Right oh might org.
I haven't had a bike since February!! Longest year of my life.
Budget £2500
What to get??
Sv hurt my back, so thinking not so sports bikes.
Looking at Z750 and Er6 at moment.
Any suggestions?
First question: What do you want the bike for? Touring, weekend blast, knee down, 2 up . . . .
Yes, most bikes will do all that with a compromise in each area. May as well get one that is tailored to your 'spec' before it before buying.

on the budget the z750 you'd be looking at is pants IMO, I had ago on one and found the suspension just as crappy as the SV's and underpowered.
That was just my opinion though.

What the gsx650f's like?
Don't know what type of bike I want.
It'll be mainly for ride outs, fun. Maybe odd trip to Cornwall and occasional commute on sunny days to college.
As I've got my car for cold wet weather.

Classic lines and great mpg ;)
How about the Triumph TT600? 108 bhp, 155 mph, great brakes and handling!

Too old and ugly...
Like newer bikes.
The fz6 look good.
Too many choices

Dunno if your budget could get you a triumph street triple, great little bike and pretty quick too.
Versys are good budget bikes too, nice riding position so be better for your back.

What the gsx650f's like?
You called?
In plain language it's a Bandit with a full fairing. Slightly different tuning, but you'd not really notice, and not as popular as the Bandit so could be a bargaining tool.
Competent all-rounder is the best way to describe it. Comfy for a day out, enough oomph to get you in trouble, predictable handling built down to a budget (more adjustment than an SV but it's no sports bike), heavy and long so it's stable. On the down side it is heavy and like most middleweight fours it needs a bit more torque for lots of two-up. For one it's fine and you don't need to rev the bits off it to make progress.
Fairly upright riding position and low pegs so if it fits you it will be easy to ride. As an all-rounder it's good at most things but not brilliant. It's not everyone's cup of tea but it's worth trying if you can find a demo ride.

suspension just as crappy as the SV's
Yes I've heard that said before. If you are talking sports bike, then probably true. But the SV is not a sports bike as such. I find the stock suspension great for road work. It sails over the bumps as well as many a more expensive bike. If we are talking sharp handling, well that's a different matter but just in case it puts anyone off, the SV's suspension is more than adequate for a road bike. I think some of the wannabe sports bike riders maybe ask too much from the plucky V twin with great attitude. In many ways I prefer it to my Gixxer I had last year; nowhere near as race focussed obviously but, bang for the buck - spot on IMO. Mind you, I will say, the GSX-R600 went like f***.
The OP mentions sore back. Obviously if that is a personal weakness area, clip on bars are not ideal. However, I become an O.A.P in less than a year and still find the SV very comfortable. I ride with relaxed arms and rest on the tank often. As for an alternative - you might miss the torque of a twin if you go for an in line 4. The V-strom is the same engine as the SV but much more upright. The Versys is also great. Beware low seats - they can hurt your back just as much as leaning forward, unless you are vertically challenged of course!. GSX650F is nice but seat is lowish - it's also heavy. The only real way of course is proper test rides - never buy without!

Them Z750's are great fun. Yes the suspension isn't great but it's a hoot. You can feel every bump when cornering but IMO it's made me a better smoother rider for when I progressed to my cb. They are a great hooligan tool. Easy to wheelie stoppie and the newer model had a massive rear disc which was great for skids (I know very childish). I would have another zed as really enjoyed it and the look was brilliant. Okay the box section swing arm let the aesthetics down but the amount of smiling I did on it made up for that. Here's a pic of mine

I'd love a street triple, but can't find any in my price range
You will never find a street in that price for a while I don't think. Cheapest I have seen was 3100 and that was a cat c.

Never rode that model but the press rated higher than the model I bought. That one was a bit more ballsy but rougher around the edges. My was a bit soften down making no extra power. Just have a better look and more weight and less power if I remember rightly. The only reason I bought a new one was due to 0% and a £99 deposit. The second hand one was only £1k cheaper and finance would of only made it £600 cheaper. Take it for a blast and see how you get on together

It's worth travelling if you're going to also be saving more on the bike. I saved £700 by doing a 200 mile round trip.

DJ, it is cheap and looks decent. Just waiting for a reply from the seller to find out if it has any history, hpi clear ect ect.. Would be worth the journey if all checks out. And it would leave me enough change to insure it in one payment of £370

Even a kawasaki forum, although as demonstrated in the above advert, literacy among kawasaki owners clearly hasn't made much of an improvement since the 15th century so don't get your hopes up
What about another sv and do a bar conversion for a more upright ride?

car no claims now effect bike insurance prices?

Not to my knowledge. Possibly on a 6 wheel policy

why wait until feb then? unless you still have a bike policy still running? i don't understand how your bike will be cheaper in feb if you get another car NCB
joshwalker094
30-12-13, 03:12 PM
That's why I'm extremely confused. Using go compare, policy starting late jan on z750 fc, 2yr ncb bike
1yr car, £401
Start today fc 2yr ncb bike £800
I'm very confused.
Carole Nash starting today 2007 naked sv, £858 tpft mods. Yet on my 06 sv earlier this year, tpft mods ect 2yr ncb, £600.10
yorkie_chris
30-12-13, 03:29 PM
Insurance companies can change prices based on what you ate for brekky if they like.
I reckon the bike ncb is what counts. From my experience that car/trade NCB is what makes the biggest different to their own policies.

I think you're all been a bit harsh with this chap, there are plenty of people in the UK now who don't have English as a first language and not knowing what an HPI check is doesn't make him untrustworthy. In fact you could argue the opposite, if he was in the business of doing up dodgy bikes and flogging them on he'd know about such things.
He could just as easily be someone trying to make an honest buck by buying a bike slightly cheaper than normal due to it having light damage, fixed it up and given in a basic service himself before trying to sell it on. He's not tried to hide any of that. Plenty of people out there do that, in fact I'd struggle to remember the last time I bought a bike that wasn't damaged.....my only problem is I never get round to selling them!

ah that'll be the magical mysterious regulations of the insurance companies then
joshwalker094
30-12-13, 07:54 PM
Well, sort of figured out the insurance ********. If I insure as of today it's £80/100
Dearer than insuring at the end of the month.
