View Full Version : Non-BT MotoGP coverage
Dorna have opened up subscriptions for the 2014 season on the MotoGP web site, so if you want to watch the season, and don't have (or don't want) BT Sport, and you're prepared to pay €99/£83 for the season (just under a fiver per race weekend), the subscription site is here:
https://secure.motogp.com/en/Subscribe?utm_content=Full_Season_Opening&utm_campaign=2014_FullSeason
Commentators are likely to be Emmett and Harris as usual, so no more Charlie Cox, and no more Ryder/Moody tag-team tedium. Everyone's a winner baby, that's no lie.

BT sport comes bundled with my VirginMedia subscription One of the few reasons to keep paying.
How much is bt subscription.
If you have Sky, £15/month extra. If you have Virgin cable or BT Vision, nothing. Otherwise you either need to get Sky and party, or sign up for a 12 month BT Broadband contract and all that entails.
In comparison, 83 quid ain't so bad.
£83 a lot of petrol to ride the bike so think I'll give that a miss.

Same answer. There will be no coverage, live or otherwise, on BBC or Eurosport. It's BT Sport or motogp.com.

I think there are a whole lot more out there saying the same thing! Especially if that petrol is used to ride to a bikers pub that is screening it anyway! ;-)

To put the figure in context, £83 is for the whole season, so you'd have £4.60 to spend on 3.5 litres of fuel each race weekend. That gives you 30 miles or so, in total, to get to the pub and back. Twice, if you want to watch qualifying as well.
So if there's a biker pub within 8 miles of where you live, which you know will be showing MotoGP, and is open at 9am, or 2am for the flyaway rounds in the far east, and you don't mind riding or driving there in whatever weather mother nature throws at you that weekend, and you don't have something else on that weekend which stops you watching the event live, then you're sorted.
For the rest of us, £83 may not look like such a bad deal.

But on top of everything else that I pay for I'm not so sure.
For me that is a lot of money considering I had it for free for the last 15 or so years. I started watching MotoGP back in the 500cc days when it was shown on Channel 5 and then when it moved to the BBC. I have Sky here and have been enjoying the fuller coverage on Eurosport that I get included in my package. But for the main race I've always gone for the BBC which is paid for in my TV Licence.
So the basic question is what more am I getting for my £83 that I wasn't getting from the BBC?
So the basic question is what more am I getting for my £83 that I wasn't getting from the BBC?
No, the basic question is what more are you getting for your £83 than you'd get from the BBC next year. And the answer is "any MotoGP coverage whatsoever". Comparing against years gone by is pointless because the situation has changed.
You have three choices: Pay BT (whether directly, for a broadband package, or indirectly via Virgin), pay Dorna (via motogp.com), or don't watch the races. If you don't like those options, complain to Dorna. They're the ones who decided to sell the UK rights to a subscription-only provider. BBC, Channel 5 and Eurosport (who are also a subscription-only provider, remember) are irrelevant as of last November.

There is a 4th option as has been previously suggested, that of some sort of streaming site. Excluding the legal and or moral questions however.
Yes the BBC will no longer have it but the question remains valid. I previously paid for the coverage via the licence fee and in the grand scheme of things, that would have been a very small amount. But lets call it £1. Now I am being asked to pay 83 times more than I did before. I'm just wondering if the coverage will be 83 times better?
If its not better and I would guess its going to be about the same I'm left questioning the value of it.
£83 gives the benefit of being able to watch it live on any phone/tablet/pc/laptop that is capable at any location that has Internet.
Plus you get the full race weekend and all the additional bonus mid season stuff as well.
I'm considering the £83 as I won't always be able to make it to a mates to watch the races.
If you subscribe to BT Broadband you get it thrown in for free. This is clearly the strategy, as it undoubtedly was for Sky also, to attract customers to their wider services.
I need to call virgin to see how much it will cost to get XL tv package added to my current lot. It will prob still be more than the £83 dorna are asking. But then I don't need to pay it up front.

But not my TV? Also do I have to watch it Live? Often I'm out when the races are on so would tape them on the Sky+ box to watch them later.

Yep I understand their strategy, but having seen what they offer from the rest of the service, I would prefer to stay with Sky.
Additionally, I can't go to Virgin. I've checked and they do not offer the service in my area.
SH, guess it would depend on your set up. If you have a pc/laptop capable of connecting to your tv then yes.
In my case I hook my mac up to the tv via hdmi for watching stuff so if I don't go with the upgrade that's how I will do it via the website.
In terms of having to watch live, I'm not sure if they only do streams. I have never done it through the website before. They may do a live stream plus a download or watch later option too?
Hopefully someone else has used the service before and can shed some light on that aspect.
To be honest, I would not expect BT sports to be free to anyone soon. Considering the amount of cash they have haemorrhaged to acquire the rights to that many sports and the amount of customers getting it "free", they will have to reconsider this proposition or risk going bust. Unless they have a stupid amount of ads.

And that's a good point. If their spend does not attract the volume of customers they need then how will the cover their costs and get to profit. I would hate to move to them on a price one year that changes drastically in an upwardly direction the next.
Additionally for the money I could be spending through either BT or Dorna I would expect it to be totally advertisement free. Though I doubt that would happen...
Very good point SH, for £83 fora direct subscription to dorna I would be irked to have any ads. Unless they were for shiny motorbikes and accessories. But anything else would be annoying.
Plan b, got any mates with the relevant subscriptions you could gatecrash to watch the races?

Yes, it includes a full video on demand service. Go and have a look at the web site.
Someone mentioned paying in advance. You don't have to, they also offer one month and one weekend options, but the annual pass is significantly cheaper in the long run.
I fully expect BT to jack up their process in years to come. They're using it as a carrot at the moment to get people to sign up for BT Broadband. Every dealer offers a first hit free.

Might take a look and see which satellites/channels/providers will be carrying these feeds going forwards, seeing as i have a motorised system (already watch F1 for free, and i'd be interested in MotoGP this year too, looks like it could be a good year)
Apparently up to 30 channels receivable from the uk with a motorised system could be broadcasting this.
Often you can find the HD broadcast feeds which are open and at a much higher bitrate, which means better quality. Audio is always in english too.
I'll report what i find.

I am not on XL (as TV is not exactly my thing) so would have pay extra £15 to get it.

No way. My internet is fast enough to get it free in good quality :-)
I have now decided to get the annual video pass from Dorna for £83 (99.99 Euros). This will be split between me and our eldest so it works out ok averaged out over the season. It will be different to watching it on Eurosport as it's all through the laptop and only one laptop can log on at any one time. I'm sure we'll get used to it.
Looks like there's another (non-live) option - http://f1broadcasting.wordpress.com/2014/03/08/itv4-win-rights-to-screen-motogp-highlights/

no chance.
Not in the near future, unless it actively loses money.
The idea is to get you to buy as many products from the same company as possible so that it's more hassle to move. Plus, if you buy Sky TV why would you not have everything from them? That's a customer drain so BT Tv is worth it to the company just in customer retention terms.

I would have stuck with BT if I could watch the sport on my bt vision
Buy it was only offered in a online format if you don't have fiber (not an option in a village).
So i though see what's about and because I can get Talk Talk alot cheaper I went for that pluses euro sport player

Interesting, don't see how it links to by sport though, have you got/used it for this?
The xbmc is just like a. Now TV box but android
You can add apps
Using it on the pc though, how does it link to bt sport for free?
Is it just free if you have BT broadband?
On android there's naughty apps that let you tap into bt sport
I'd bet money someone going to stream it on a torrent
You can use most droid phone to watch as alot support the hdmi interface via a adaptor.
No droid I'm afraid, but I do have a pc and MacBook and apparently xbmc works on both so might look in to that
Not that I've ever done it but you have to pic carfuly what you use as security is alway a big worry.
Live Sports (droid) can be hit and miss at times (so a bloke in the pub told me)
Yeah that's true. Will have to make do with itv for now. Thankfully my mate who has bt sport will be back from holiday for the next race :)
Ask for his log in details lol
Nah, he has the channel with virgin. I'm struggling to find anyone I know with bt broadband!
let us know how you get on with xbmc.I looked at it and to be honest it seamed a ball ache ;)
Mate I think it is! Was watching some YouTube vids of it late last night to try and get my head round it. It just pulls streams to one place, could be foreign feeds as well. Thankfully I can pop round a mates to watch it now so won't bother. I did momentarily consider the video pass from dorna again last night
The video pass let's you watch the past rounds. I though about this too if it's advertising free it's probably worth it
Nah lets you watch live too, the €99 euro one seems to have ads on somewhere but the €136 one doesn't plus other stuff too.
As I am really only fussed about the races I would go for the €99 one. That is from the website, not the app which is like £15, that only has past shows and commentary and timing
I've not read all the pages here, so don't flame me....
I watched FP3 last night on BT Sport online.....all I can say is, for Motogp's sake, it needs to go back to BBC with the original commentators, (Steve Parish, Matt Roberts et al).
BT Sports commentators are bloody annoying, thick and, don't even know what corner is what turn number!
They have really spoilt the viewing experience.
But I'm not going to pay £83 to watch on the official gp site.
Greed is not the way to promote the sport.

I just popped up to the folks to catch some of the qualifying......... I cannot believe how poor it is.
Glad I'm nor paying for it.
Has anyone else seen the bt coverage yet? My mate said the hd quality seemed a lot better than bbc?
Nah lets you watch live too, the €99 euro one seems to have ads on somewhere
I've been watching the feed on the web site on the cheaper package all weekend and haven't seen an ad yet. It's just the global feed with no frills but, crucially, no Charlie Cox to make my blood boil and no Julian Ryder to send me to sleep.
Fair one, not sure where the ads are. Just saw it when trying to compare the packages.
Out of interest, what Internet speed you got and how's the quality? You watched anything live?
I watched FP3 and qualifying live yesterday, Moto3 race live today. I'm on 12Mb DSL and I've just checked the bitrate which seems to be about 4Mbps at the moment.
I've had it freeze a few times, and the artifacts on panning shots are terrible at times. The static shots are crisp as anything though - watching the podium at the moment and I can practically count the hairs on their chins. Not hard, they're Moto3 riders.

What apps would those be?
Bit more probing, there are two streams, one around 4Mbps and one around 700Mbps. The high rate is great, the low rate is blocky, and I seemed to switch from the high rate to the low rate as soon as the bikes were on the grid.
Ho hum.
Cheers for the info Ogden, something to bear in mind if I break and buy the pass!

that was a great start for the season !!!!!!!
Indeed it was!! No spoilers though!
Video quality issues disappeared for the final race, all in glorious HD.
One thing I hadn't expected was markers on the timeline tagged for events. Key overtakes, crashes, etc. Time shifting seems to work too.

Well ITV4's coverage was ok. No qualifying review or build up just straight into the grid and the main race. Little bit of post race interview in the winners enclosure and then the podium presentation. Then about 5 minutes of the Moto2 and Moto3.
I would have preferred a little more post race interviews with some of the other riders lower down the finishing order Redding and Crutchlow in particular, could have cut the podium presentation down for it. The lower classes wasn't really worth it. Don't get me wrong I was loving the Moto2 last year but the coverage really wasn't the right length for this format of program. It was to long to be real highlights such as a couple of big overtakes, how the positions changed, and the crash reel. But to short to really get into the action. I would have cut the Moto2 and Moto3 to about a minute or so to cover more of the MotoGP.
But it was better than nothing so pleased I could watch the action.
However doing it this way does present a slight problem, I had to avoid a couple of websites for a day or so and the email I got mid morning at work was luckily titled so that went straight in the bin. Lets hope this highlights coverage will continue until the BBC earns their licence money and brings MotoGP coverage back where it belongs.

Just found motogp live on sport1 /dsf on the 19.2 satellite.
Its in german but the race is live. Given that f1 is also on rtl (19.2) you can watch them both over the season. :)
I've used the Motogp.com web site for two races now, and it's proving to be worth every penny. Came in from the garage yesterday to check what time the Moto3 race was on, only to see the bikes in Parc Fermé. Fortunately the web player has a timeline with highlights marked, so I just skipped back an hour and watched the race.
Eurosport Player seems to have the same feature, which came in handy as I'd done exactly the same thing with WSBK race 2 earlier in the day.

I'm assuming you're on the astra satellite at 28.2E.
You can fit a 2nd LNB with an offset to pick up 19.2E.
Alternatively, go motorised as i have. Countless satellites to use then. Not massively expensive either.
Ive got two separate Dishes a level ,Meter & compass !
basic but it(used to) work.
I would find 28.2 which is your sky satellite and and move your 2nd dish slightly to the right.
I have 2 dishes and 19.2 is pointing more south. The signal is very strong for 19.2. I then did a channel scan on my box. I use a 4lnb dish which saves on a motor.
The channels are unencrypted so should just work once you find the satellite.
Clearly my eyes arent what they used to be so according to google it should be 19.2deg east of south
