View Full Version : Euro Truck Simulator 2 Anyone else play?

Morning,
A few days ago I picked up Euro Truck Simulator 2 in the sale on steam as it looked like fun. I'd previously mocked my step son for playing it but after watching for a few minutes I wanted a go myself, £4 for the game and the new DLC seemed fair enough....

O
M
G!

I'm hooked, I've run numerous quick trips and I've just bought my first truck. I've got my xbox controller connected to the PC and set up pretty well for the game (still on super simple automatic gearbox) but I REALLY enjoy mile munching along with internet country radio stations playing (an in game feature!)

I can't quite explain why I find it so enjoyable. You can get speeding, crash and redlight fines, you have to repair the truck if you damage it etc. I've gotten pretty damn adept at reversing the trailers into the bays now too! (I'd be screwed in reality though as I use a hovering camera over the truck for that)

Please tell me I'm not the only closet trucker ;)

Steam says 17 hours logged. Thankfully it isn't realtime, I've done some 24 hour hauls now :) but even those are only 60-90 minutes I think.

Must work out the time ratio sometime.

quick google.... the time compression ratio is different depending on whether you are driving outside or inside the cities.

dont know how you would work out the difference?

Downloaded the free demo for the pc and managed to get the ps3 controller hooked up. Works a treat but I've ordered a ps2 to pc cable from eBay for two quid in order to get an old steering wheel and pedals connected :D

Heh managed to put quite a bit of time in on it this weekend. Bought it Xmas day and have 24 hours logged playing it (real time) I just find it so relaxing and enjoyable :-)
I'm wanting to haul a car transporter next, I'm allocating my level up points to try and find where I get them.

daveyrach

I'm halfway through level 4, I have been using my points to upgrade the dangerous goods bit at the top. There seems to be big money in hauling dangerous goods such as explosives etc.

Got to level 5 which is the end of the free demo. My ps2 to USB adaptor arrived today (£1.95) and whilst it works for steering etc, the pedals don't work, even though they show as working in Control Panel (Windows and Motionjoy DS3 and Better DS3).

Even d/l'd the Logitech drivers (but they don't see the device - then again, it is a ps2 not a PC controller.

If I could get the pedals working, I'd buy the full game.

Will give it a go. As I said, Windows sees the pedals working so can't understand why Euro Trucker can't.

You are remembering to map the pedals as an axis to tell it to do something with aren't you nobby?
It took me ages to settle on what to do with what bits of the 360 controller and even then realised I'd missed the up down axis off my view!

Yeah - when I go through the input wizard, it doesn't recognise any input from the pedals, even though the Advanced tab in the control panel dialog box registers/shows pedal presses.

:(

It could be a mix up with the drivers as when the ps3 controller is connected the game sees it as a Motionjoy controller when you select the input type, however with the pedals and wheel connected (as a ps2 device in Motionjoy) the game just sees USB joypad.

I'm away until Thursday night but will have a play swapping drivers as suggested to see if that helps. It may be that it'll work fine if I set it as a ps3 device?

Darn, sorry wasn't meant to be patronising either just trying to think it through and that bit did catch me out, I expected it to be familiar with the 360 controller and just work but it needed telling everything.

I pondered a wheel and pedals but I like the casual slouching I can do playing with the controller, cruise control engaged, one hand on the stick the other drinking/eating, just like real truckers! :D

I hit level 15 last night, I hauled my first car transporter (a personal goal of mine recently) and I've got a garage in Rotterdam with a minion working for me. I took out a loan to buy the truck for them but I've paid that off now so I'm turning pure profit again :)

Nobbylad
08-01-14, 10:54 PM
The issue I have with the controller, is that you need to keep one of the joysticks pushed up to maintain speed and pedals would be easier.

DanSp
08-01-14, 11:09 PM
That's what cruise control is for??

Just cruising down to Dover. I'musing using a USB wired Xbox 360 controller and work well. Thought I'd give it a good

Brettus
09-01-14, 07:16 AM
Definitely get cruise control on the job, I couldn't drive very far at all without it. Having the bigger truck means you are up to speed quicker to engage cruise and then just sit back and steer :) I also have the forward/reverse on the triggers so I pull the right trigger to go and left to brake and then reverse. means steering is just purely left/right on the stick rather than up and left.

Just upgraded to 750hp engine as I hit level 16 last night :) Not enough for a brand new truck but not sure I need one now they are open to me, I've made my current one as big and powerful as it can be I think. Need to understand the stats of each truck more I guess.

Nobbylad
09-01-14, 07:44 AM
Yeah, cruise control is OK but I had the left stick set up for left/right/fwd/brake so steering could sometimes disengage cruise control.

Easily fixed I guess.

And In the real world full throttle driving burns fuel like nothing else.....

Fill up at end of average day (450-500km) £450 that's on cruise and mainly motorways.

If the game is being realistic(ish) have fuel costs not been programmed?

Ch00
09-01-14, 09:02 PM
You have to buy fuel and it comes out of your profits. Not sure how fast it really burns it.

Hmm, does it actually see them as buttons? ETS might be expecting to see them as axis controls like the triggers on the 360 control, the more it squeeze the more it does the action not just on/off. I might be wrong though.

Nobbylad
12-01-14, 12:17 AM
Think that's probably it. I think ETS expects an axis control, however it allows other buttons to be used as accelerate & brake so why not the pedals?

Very good point, it must work for keyboard users, perhaps I'm talking rubbish then sorry.

Just another update, I've attained level 17 after some less than satisfactory deliveries (I got too lax with it and started messing up, cost me £23k in repairs in one hit!) I also probably shouldn't have tried to break Ch00's record whilst hauling dynamite! :help::pale:
Anyway, back on track, advanced a level and gone class 4 dangerous materials.
Decided to treat myself to a new truck when I realised I'd been driving the FH CLASSIC not the new FH that has the fancy V shaped daytime running lights (YES I am that vain!) so I've drained my savings and traded in my FH Classic with 750 engine for a 2013 FH with 750 engine.

Check out the interior! Don't those leather pixels look PLUSH! ;)

Just a 360 controller here, it's wireless and I've got the wireless receiver, you could just use a wired one which is cheaper but I had the ones from the 360.

Gives me a trigger each for forward/reverse, bumper buttons for indicators, left stick for steering, right stick for viewpoint, dpad for lights, high beam and cruise control (1 function spare as yet) buttons for wipers, connect/disconnect trailer, cab view and music player. I have the back button set for next camera and start button set for F1 GPS control (effectively pause) works pretty well, don't have to use the keyboard for much.

Bought this last night and was playing it with my flat-mates Logitec G27 steering wheel (clutch, 6 + reverse position gear lever, force-feedback). Lots of fun. Had the gearing set to range / splitter which was interesting, though I think probably too difficult without the physical toggle switches, probably going to leave it in range split only as it seems silly to only use half the gear positions on the wheel.

Shame there is no option to make it a little more sensitive to the clutch, it will start moving happily if you just let go of it.

On the plus side Euro trucker has been on sale today on Steam for £2.19 I think it was, bargain. Not sure if the 8 hr offer expired at 85% off but still good.

Had a session on it tonight now I've reinstalled the alienware and did Liverpool to Frankfurt hauling hot chemicals and listening to country radio, I'd forgotten how theraputic it is :)

G it's AWESOME!!!
I've even stuck it to manual gears so I use the shifter and have a toggle for the range:

Clutch works a treat, cruise control on the steering wheel, reversing is so much fun (and easier!) with the wheel.
Only thing I struggle with is visibility checks at the moment, tricky to use mouse, wheel, pedals and shifter :D
Maybe I need an Oculus rift now LOL

You are a bad bad man Kenzie, I want the high power cargo addon now :P

Played an hour or so on Spintires last night, a good portion spent faffing about with the wheel (still not behaving as expected but I've settled for the accelerator being mid point for stop, floored for forward and released for reverse. I'll sort it properly later) but I spent an enjoyable rest of the hour plugging through mud, getting most of my vehicles irretrievably stuck/lost/rolled and think I'm going to really rather enjoy this. I need to start over as I really was messing about but considering it's like a slow motion racing game with a ton of frustration, it's surprisingly playable!

Think my laptop needs a new dose of thermal paste though as it was severely overheating, it's been getting worse recently.
Then started looking at GPU upgrades for it........ now I've started looking at building a new gaming rig, stupid geek extrapolation curse.
