sport after posting which is when I checked their website.
I honstley have changed my riding habit and no longer ride in hashed areas or very close to kerbs where the debris and nails could be .
Despite all this I got another puncture. I was riding in a lane that was just cleaned up after road work I think and looked clean but very unlucky, they can't even clean a simple road.
re tyre, what brand and type would you get if you were me bearing in mind I may also use it for some track days?
I am thinking of again Avon or michellen .
would it be radial or belted ?

where would you buy your tyre from, I am thinking ebay but maybe it is not genuine so why going to some high street shops
Where are we looking on your pic? TBH I can't see sod all, I know it is tough riding in winter but a bit of a clean would help.
Are these nails/cuts/other flats? When you say "council", what doing ?
I have storm 2 ultras, only had 2 punctures with them and was bad luck on one and fairly sure a little ****e did it in town.
They are generally good tyres mate, at the start of their life plenty of tread so should help avoid punctures and if you buy from a reputable dealer they should give you a warranty card so if you get a puncture it's a free replacement if enough tread left.
The pics look like they are pretty well worn so you might just be very unlucky.

where do you measure the tread depth from ?
I did it on the side and they have around 4-5mm available so the new one should be 8mm as per car shouldn't it ? I was under impression it has a plenty of tread left
by the way , why does always my rear gets punctured, I think due to its larger size otherwise if there is a nail to go over the front should get punctured sooner as it rides over it first
I looked at michellen road pilot 3 but very expensive so now looking at dunlop
Due to punctures I have decided not to stay with Avon.
I think the tyre design itself is unlikely to be a big factor in the punctures, but there's plenty of good tyres out there so no reason not to try something different.
I'm not sure how many mm of tread you'd have on a new tyre, you should be able to check with the manufacturer, it'll vary from one design to another.
All tyres you get will be radial, the size will be a 160/60 R17. Some have steel bands, some kevlar or similar, depends on the exact characteristics the manufacturer was after at the time of design. I've had plugs put in Michelins, Bridgestones, Dunlops, Pirellis and Metzlers from memory, almost always the rear, as I said I think the front tyre goes over shrapnel and picks it up for the rear to hit.
Buy a sports-touring tyre that suits your budget. They're all fine, some are more expensive than others, some last slightly longer, some grip slightly better in wet or dry conditions, but I've done track days on plenty of touring tyres that are now no longer even produced, so I really wouldn't worry.
You don't say where you are, I'd phone a local tyre fitter before buying online, everyone's got to make a living and some of them charge a fair bit for fitting tyres they've not supplied, you may find it's as cheap to buy direct from them.

thanks, I know a place that fits it for £8 in close to me in London.
they charge £8 for puncture which includes taking the tyre off repairing and put back in so the replacement is even easier.
buying online thus may save me some money but will check.
i am looking at moto tyre which is online and also ebay . dunlop roadsmart is the one so far decided on so hopefully should be good

£110 including fitting which is very cheap :)
my thread diviated from what it meant to be which was people sharing their frustration with tyre puncture to which tyre to buy :)
thanks as always for your support and advise

You should be able to see wear indicators on the tyre, usually marked with a little arrow on the top of the sidewall.
A tyre can have loads of tread on the side but be illegal, think the current law is..The legal tread depth for a Motorcycle Tyre is different to a car or Van tyre. The limit for a Motorcycle tyre is 1.0mm across three quarters of the tread and a ‘visible’ tread pattern of the remaining quarter.
FYI if its nails you are picking up, not sure how you would get compensation from the council as why would workmen be using nails when carrying out work on a highway? Nails in these circumstances will come from contractors and builders vans/pickups that are driving on the road i should imagine, when they drop out of the pickup rear or out of doors etc.
