Received the used Canon 70-300 IS USM I ordered from MPB yesterday. It's the standard black one - cannot justify the L series version. Looks in very good nick and it was very well packaged. But, when I tried it I found the IS is very noisy. The 18-135 kit lens is completely silent in this regard so do do any of you have this lens and do they all do this? Have also found the extending part of the lens barrel is a bit rattly, again are they all like that?

Sir Trev I too have this lens and yes it is as you describe it. Lens barrel seems ok to me though only makes noise when focusing. When panning though you get a definite click with Is coming on.

I've got the L series and that isn't completely silent.

Big, big thanks to the folks at Jessops in High Wycombe. Popped in this afternoon to get a tethered lens cap and UV filter for the 70-300 and asked if they had a display model I could look at. They fished a new one out from the stock room and put my mind at rest about the lens barrel - it had never occurred to me that the IS motor needs a bit of play in this to be effective. Mine is slightly loser as it's been used but not much at all.
They happily chatted about this and ways I can get the best from the 700d I got from them a couple of months ago. I know they are not always as cheap as Amazon or Wex but I really, really hope they survive as there are so few places on the high street we can go these days for help like this.
