View Full Version : Buy a bike that's done 30 trackdays?
Would you buy a 1000cc road bike that had done around 30 track days, if you knew it had been very well serviced at more than the correct intervals, with two of three oil and filter changes a year, never been down the road and well looked after ? Overall milage about 26000.

Are you thinking of selling your thou? I would if it was the right bike, but all comes down to how much. I would want to pay slightly less than one which hadn't been tracked probably ;)

I would. It would take more than 30 TD's to knacker a well looked after engine

Yes, no reason not to. If it's been suitably treated - which is true whatever bike you buy, tracked or not - it'll likely be in better condition than the ones that have been commuted all their sorry lives, and left unused in a garage for several months over the winter.
And seeing as it's a 1000cc machine it won't have been worked that hard - it's not a 250 two stroke.

I assumed 'never been down the road' meant 'never been down the track' either.

Grass, gravel traps, tyre walls... lol
Anyway, if it sounds alright and shifts gears alright 30 trackdays wouldn't bother me at all.

yeah, me too - if all the usual stuff checks out, then what's the big deal? at least you know its history - how many bikes for sale have done that many TDs or worse and you never get told?
MICK..

You have sussed me out there, and it is only thinking. I genuinely want to know what people think. The SV thou is my only bike and I've been doing 5 or 6 trackdays a year on her and the next is her 30th. I also ride to and from every trackday. There are about 9 or ten of us rocking up to each event now and everybody else ( except one part timer ) is bringing dedicated trackbikes with WOW's and warmers to the event. I'm tempted to go that route myself, but the thou would have to go to finance the package. I don't want to convert the SZ because she is still VGC, with no crashes. I just don't know what to do ? Here is some footage (http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CC8QtwIwAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DMWn Dt31ekAs&ei=wqsEU6bcDcyV7Abn8oCICA&usg=AFQjCNHt1MFOz5-HP0sAsPCp2cFocmekgg&sig2=3o1bdvrxGLLC1K0fXOs6wQ&bvm=bv.61535280,d.ZGU) of her last outing at Oulton in October. See how easily the GSXR750K7 eats her up. The white CBR at Shell is a young club racer on his race bike.

Just show people your footage and they'll realise it's been thrashed less than some road bikes :D

You stole the words right out of my mouth......
Actually joking apart about the only thing that gets a slightly harder time on the track are the brakes and they are fairly easy to monitor and not exactly expensive to replace. If that was a 750 following you not even that was being thrashed particularly, just about as soon as he gets to full throttle he's off it onto the brakes again. I'd much rather buy a well ridden track bike than one off some tool that spent his time trying to pull wheelies on the rev limiter over Chelsea Bridge....

Attention to detail please......that's "you took" :)

"Stole", "took" the difference is negligible.

I guess that depends on the environment you work in..... Anyway I would just like to point out that I never been anywhere close to kissing you.....

I didn't suggest you had ever kissed me.

Personally I would buy it for track saying etc but.......
IMO a 1000cc bike will teach you nothing about track riding. All you will do is stop it into corners pick it up and hammer it to the next. A 600/750 will make you carry corner speed concentrate more on braking correctly etc.

I beg to differ. There was a day when the big bikes were significantly heavier and they did require a different approach however those times are well behind us. I accept that a bad rider can made up some lap time riding in the manner you describe but my GSXR1000 carries as much corner speed now as I did when I raced open 250s 15 years ago......
What a big bike will teach you is to be delicate with the throttle, unless of course you ride one of those new namby pamby things with traction control........
Excellent debate and repartee, but what am I going to do this year ? Run the thou for another year or sell her on while she’s still got her looks and get a super sports ? Here's another vid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrvhaS7KzWo) from earlier last year. Different Gixxer 750K5 as camera bike.

Ratty, how stock is the suspension on your SV? Apart from the obvious difference in the way the power is delivered on an IL4 Superbike they all come with fairly track oriented suspension, where the SV clearly doesn't. If it's lap times you are chasing then it may be "cheaper" to tweak what you have? If on the other hand you really do want that "Oh my God, I'm going to die" feeling then there is no substitute for 170+BHP....!
30 ride outs be about 3 years worth.
So in all its not a deal breaker. Plus the roads would have a pot holes

The suspension is pretty much stock. I had the shock refurbished by KAIS last winter and Nick altered the shimming slightly. Stock spring. Only thing I've done at the front is heavier fork oil. I've dialed in my own settings. I have also stripped, cleaned and regreased the mounts and linkages, swingarm bearings and shimmed out the end float from the swing arm. She handles pretty well I think, but the problem is the all up weight. Shes about 25 - 30kg heavier than say a Gixxer 750 track bike. To stay with the lads I'm going to need a better Master cylinder, QA throttle, sportier exhaust with remap and a diet. Selling the SV and buying modded road going supersport is probably my best option, but would anybody buy the SV. I think I'd have to be fairly honest about her track habit during a sale. Hence this thread to see what people really think.

Personally I don't think you'd have much problem selling as you've obviously been keen to look after it and a lot of people will buy from an honest enthusiast.

Another thing I forgot to mention if you're undecided between a Superbike and a smaller Supersport is the running cost, especially tyres. I'm lucky if I can make a rear last a day on the 1000 (at some circuits like Lydden or Brands I have to turn it round at lunch time) where my son who runs exactly the same tyres (although 180 rather than 190 size) on his GSXR 600 can do several days on a rear, and his lap times are practically the same as mine.........unless we go to Silverstone or Spa where I can really let her loose!

Maybe his just lighter too. ;) less load
I wouldn't use a 1000 four for the track, but I am tempted by the Gixxer 750, preferably a K6 / 7. I'd like to try a 600 again. I've not ridden a supersport 600 since my first track experience on one of Ron's at Donington, back in 2005. I do like the forgiving drive the big V offers out of the slower turns. Anybody want to lend me an 848 for a day ? My thou does look pretty at the track though, next to all those tatty track bikes.
