Was on a X-Men marathon tonight, watched the first film. Turned off the ps3, popped to the shop to get some supplies, got back, put the second disc in, the PS3 came on but wouldn't boot, instead it beeps 3 times and a red light blinks, tried turning it on and off, even took the hard drive out and put it back in as some people suggested this on the net.
Anyone had a similar problem? Is it time to upgrade to the PS4?
BTW it's the launch model, 60gb I think.

That will be one of the graphics chips overheating. The fix is to open it up, heat the GPU's with a heat gun and reapply some liquid heatsink to the tops of them. Hour job tops.
The GPU's get so hot they unsolder themselves. If you have your PS3 on the side it happens a lot quicker. People have also upgraded the internal fans and also added external fans after completing the fix.

However, I did this twice, it lasted a month at a time. Bought a newer PS3 in the end.

Tesco were doing the 12GB console for £99, not sure if the deal is still on

Cheers, looks like it's knackered then, was surprised it lasted as long as it did to be honest as it sounds like a jet engine after its been on a couple of hours. I'm getting Gran Turismo withdrawals. Hope I can recover my saved game

Should be able to remove the hard drive and whack it into a new console shouldn't you?

I've not played it today so I can crack on with it this weekend. If its the console that's dead then the HDD should be ok and can plug it into the new console.

yeah, easy as pie to install a new HDD. Although you have to be careful as generally the PS3 will format any installed HDD 1st time its installed.

This happened to my launch model too (5 years), I managed to get mine working with just a heat gun but after reading Spiers' failing again at the time I just bought another (120gb I think).

Just done some research and it looks like the ps3 automatically formats a new drive so can't just swap it over, I will connect it to my laptop and get the data off, hope I'll be able to restore it to the new one

You can back it up to a USB flash drive:

Exactly what happened to mine, I couldn't even get the game disc out, but a heat gun on the circuit boards did get it to come on.

After you've got the HDD out, back it up to the flash drive. Once you've installed the HDD into the new PS3 restore it from the flash drive.

I could get the 12gb and stick my 60gb HDD in it, does your PS3 still work Phil?

Can't do anything with the data off the HDD, plugged it into my PC and Windows wont recognise it, ahh well, better start GT6 all over again :)

It's not a HDD, its a flash drive/SSD. TBF on mine its fine so far playing GT6 and watching BluRay movies. Easy enough to upgrade & I can get HDD's cheap so no issue for me.

I tried a hair dryer, didn't work so I used a heat gun.

Why, won't your straighteners give off enough heat ?

Hair dryer won't work. You need enough heat to ineffect melt the solder, hair dryer won't give off enough temperature.

At least I have hair to straighten!
Borrowed a hair dryer but it kept overheating and cutting out.
Borrowed a PS3 as well.

Know someone with a spare Xbox one so might just get that, not sure I want to cross to the dark side though

Hey, I cut mine, I could grow it if i wanted...

You will be banned from Frain if you go over to the dark side, there's a reason they make the controllers all nice colours, they appeal to kids, real gamers have a play station.
