View Full Version : How much brake drag is too much?

Does anyone have a rule of thumb on when brake drag is too much? I've just put a new rear disc on the tiger and it's not easy to spin the wheel freely. Probably does a quarter revolution with a good tug. I've also checked the temp after a minute of riding, stopping with no rear brake and the disc is too hot to touch.

I know really its too much, so will need to look at it more. I think the slider pins aren't letting the calliper slide enough (needs a good overhaul soon) but still would be interested in peoples' thoughts on how you gauge it.

Any drag from the brake is too much. The wheel should spin freely and stop on its own. If it drags the disc will heat up, and eventually the caliper and then the fluid. When the fluid expands then you will have bigger problems!

Did you push the pads/pistons back in the caliper? I use a medium size (clean) pry bar to push them back in carefully. Always worth taking the pads out and smearing a bit of copaslip where needed when playing with a caliper.

My explorer was doing the same recently, bit of surface rust was the culprit in my case, the wheel should spin freely, take it for a longer ride and check what it's like.
