I'm now out of contract so I'm in a good position to negotiate a new deal. I'm with Orange so will stick with them as I like my Orange Wednesdays and free pizza.
I've been happy with the Samsung S2 I've been using so unless anyone can convince me otherwise I'm thinking the S4 or the Note 3 would be the obvious replacements.
I've already spotted that neither has an FM radio which is really annoying but most places I'll be able to use Tune-In Radio via wifi. Slightly concerned that with my tiny hands and pea sized head the Note could make me look a bit Dom Jolly!

Any opinions on either of these?
And 4G - what's that all about then? I don't really watch videos on my phone, or play games. I mostly use it for texting and emailing with a bit of Facebook and the Org but that could change in future.
How about going SIM free and buying a Google Nexus 5 for £299 outright (http://www.google.co.uk/nexus/5/)? Removes the noose of a contract and over the two years you would be tied into a contract some good savings to be had. You can get a cheap SIM instead allowing you the freedom to change phones whenever you like. Two people here at work have done it and are very happy.

Wait till April/May and get the Galaxy S5, that's what I'm doing.

Considered the Motorola G? Superb phone for the money. Buy it unlocked, and switch networks as and when you please.
Contract? for me it would be the note (but i have wide fingers, and i own a note 2, which has been awesome so far)

I think the only reason to wait is to see if the S4 becomes cheaper. It doesn't sound as if you're (LPH) a power-user, more a fiddler.
S5 may have a better camera tho which you may like? Don't know what the camera on the S4 is like. The S3 is fine (I only ever use it to take photos of my knob when I'm drunk - does that ok tho my arm isn't long enough to allow me to get the whole thing in).
If you're not someone who wants a new phone every year or so, I'd do what others suggest (and I've done) which is buy a phone and then just use a cheap SIM.

Just giving the moto g a test run. Seems excellent for its price. Really quite liking it at the moment. This is my work phone. I also use an iphone 5 which is great but pricey.

Just bought a moto G myself. I'm very pleased with it. Nice to have an unlocked phone too so I can use my works sim in it. Nice vanilla android which has just updated to kitkat. Camera is a bit weak but that's all I can't criticise. Damn good price.

I nearly bought one of those Moto G, but it had no micro SD card slot.
So I upgraded to an HTC desire 500 on Orange from the CPW
Has an FM radio, plus that Tuneln radio you were on about. Upgradable to 64GB micro SD card
Has Google maps navigation installed, plus you tube.
Its not in the same league as the S4, but much better than my old HTC desire in some respects, its bigger for a start, which helps my dodgy mince pies out

Sony Z1, SD slot, 21MP camera, waterproof, good battery life, super fast...
Got mine in December, no issues and very happy
I wasn't worried about the lack of an SD card slot. I had a 32gb card in my old HTC desire and barely used a quarter of it. So I went for the 16gb moto G

I use about 1gb a month at present, plus Wi-Fi at home. Current contract is £32 a month which work pay.

I assume work be paying for the new phone too then? Maximum budget of £32 / month again or can you get it up a bit? About £35 / month will get you any of the top end phones, more or less

HTC 1 then
If your work pay try a HTC 1.
Shell' at work has one but it's camera is weak.
LG G2 looks nice bit quercky on the buttons front. Ace camera
Mark (EAR) liked the Experia Z.
So I gave the Z1 a try. And now had it nearly 2 months.
I'm Happy with it ;)
4G is faster than works Wifi. Used 1.6 Gig on EE. It's capped at 2 Gig.
A charge case is very useful as streaming blink box onto a. Bluetooth speaker can use lots of battery.
Sarah,s. 16 Gig. Moto G is knock out value for a mid range droid. Camera is better than the HTC 1

I use the camera a bit but almost always have my Canon G15 on me so switch to that for the best pics.
Because I've been with Orange so long and haggle hard I can normally get a good phone and deal.
I refuse to have a work BlackBerry so instead they pay up to £30 at the moment though that might change and be withdrawn.
A swappable battery is probably a must as I normally need to recharge by 2pm

Samsung Galaxy is the only top end smart phone with replaceable battery. By tht I mean snap on/off back. All the others like HTC 1 & Apple u have to dismantle the phone.

Galaxy S3 is excellent for the money does all you want with swappable battery.
as it 'obsolete' should be plenty cheap.
4G is the new coke so make sure if u want it your phone is compatible.
Moto G is excellent for the money. How they make it that cheap is beyond me.
Maybe google doing loss leading or summat

That's quite heavy use.
The charge case might be an easier option for you.

You can get ones with a wallet look on some too
