I've been bought a car satnav for my birthday and I would like to be able to charge it on the bike for use on it too as and when needed. I'm sure you can get and fit the 9 volt connector thing as I'm sure I've seen them on bikes. so can anyone recommend exactly what I would need, where I would get it from and approximately how much it'd all be please? and give me an idea of the best way to fit it. all useful/sensible ideas gratefully accepted! ;) :D

9 volt? Surely you mean 12volt?
Does it have a cigarette lighter lead?

If you are indeed after a 12v socket this is what I'm using (instead of the inline fuse I'm using one of Bibio's fantastic gizmos). The bracket can be cable tied to front fork or frame under rear seat, or you can Velcro the bracket to the bike somewhere. Mine's survived the winter so seems to be pretty waterproof.

Need to see the info label on the back of the unit and the connector, what brand and model?
I got a lighter socket off eBay, designed for use on bikes so the unit it's self is waterproof and with the cover on, won't short etc. has an in line fuse and quick release connectors.
Haven't actually fitted to the bike yet though, if I can find it and all the cabling, we can sort something out for it?

I have one of these fitted, been on 2 years now no issues.

You can even get different ends for different devices. I wired it in so it's only live when key is on, plus I also like that I can switch it off when not used for awhile.
Have cable routed so it comes out the hole at the front of my frame with the rest of the loom - pointy - so when not plugged in I can just poke it inside the frame, nice and tidy.

ok quite probably you are right mav, tis just me being my usual muppet self on that one! lol. thanks for the correction.
yes, it does have the cigarette lighter lead.

it is a garmin nuvi 2567 LM, why should this make a difference?

sounds very interesting and may quite possibly be the thing for me.

that also looks good, but as mine is a garmin I shall be having to look for a different end bit for it so that it'll fit my sat nav. thanks.
Cool, I'll take a look a look for it when I get home from work mate. If I can find it and all the bits I will post a photo and if you are interested you an PM me?

Chris, the reason I asked about the model etc because you were asking about 9v, tomtom for instance runs at 5v, I didn't realise you meant a standard 12v plug.

If you want a waterproof 12v socket, get one from towzatronics, pretty much everyone I know has used their sockets, I've had 3 of them on different bikes.

ah ok, sorry phil, I didn't realise this about other brands using different voltages etc. I just thought they were all the same no matter what, if you've got the connector thing that goes into what always would have been the cigarette lighter thing in a car. then I just thought it would be a general thing and used on all models.
so in that case is my garmin going to require a 12v one?
Would have thought the charger cable for the unit and the bits inside would sort itself out.
All cars are 12v output in the lighter socket so if any brand runs on anything different it would need to be sorted internally.

it says on the charger itself "INPUT:10-30V"
does this mean it'll be needing the standard 12v then?
Yeah that's fine then mate. All you need is the right socket to plug it in to.
I assume it is a normal cig lighter plug?

yep it's a normal cig lighter plug as far as I can tell.

I've got one on the SV. When you come out have a look at how it's wired in. If I managed it a Muppet like you will be able to do it.
Here you go mate:
This is the main socket, it's got a rubber weather cap and the wires going in are sealed. It also has a mount built in with 2 holes for fitting:

It's got spade connectors on a short pair of wires:

And 2 individual lengths of wire for the positive and negative feed.
The positive has an in line fuse near the battery end which has a circular connector:

Unfortunately a well meaning but slightly ham fisted house mate managed to pull the circular connector off the negative wire when cleaning up:

Yep, the official 12v plug chargers that come with the satnavs have step down transformers built in to the plug, never cut one off and try to hard wire in without checking the voltage the satnav receives.

I have the same plug from ultimate add-ons - however it is live all the time. How did you manage to plug it so it is only live with the ignition on?
