View Full Version : Multi bike or single bike insurance?

I currently have the SV and the GS insured fully comp with Hastings, 6 years NCD protected on a multibike policy, pillion cover on the GS and not for the SV. Now I've just had my renewal at £200.
However, if I go onto the comparison sites and do them as 2 separate policies it comes in at £89 for the GS and £84 for the SV. Cheaper still if I were to do the SV TPFT as it is SORN'd at present.
So I'm trying to work out why a supposedly 'cheaper if you insure more than one bike with us' policy is coming in more expensive. I get that they are covering 2 bikes if they were to both get stolen from my locked garage or the house burnt down, but I can only ride one at a time and it's one lot of legal cover.
Any advice?

IIRC, your ncb can only be used on one bike when taking out separate policies, whereas going multi bikemail they are on all bikes covered on the policy.
I could be wrong, but CN explained it along those lines when I had three bikes to insure, and the Raptor was causing a little headache with expensive insurance.
Not that it matters now, as all my personal bikes are now covered under multi bike classic insurance, which is pennies.

I believe you are not able to apply NCD on 2 separate policies. So you'd effectively have no NCD on one bike. I might be wrong though

Yep, I had the same problem when I got my BFR, couldn't add it to the GSXR policy and it was £400 more with no no claims, had to wait for the GSXR policy to expire then take a new multi bike policy.

I'd give my left testicle for my SV insurance to be £84.
I am always a little wary of on line quotes, as you can't speak to someone and make sure you know what your getting and they know what modifications have been done to your bike.
I recently received my renewal through, I too have an Sv, and a GS (take it you mean Beemer) and the renewal had gone up by about £100.
I decided to get a quote from them for just the SV, which is quite heavily modified, and they still wanted £200 just for that, after dropping the annual mileage down and adding the bm back on it came out at £208.
I do have a VFR that hasn't turned a wheel in ten years, and was told I could add that at a later date, at not much extra cost.
That price is for brand new customers only :)
The current motor insurance business model relies heavily on punishing your most loyal customers.

IME they're a wasteofookintime and all end up being more expensive than 2 policies, think they're meant for lazy people who don't want to do job twice.
Same with various "6 wheel" policies offered.

Mine was loads cheaper

What I may do is just ring them up and haggle a bit anyway. I do love to haggle for everything. The SV is going back on the road this year at some point, even though the GS will be the main bike as my reason for SORNing the SV is still an issue (sore heel, still not better).
As for special deals for new customers, I love to ask the person at the call centre if they have the up to date figures for the churn rates at their company and if they are better or worse than the UK average (22%) and what their specific guidelines are to ensure that they personally achieve the highest levels of customer retention in an overcrowded market. At which point they usually offer a discount or start to cry quietly.

fair enough, I obviously don't fit the target market :)
I wish my insurance was less than £90 ...i found that the multibike policy was very close to the 2 separate bike policies. I also found it didnt not cost much to add a second bike to an existing policy after it ran for a few months.
I mean how many bikes can one ride at one time ?:)
While on the subject of insurance got my renewal last week, went to meerkats.com and the same company was quoting £100 less on there!

I consider paying a couple of hundred quid for two bikes fairly cheap. Bearing in mind where I live, and one of them would likely be written off if it so much as broke an indicator pod. They're 400 quid new and like hens teeth second hand, as are most parts. I don't think its bad at all
I've pretty much got maximum no claims. Ten years is rather a lot!
Mr Pegasus has just renewed his insurance for the big beast. The ZX14 forum are spitting feathers as none of them can get theirs insured for less than £250. IIRC hes just got his insured for less than 200 quid, with all the bells and whistles included in his premium, fully comp  Jammy!
We concern ourselves more with the car insurance. Finally after four years I'm not classed as a new driver anymore :smt076

Yes it is cheaper, but if I can get it down even more I will. It helps that we live in what is considered a safe area and the place I am most likely to leave it parked away from home is at work. Bike thieves will have to get past big grumpy Dougie the gateman before they can get to my bike, and frankly, some days our CEO struggles to get past him when he's in a jobsworth mood.

Never been cheaper for me either, few years ago I decided to get a multi bike the year after I got the drz, it was way more money, even with 0 ncb on one bike it still came back cheaper with two policies.
As I've had the drz 4 years now I've built up 4 years ncb on that too so I can be choosy.
Brum ain't a cheap city to insure anything, I live in a decent area too, but I pay more than some guys 10 years younger with less ncb, they just live in different parts of the country.
Might depend on the bike. With 4 years ncb for the vfr and the gsxr it was about 350. Gsxr on its own with no ncb was 500!

I have to say I have found e-bike works very well for me. I've quite a few bikes in the garage and their policy allows me to insure up to four at a time, and I can change the list instantly online without any cost if I want to ride one of the bikes that isn't currently covered. My "biggest" road bike in terms of cc is actually my SV 650 and several of them are quite heavily modified but I'm still paying under £200 TPFT.
The downside I guess is that if the garage were to go up in flames or some scumbag actually managed to get past my security then I'd only get paid out on the four that were insured at the time, but then the most valuable bike in there is my track bike and I can't insure that anyhow! Oh, and with e-bike you don't get a third party extension to ride your mates bikes if that's important to you.

I used to be with ebike but having no phone number drove me mad. Third party not an issue as unless it's a lowered bike I probably could not ride it anyway.

There is a phone number, it's just a premium rate.
They are very good on their email communication & you can get them to call you.

True, but the phone line is really expensive and Stu emailed them twice requesting a call and they never did.
try www.saynoto0870.com and search for the company or number
eg
e bike 0870 753 1124 ----- 01454 634501 Geographical numbers Works on 9/09/09
E Bike 0844 414 2976 ----- 0117 329 0734 EBikes.UK.com is a UK supplier of qualit
ebike 0845 683 0745 ----- 0800 0546045 this is the quotation no, ask to be put through to another dept
there are a few other numbers in the search.

I think we tried that and when they transfer you it reverts to a premium rate or cuts you off.

that's because it's a premium rate line . . .
Email the issue and try to get it resolved that way. If you can't then request a call. The 'up' side to an email is that it is in writing-what they say and the outcome. I got this when I wanted to confirm whether or not I had pillion cover.
Are you going to trust your insurance to a company that can't manage a phone call.
I got CN to drop from £400 to £320 from the online quote and cut the exsses to £300 from £500.
But they can't beat the dreaded Mce who are £220.
When I had the 'prillia the suspension lower pushed up the premium by 30%!!!
I have just done as comparison for a multistrada. 20 YO, 3 years Ncb garaged, £248 fully comp!!
MCE. I'm with them at the moment and don't have a problem. Added some mods to the bike and they didn't charge even thought they were mid term. Seems I may have been lucky as I have had good service from them!

You must be the only one who has!

Ebike are a broker. They have a non premium rate claims line, and a claims company deals with the claim. I claimed with them 2 years ago. Only 2 weeks between writing the bike & and me having a cheque.

Have you claimed on the policy or used there breakdown service?

I was with MCE n I used the breakdown service. Couldn't fault them really, even took me home even though I was outside the 10 mile radius n the garage was closer.

Nope not needed too. Maybe why I don't have a problem with them!
