View Full Version : Now i understand the car vs bike debate..

Iv never really understood it. I mean, bikes are clearly faster. Iv never come across a car on the road that can beat even a little sv off the line, let alone an s1000rr or whatever.
Iv been in a few fast cars. Porsche cayenne, bmw z4m n a few other things and i was impressed, but its nout id have problems keeping up with on a bike.
Until tonight. I went out in a 2012 nissan GTR, and oh my god. Its soo fast. It actually blew my mind slightly. It struggled to get the power down because its wet, it was still spinning all 4 wheel. It went like an absolute mentalist though, just threw you back in your seat n made you see blurry in seconds.
I cant wait to go out in the dry haha.
It made me realise though. I need to ride a really fast bike, even if its just for the day. See what a properly fast performance bike is like.
So, what do you guys think? Worth a test ride? Haha.
Look forward to your replies :).
Cars will always have more grip, coupled with the millions of £ worth of R&D that goes into the stability control in cars like the GTR, it makes them bloody fast, safe and easy to drive. Especially in the wet.
A stock s1000rr is quicker just about.. But requires more skill and more balls.
Anyway, I ride a bike for the feeling it gives me, and love how you can go fast for little money.
Would I drive a supercar if I could? Of course, but i'd have bikes too.

I can honestly say if I was a billionaire I probably wouldn't own a supercar for the road (and I dont class the gtr as a supercar as its a practical car). You just can't use it and you pay through the nose to keep it.
Something like an rs6 or similar, a car that works in the real world and is bluddy quick (driven one) when you come across that few metres of uncongested road.

Not many cars can beat a superbike for sheer acceleration, especially up to 150 ish, your top end cars will have more power at higher speeds.
When I had my sprint I had a play* with a f360 on the mway, he kept slowing down and booting it to try and pull away from me, I kept up with ease, I overtook him and gave him the same chance, let's just say I didn't see him again lol
*all kept below the speed limit and no racing was involved :)

A friend of mine owns a couple of Skylines, amongst others. One of them is an Endless, it's a bit nuts on the road, the wet stuff makes it an interesting drive.
He uses one of them as a commuter, blooming nutter. He used to ride of of the original Buell Firebolts, says much about his personality.
Personally, much as his cars are pretty to look at, that's where it ends for me. Bikes are my fun, and when you have one of those considered a warp factor bike in your stable....
What more could you want? :-D
Apart from a Nissan Note in beige ... That's how interesting cars are for me.

Have a test ride on a super fast bike.
You will shat your pants, while laughing your socks off. Your right hand will shake at the thought of turning the throttle too much(seriously) . Then, when you hand back the keys with a drip white face
You can say, that were bloody brilliant I want another go! ;-)

I used to have the 33 GTR which was rapid. I loved that car and would love to own one again. It's much easier to muscle a car around a set of corners quickly than a bike, and it's also a lot safer ... but there in lies it's weakness. Bikes are a dangerous thrill, and in this day and age, we all need a bit of that in our life to remind us we're alive.
Also, traffic and costs. My gixxer cost me £1700 and the fun doesn't come to an end when I come up behind a line of cars. Bikes are just so much better, so long as you can deal with the weather/luggage/gear practicality issues.

I agree. I do prefer bikes, but the fastest one id ridden as to yet is my SV aha. Although its fast enough for the road, it doesnt give that 'wow' factor anymore.
I know r35 gtr's (550hp model) are expensive, and the running costs are unreal. Plus everything is recorded for the next owner to see (how many times its used launch control etc). I thought it was all too much, as i can open my bike up wherever i like and not worry about resale value or depreciated.
That was, until he booted it though. Its soo fast. You must have to be an F1 driver to keep one of those on the limit.
I like your thinkin Dizzyblonde. I might just do that. Now what do you recommend?
I cant really afford to buy a superbike, but maybe somebody does a decent size test ride, if he happy to give it em back with a stain on the seat haha.

Essentially, what you are really saying is, your SV is feeling a little slow for your desires?
If it's the only bike you've ridden, perhaps a different bike and not necessarily a massive super bike will suffice? Just a bike with better brake and suspension will meet your needs.
It's not necessary what others suggest, more of what floats your boat.
The world is your lobster, I'd say.
Everyone always suggests their own bikes when someone asks a question of 'what bike'. I wouldn't suggest the ZZR much even though it's pretty much the dogs dangles for the purpose of this thread, and only riding an SV. nor the Raptor either coz everyone always says it's ugly and crap. But then none of them are likely to have ever ridden one ;-)

The fastest and quickest bike I have ridden is an r6 after my sv. Made it feel like a moped!
Opened it up and afterwards you couldn't pass an atom through my but it was clenched so hard. You don't need to go big if you've only ridden an sv to get a serious thrill!
So on that basis if suggest starting with an inline 600! :)

Go and play for a day on the Nurburgring if you really want to see how cars and bikes compare. It will take a seriously expensive supercar to match your lap time on a bike (assuming similar skill and track knowledge for driver and rider).
Getting a bit more specialist I'm lucky enough to do the odd special stage rally with my SV. My stage times on fairly narrow and twisty lanes, often with marginal surfaces, compare fairly reasonably with a top of the range Group A rally car.
In our real world driving on public roads you should always be driving/riding at a speed that allows you to stop in the distance you can see to be clear (sorry, I've gone all Roadcraft on you) so cars can carry more speed in certain circumstances, for example into a blind corner in the wet. On the other hand the rider can move around more on the road to improve their view (for example into a right hander) and as soon as you come up behind traffic it's no contest......
I also think bikes can make far more unobtrusive progress without upsetting people, chucking nearly 2 tons of GTR down the road on the limit has the potential to make an awfully big hole in something.....

That is a seriously quick GTR! There was a chap on an IAM skills day at Thruxton with a GTR. He could alter the BHP from between 600 odd up to over a 1,000 just by twiddling a knob on the dash. On the "upper" setting it was scary as hell, he did his best lap times on the lower setting.

Spank86 has a Thunderace he doesn't want which he'd let go for £900. Reliable old litre lump of butt clenchability. Money is no excuse! That's what makes bikes so awesome. You can get something that'll do 150+ mph for under a grand, and if you buy the right one, it'll also be in half decent nick.
Does it not also has a spare key somewhere near loomies?

To me, cars are just more expensive to provide the same thrills. I used to have a Z4, not the M unfortunately, couldn't afford the insurance at my age, right from buying it, right up until I bought the SV I thought, this is pretty quick, and it was a bit of a giggle. To match the thrills of the SV for acceleration and that feeling when you stick it in a corner just right, I recon I'd need to spend 15-20 grand on an E36 M3 and about 3 grand year maintaining it.
I mostly agree with WB, If I was wealthy, I would have something like an RS6, which would get used a lot, and I'd only use the bike for getting around a city or in good weather. It has the practicality but you can have some fun on the way. I would also buy a supercar, would be the second car. If I were a billionaire i wouldn't give a monkeys about 5k a year servicing to drive it about 3k miles. Also being a billionaire, I imagine some of the shindigs you'd go to would benefit from turning up in a Lambo rather then a family estate, even if it does have 600 bhp.

If I was a billionaire, I'd buy you Clive, put you in a box and poke you with a stick. I'd have a room in my house called "The Clive Hive" and my guests would go in there and tickle you. It'd be great. I'd also open a food bank and change all the labels on the tins. I'd also spend all day walking around in full medieval plate mail and pay people to come onto my land and grow vegetables, and I'd walk among them and they'd have to lay down and create a human path. I'd open a school where kids have to go to and from classes in go-karts. I'd surround myself with buxom wenches who responded only to the command "service!" and would have to sprint towards me, pushing each other out of the way, like the lynx adverts. I'd run away giggling. It'd be hilarious. And I'd cure aids, but the cure would turn you permanently pink ... aids or pink?! It's a tough call.
Ahhh. The possibilities.
If I was a billionaire id move to Abu Dhabi, but a new Porsche 918 and a YZR M1 and spend my night blatting round Yas! I'd spend the days on a deck chair watching fallout mince around his utopia and laughing everytime he had to do anything in full plate mail!

It's a fallacy that full plate mail is heavy mate. Now when I put my Ed 209 costume on, then we're going to have issue.
Didn't say it was because it was heavy.
Just awkward. Think it's bad trying to take a leak in a M/C one piece Hahahaha

There are paintings of medieval knights doing flips and other acrobatics in full plate armour.
A suit of armours not very good if tripping over can turn you into the equivalent of an upside-down turtle.
Of course since fallout has all the musculature of your average wet noodle you probably have a point.

That's as may be, and I don't dispute it. But neither have I done something similar in a Lamborghini Aventador or a Ferrari Enzo, which I imagine would be quite exhilarating. I've never been in a properly fast car.

Would turning pink really matter to you, do you get let out your gimp suit that often anyway?
On a bike, I feel like I am literally hovering/flying over the ground. They don't compare to cars, and Ive driven some fast ones.
Cars equal comfort and blasting some decent heavy metal/house music. That's about it.
Fast cars are fun, fast bikes are fun.
Luckily I have both :D
otaylor38
22-03-14, 09:16 AM
Haha id love to have both!
I'll have to fit a fair few boilers to fit to get a GTR though aha. The running costs are sill too. I think its safe to say id never have one.
Its well worth goin on a supercar day or something ClunkintheUK. Its really opened my eyes to say the least. Iv been in fast cars before, n theyre alright but always knew bikes were faster. The GTR though is just immense.
My mate whos got it has plenty of experience with fast cars, n the hes the best driver i know. In the gtr the other night, he was struggling to floor it even in a straight line. Its just soo fast, and because it was damp it was spinning all 4 wheels and constantly pulling in different directions.
How anybody can say they easy to drive fast in the wet, iv no idea hHaha.
Well my car is nowhere near as fast as a GTR, it's a 3.2 V6 TT Quattro, It's great fun though, especially when the weather isn't great. If I'm honest sometimes I enjoy driving it more than riding the bike. Only problem is, cars get stuck in traffic.
You don't have to spend tons of money to get a fun car to drive though, You can get a decent hot hatch for around £3000 which will put a smile on your face, an early Civic Type R would fit into that budget.
Iv never really understood it. I mean, bikes are clearly faster.
and snowmobiles are even faster. there are stock sleds of showroom floor that will do the quarter mile in 9.0-9.1 range, couple a 800 or 900 cc 2 stroke triple with CVT.
even the slowest sleds can do 0-60 is less than 4 seconds
And jet fighters are even faster!

Bikes are accessible performance. I bet I can insure a 250hp turbo gsxr11 a lot easier than a 250hp car let alone one that will be anywhere close in performance!

Snow mobiles might be faster mate, but theyre abit useless in Buxton at the heights of summer when i fancy a blast haha.
I agree Yorkie_chris. My sv insurance is £200 full comp this year, and my 70hp fabia is £600 fully comp. so for a fast car, even a hot hatch, id be payin a silly amount.
I cant see myself with a fast car for a good while, i am gonna have a faster bike when money allows though aha.
Saying that though. My mate is only paying £1500 for him and his girlfriend on the gtr, and hes only 25.

Going back to the billionaire topic (albeit briefly) I did some contracting for a very rich chap some years ago. Before he flew back to the UK from Jamaica he would send a lackey down to his vegetable patch wearing a miners helmet with a mounted webcam (wired - this was about 15 years ago) so that he could choose which carrot(s) he would eat when he was back at his country pad.
amazing. The things you can do with money eh...
