My SV is needing new tyres soon. Just wondering what tyres other people have and any opinions of which ones to go for or not go for.

I was looking at the MAXXIS Diamond sport tyres:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Suzuki-SV650-Maxxis-Diamond-Sport-Touring-Tyres-/171229833643?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item27de17e9ab#ht_1328wt_883

Has anyone used these and also have an opinoin on them?

On the ZX6 I have Maxxis Supermax Touring, (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Maxxis-120-70-ZR17-Maxxis-Supermax-Touring-Front-Tyre-/220751929540?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item3365d720c4)

Good enough cheap as chips & work wet or dry

+1 for PR3's absolutely worth the extra money, put nearly 4500 miles through them so far and they have barely worn at all and I haven't had any problems with them.

Conti road attack for me, best tires I've used so far!

The Maxis Diamonds must be a new release. I wanted them for my K7 a year ago and they said they wouldn't be doing them in SV fit. Ended up with Conti Motions which I cannot fault.

Hi Del, what do you use your bike for, commuting, track days, touring? I have heard lots of great things about Michelin Pilot Power 3s so I grabbed a pair when I saw a good deal a few weeks back. I bought them for spirited recreational riding and the odd track day. If I was doing lots of commuting or planning on touring I would have made a very different choice. My current Avon Storm (R) and Pirelli Angel (F) have been great over winter, they've not put a foot wrong but for spring and summer I chose something a bit sportier. Another poster here wrote that all modern motorcycle tyres are bloody brilliant and I tend to agree with him.

PR3's get my endorsement, they're pretty freaking awesome. Have PR4 Trails at the moment with no trouble on the Strom.

Your be hard pushed to find a pony hoop.
It's just something like a Pirreli Super Corsa needs heat to work (and boy do they work),
Or a less track day focused type like the Metzeler sport tec M5 that work when it's wet and cool.
Most will have more grip than the average rider has talent

Put PR4's on a couple of weeks ago and really impressed

Jules. Il be using the bike to commute to work most days in the summer but also for the fun after work. I only travel 6 miles to work so not that much of a distance.

Thanks for the replys. Got a bit of thinking to do now. Is it best to keep front and back tyres the same brand and model?

Probably, again it's a personal preference, tyres are designed to work as a pair, however that doesn't mean that mismatched tyres won't work, some people even prefer these combinations. If you're replacing both go for a pair, if only one needs replacing just replace that and get the other half of the pair when required if you like them.

Dunlop Roadsmarts 2 for me - done about 4000 miles on them so far (riding throughout the year) and they are barely worn.
Great both in wet & dry.

I've gone for Metzler based on past experience, on my CBR I used to be able to run them well past the legal limit without any adverse handling. By contrast the Michelins I've just taken off my SV were both worn into strange shapes (square at the back, sort of lopsided triangle at the front) and were causing handling problems. It's much too early to say how well the Metzlers will turn out in the long run.

Maxxis. Great tyres. No issues...awesome price. Now they do the diamond ones in sv fit too. They will be my next purchase

The problem with tyre reviews is that almost none of us test similar unworn tyres back to back.

We all take a shot pair of tyres off and put something with fresh rubber & profile on in place, unsurprisingly the majority of reviews for tyres are overwhelmingly positive at time of fitting.

Get a pair of sports-touring tyres that suit your budget, you'll have to try hard to buy a bad one nowadays.

Impressive isnt it mate.

Especially seems as i dont hang about. I like abit of keen riding on the roads im familiar with, and I'm never looking for more grip or agility with the pr3's.

I cant say a bad word about em tbh.

They arent cheap, but offset it against how long they last and the performance they provide, i think theyre more than worth the extra.

I would not recommend maxis diamonds, they are ok when new but take abit of getting used if you push tyres abit as they squish when on the edges of the tyre. However, when they come to near the end of there life they are unforgiving and will let go with no warning. This said if your after a cheap set of tyres that will last a long time as far as tread depth is concerned then go for them.

I wonder why they class the Pilot Roads as "Summer" tyres?

Shame, that's what I needed for a few journeys where I was on ice or potential ice for a good part of the way. I don't suppose studs grip tarmac that well though.

There great all year tyres maybe becausee softer compound so stickier in summer for grip

otaylor38
22-03-14, 11:25 PM
Winter tyres tend to be a softer compound which doesnt go hard until a much lower temps.

Iv had em on the car before and theyre much better at low temps, wet roads and miles better in the snow.

Which made me think. Do they do tyres like that for bikes?

Realistically. Its not above 7 degrees here for about 7 months of the year haha.

otaylor38

Pr3's All year tyres maybe. The disperse water pretty well, and grip well in the wet.

I decided to test them on one wet day last year. Hit a long sweeping corner i know very well and kept getting faster and faster. I ran out of balls at 80mph odd just incase there was any oil or whatever. They didnt do so much as squirm at that, and i can only do it just a tad faster in the dry.
