View Full Version : SV650 Clutch/Gearbox problem
Hi,
My 04 SV has a bad problem at the mo,
I presume is a gearbox/clutch failure, it will not pull off in any gear but 1st, even when you do in 1st, any other gear and it wont pull off.
The Neutral light is on but still stalls letting the clutch out.
Probably not explained very well but, if any light can be shed it would be a great help thanks.

So it starts and runs okay? Does it roll back and forth fine? So what happens when you pul lthe clutch in and knock it into gear? What then?

It starts and runs yes, but you have to give it a bit of revs sometimes since this has happened.
Sometimes it will if you can get it into gear then you can roll it fine.
Hard to explain it will feel like you have put into gear but even if you rev it to 4k and let the clutch out it will just go no where until the revs drop then it will cut out

Humour me here... Why are you trying to pull away in any gear other than 1st?
Because I know there's a problem so I am seeing how different variables are acting...

Ok. First thing, have you checked your clutch and chain adjustment?
Hi, no I have had to leave the bike at my friends

First thing you need to do is to check and adjust where needed the clutch and the chain. If your unsure there is some good information and how to guides on here, just give it a little search. After that try again and report back.
Bit of an update, got the bike home, once the bike has warmed up you can get it into gear and N you can ride in first but with a knocking sound from below, also in N there is a knocking sound but if you pull the clutch in it stops, pull off in 1st shift up to 2nd /3rd/4th revs like in N get to 5th and 6th you can ride

Lets rule out the simple things first.
No need to waste time checking, it's the gear box, new engine needed

I'm genuinely wondering, without checking anything what makes you so sure?
My uncle who is a mechanic has had a check over it, clutch works fine, bike will roll forward not backwards in what ever gear, thanks for the help but I'm now saving.

I was going to suggest checking the clutch basket isn't wobbling around, i found with mine the centre nut wasn't quite tight enough. Youc an get the clutch cover off without needing a new gasket as it has an O ring, and on the sidestand it shouldn't dribble any oil.
Would this explain gears 2/3/4 not being there?
The bike now does not start, when you turn the ignition and that 3 second noise you get sounds very weak if you no what noise i mean, battery?

Not necessarily but I'm finding it difficult pieceing together all the bits and pieces. Did you check for any sideways play in the gearshift shaft (in and out of the crankcase i.e. lengthwise)? This could explain a lot on its own. Have you tried shifting with the engine off? You need to move the back wheel a bit to do this as these gearboxes can't always shift when stationary.
PS you might want to indicate your location in your advert, even in the vaguest terms would help folks
I will check for that, yes you can feel it shift 1 N 2 3 4 when engine is off.
When sometimes its stuck in gear you can roll it backwards just not forwards, when you get it into N and roll it forward you can hear a clicking/knocking sound from the gearbox i think, i will do a video when im home

Any news? There are various questions above
Update to this thread:
I recently got this bike (was advertised as spares repairs on ebay) and have removed and stripped the motor, the problem was the dogs on the 2nd driven gear all sheared off and a snapped selector fork plus some other dinks in the gear teeth from debris flying about.
Now looking for a suitable replacement gear set :o
