View Full Version : Which 1000cc supersports bike and why?

I have to admit to being a bit of a fanboy for all of the 1000cc supersports bikes, but if I was to buy one, I would have no idea which I'd go for (Obviously in reality you'd get a test ride and see what suited you the most).

But: Here are the bikes you can pick from, average prices included ;)

Suzuki GSXR 1000 L4 £9,495
Honda CBR 1000 £10,250 (not SP)
Yamaha R1 £10,750
Kawasaki ZX10R £11,950

The other bikes (BMW, Ducati etc) have all been excluded on grounds of cost :)

blade or R1 for me.. ninja's seem to have a nob stigma attached to them (apologies to any ninja owners on here) and GSX-R's are ten a penny.

R1 hands down if I could afford it.

I have a pet hatred for kwaks and the gixxer and blade don't really do it for me

I have to admit the blade comes over as a tad soulless. Yes it does everything, but seems to take away the edge.

It would have to be the gsxR for me...always always been a fan of them!

Which one do you like the look of? At this point the class is pretty well developed so none of them are going to be bad, they've all spent the last 10 years being road-tested against each other.

It must be said, the CBR having ABS would be a consideration for me, having dropped a bike locking the front once or twice in my life, it'd be nice to have, especially in iffy conditions.

I'll PM you my address, let me know when the delivery date should be and I'll make sure someone's there to sign for it...

I have ridden a S1000RR so if money was not an issue i'd have one of them in the garage :-)

I used to own a K8 GSXR which I managed to snap in half after a low speed crash so I doubt i'd buy a GSXR again.

but my new bike will probably a 09/10 Blade. I have ridden one and IMO is hard to beat on the road.

The BMW looks great, but to be honest I couldn't justify the extra money - nor the wonky styling.

The Blade was my top, although a GSXR is the bike that got me into bikes (albeit a long time ago!)

The Yamaha was my favourite for years, but it's starting to look a bit chunky.

Certainly for me, my main consideration is fit - although I doubt they are that different. Being 6ft 4, I want something at least slightly comfy ;)

Its down to test rides for ya. I like the styling on the kwak.

I may be the only one but I just don't see the point in a litre sportsbike on the road. I struggle to use the street to its potential and would get bored not being able to use an engine fully on a 1000.

I'd get a KTM RC8.

I know what you're saying about not being able to use it on the road - but to be fair that's true of a lot of the motorbikes that I've had.

An SV1000 will quite quickly see you above 100mph and at the point of losing your license without so much as trying - hell, even a 650 can do that!

I don't want a 1000 for any other reason other than I want one. I suspect that I will at some point possibly get bored of not being able to use it and having a vehicle that can out perform my abilities by so much, but I won't know until I have one and at least give it a go!

On the flip side it depends what you are using it for. I have a mate that's just got a new kwak before that had an r1, I said what's the point and he swears it's better for when he has to commute as uses less fuel. His reasoning is that you don't need all the revs and power etc for just "pootling" about.

Not ridden any thou's yet so can't really say.

This I find is the main difference between cars and bikes. Unless you are minted that is.

You buy a car to meet needs. You buy a bike because you want one and the way it makes you feel. In my opinion anyway.

R1. Gorgeous sound.

Bwing biased, I'd go for the Kwak out of that list.

After that, Italian :-P

the zx10r as it has all the tech :)

...... and GSX-R's are ten a penny.

There's a very good reason for that......they were, and still are, an extremely good bike!

I don't think there is such a thing as a "bad" Superbike these days, as has been said you won't separate them on performance, leastways not on the road and if you can on the track you wouldn't be asking our advice.....

If you are serious about buying new then ride each of them and buy the one you fall in love with. They are seriously engaging bits of kit!

You could pick one because you liked the looks, or for ergonomics, or for best price, and not really go wrong, they're all so good.
I'd buy the Honda, because I tend to keep bikes a long time, and Honda has this in mind when they build them. And, they keep parts in stock, all parts, for 20 years. (I bought a 9 year old Yamaha in 1997, at which time, internal fork parts, like bushings, were "obsolete".)
Hondas also tend to be most user friendly for most everybody.

Blade. Just because it's reliability and build quality.
Of course it's not always what the head says wins the day.
I'd have a cross plane R1. Chance the gearbox issue and by a warranty.

Excluding the current European missiles (s1000rr, mv and Ducati). Used hp4's are same price as new.

Smart money is rc8 if you want European (change from 9k). Compared to the Japanese it's a tractor and dated.

If your wanting Japanese: blade, gsxr, zx10, r1 in that order.
As has been mentioned Joe public won't be able to tell a massive difference between any of them since 2008 (2004 for the blade and Yamaha).
MCN have compared the old crop and new ones and can hardly tell the difference and said the best value buy is the gsxr as it works perfectly on the road (engine design is about 5 years behind Kawasaki)

I'd get a KTM RC8.

+1 to that, with a small but meaningful addition, KTM RC8R

It would be the ZX10 for me. Some say.. it's been hit with the ugly stick, but I think it's functionally beautiful. I also had a new Z1100R Lawson rep in 1985 and did 25K on her, so I'll always love a green Kwaker. For slightly more money I'd take an F4, but if I had a proper wedge to spend, I'd go for a well specced Panigale. There was one in our group at Donington last April and it was simply gorgeous and stunningly fast in Inters. Saying all that... I've had my SV1000SZ for nearly seven years now and done a lot of road and track miles. I keep looking, but never got around to replacing her :smt055.

Your powers of observation are weak, an appointment at specsavers is advisable :bigsmurf:

Out of that lot...the 'blade.

However, having done the litre bike thing I would not buy another one. The bestest, most fun bike I had was a 600 super sport (CBR RR). Enough of everything and not too much of anything.

...but if the litre itch needs to be scratched...the 'blade.

The fazer1000, whilst not a super sports bike is a handy tool.

I've ridden an R1, 3 different kinds of Fireblades, a SV1000 and a S1000RR

Out of those I'd go for the Bimmer no question, it's a league above and although it's more money it's much better value when you think of the kit you get on it. Call me a fanny but after highsiding my Blade I wouldn't get another litre bike which didn't have traction control.

Not ridden the ZX10 which I have heard is also good and has TC so I'd recommend testing the BMW and the ZX10

The original carb ones go for daft money and are slightly detuned from the r1

You can if you like have a system fitted.
Race engineering(Dunmow) had one being plumbed into a 675 a few weeks back
And we can discount the Bemmer as Dave did say

If you want to ride like Rossi by the blade. Speed and smoothness has never come so easy.
If u prefer to feel like you made the bike do it by the gixer or the ninja.

The only other thing to consider is which one makes you feel great just looking at it??

Looks like the Blade is your best option then. Or the R1. Although I found the R1 a bit mental for the road. The Blade is more civilised.
