View Full Version : Dash Cams

It seems the driving standards in this country are steadily getting worse and I find myself looking more and more into dash cams to cover myself should the unfortunate happen. I have already fallen foul to someones lies this year and have had to take the insurance burden of their careless swapping lanes into the side of my van (thankfully they hit my corrugated bummer and the damage to me was sorted with the wipe of a wet thumb). Although a cam wouldn't capture the mentioned impact it would have captured the moments leading up to it and thus covered me.

I don't really know anything about them but i have a few requirements.

Not massively expensive
Easy to remove/quick to take on and off
if not easy to remove then something that's concealed/secure (van can on occasion be left in questionable area's)

Anyone have any recommendations?

Check out "techmoan" on youtube, he's UK based and has tested (In depth) many action cams and dash cams from the ebay / chinese market. Some are naff some are very good value.

Dash cams are almost fitted as standard in Russia, as it helps with insurance claims, i've even heard fitting one helps reduce you premiums in some cases but that could be baloney. So pretty much every accident is captured by someone's dash cam.

Don't you think it's sad and worrying though that a country is investing so much on blame devices rather than addressing the poor driving in the first place with better education etc?

I hope it doesn't get widespread here, I don't want a camera watching everything I do.

It's unfortunate but bourn out by the op that people can't be trusted to play by the rules.
The knob who smashed in to Sarah would have bore the full blame of her accident if we had a dash cam.
They even tried it on with two people who wanted to claim injury when only one was in the car!!!

They were Asian?
My friend had Asians in a car slam their brakes on while going round a clear island, he hit them up the back in his transit (obviously could see there was nothing for them to stop for), they all claimed for whiplash.

Brum is the whiplash capital...

My biggest fear is those "quality of driving" apps that are becoming popular. I don't think it takes that big a leap of the imagination to envisage a situation where someone does something to maintain their "good driver" status that actually puts them or someone else at greater risk. (sorry for the highjack WB).

I think the Drift helmet cams have the ability to "Tag" where it then saves the last two minutes of footage. Tomor will know.

As a side note, if someone was claiming for whiplash for a carload of people and subsequently dash cam footage showed there to only be one person in the car, would they be done for fraud?

That is part of the problem. There is no downside to trying to play the system.

Yes they will be done for fraud. My Dad is currently going through an insurance process where the other party is committing fraud (claiming more damage on the vehicle & injuries for people not present) The insurance company are allowing them to chase the claim-therefore giving them enough rope to hang themselves and then have enough evidence to prosecute for fraud.

The down side to playing the system is higher premiums for everyone.

Good luck to your dad. I hope they get them and get that into the papers too.

Yeah it sucks that we have to pay more to cover it, but most of the people making spurious claims won't think of it like that. There is no immediate downside to the person trying to play the system. If it works they get a payout. If it doesn't, then they are not in a worse position then if they had tried.

I now use a Drift 170 cam on the helmet when commuting. Having previously had an accident where the other party admitted liability at the scene then changed their mind afterwards it just makes it easier.

With the cost of insurance now, people are very keen to help stop their premiums going up due to a claim. I don't use one in the car though.

The insurer sent an investigator . Fortunately pic of the incident was on the mobile phone and she got a witness that the persons turned up in a separate car. Court etc involved.

Nice to see.
I run a dashcam in the car, but have yet to fit one to the bikes. This is on my new years "to do" list for obvious reasons.

Perhaps it is worth trying to get some of these stories into the papers. Anything which might make someone think twice in making a spurious claim. Particularly highlighting cases where there were not dash cams.

I use Roadhawk RH-1 (discontinued) or DC-1 cameras front and rear on the bikes and van. They meet my requirements for evidence cameras. Don't know what your pain threshold is on your wallet, but for me these have paid for themselves.

Its the insurance company that noted the flaw in the story. Due to it being a company insurance policy they are very much on the ball with this sort of thing.

I'm guessing there's a way of wiring the power in permanent, I think i have an secondary cigi socket tucked under the glove box in my van but i can't remember. Either way it would annoy me being plugged into the main cigi socket.

Tomor
31-12-13, 03:59 PM
Yeh, I will be wiring it to the back of the cig socket, and putting a fuse inline. That way it comes on with the ignition, and doesn't need to be plugged into a cig socket.

I was going to but I deleted them all when I was fiddling with it last night. I need to turn the shock sensor down as the potholes have been making the camera put delete protection on all the clips.

i suppose if someone drove right at you shouting their plate number (true story) then it will work.

I'll most likely get my money back, I found this site that list's everything the fake one's do and what they look like (all of which mine does). Plus it has the guys eBay user name listed as being a seller of fakes, so can't really see how he can get around that one TBF.

I think if you managed to get the numberplate yourself and then started proceedings and used it as supporting evidence it'd be...kinda helpful.

Does anyone know much about getting money back on ebay?

After opening a case and many many messages I've been offered the following, £5, then £8, then nothing with the idea of selling it to someone else, now he/she wants me to send it back but foot the bill and its also "unfair on them as they'll be on a loss". Ebay states all fakes are to be destroyed so I won't be sending it back unless they tell me too, do I just leave it until Tuesday/Wednesday when i can escalate it? I don't think they appreciate how ridiculous their argument is when their username is on the g1w discussion boards as being a member that sells fakes.

Tomor
22-03-14, 05:28 PM
Escalate the case. The product is not as described so you won't have to pay anything. This is where paypal are good for buyers, as they will take the money from the seller, and give it to the buyer. Has happened at work as a guy complained about a set of gloves, we said send them back recorded and we will reimburse him. He sent them back normally and RM lost them. Paypal gave him his money back.

Wideboy
22-03-14, 06:22 PM
This is through eBay, are they the same? Kind of?

Tomor
22-03-14, 06:40 PM
Yep, escalate it to customer support stating doesn't match description and you would like a refund, and for seller to pay return postage as you wouldn't have bought it if you knew the correct details of the camera.

Wideboy
25-03-14, 11:10 PM
Wow ebay ftw!

Escalated the case at about half nine and got a refund at ten to ten. Happy days, now to buy a real one.
