View Full Version : Monthly Run - Trip To Kinlochleven

Ok guys I'm a little busy with other things at the moment but I'm thinking about heading up to see Helen and Mark at the MacDonald Hotel at some point in early May so thought I could make it an Org run.
The options for days for me are the 11th or 18th of May.
I was thinking about going up using this Route (https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=Stirling+Castle,+Stirling&daddr=Aberfoyle+to:Brig+o'Turk+to:The+Green+Welly+ Stop,+Crianlarich+to:Macdonald+Hotel,+Kinlochleven&hl=en&sll=56.419978,-4.608765&sspn=0.963148,2.106628&geocode=FY5hWAMdXMTD_yFn-0EV-wRQfCmn1TwokmKISDFn-0EV-wRQfA%3BFUJCWQMdZwy9_ynvPLeQcPeISDENF_VVofMqVA%3BF RgGWgMdzHi9_ynb5ovLjPCISDFhjxXhYilN5w%3BFZItXQMdPx e4_yFKlfGE7FgU3Cm9iJJ9tx-JSDFKlfGE7FgU3A%3BFbFsYQMdayK0_yHVPiNapDqVCCkFkd20 HS6JSDHVPiNapDqVCA&oq=pow&mra=pr&t=m&z=9) stopping at the usual Green Welly on the way up.
Coming home I was going to use this Route (https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=Macdonald+Hotel,+Kinlochleven&daddr=Taynuilt+to:Crieff+to:Stirling+Castle,+Stirl ing&hl=en&sll=56.419978,-4.608765&sspn=0.963148,2.106628&geocode=FbFsYQMdayK0_yHVPiNapDqVCCkFkd20HS6JSDHVPi NapDqVCA%3BFVEKXQMd8w2w_yndvNxYhBSJSDEk9e6jbjx2Dg% 3BFeY8XAMdNmDF_ymvCcBDTiaGSDFXiKisCzg-Jg%3BFY5hWAMdXMTD_yFn-0EV-wRQfCmn1TwokmKISDFn-0EV-wRQfA&oq=crieff&mra=ls&t=m&z=9) once again stopping at the Green Welly and Probably in Crieff (to say good bye to Lance haha)

Route up. A question, can you ride up the road on the northern edge of Loch Katrine. Just wondered as the better half and I are going up at Easter for the weekend:).
carelesschucca
02-04-14, 09:40 PM
I don't think there is a road on the north side of Loch Katrine. The road on the south side is a dead end and as rough as you want it. There are nice views at Stronachlachar and Inversnaid Hotel but not much else out there. Its been over a year since I've been along the B829.

02-04-14, 09:48 PM
When I booked in to the bunghouses for the GM I also booked in for Easter weekend. So will take the better half on the Loch Katrine boat if we have the time on the way up. I'll have an explore at the same time.
Nice routes as always.

The maid of the loch is a lovely looking boat and its at the end of the dukes pass. Double win!
There's also Rob Roy McGregors grave about 8 miles up the road near Balquhidder it's nothing special but a nice bit of Scottish history and going to the end of that road gives some no bad views.
there is a service road but it's not open to the public coz the locals are Teuchter sheep shaggin inbreeds that think everything belongs to them.

Both days for me seem ok at the moment .. I'll bring the sv so there is at least one there !

If the three above you come too. there'll be plenty of SVs.
Either suits me but voted for 18th for Peter :)

I may well be hungover on the 18th of May. I'm being forced to take my nephew to the Scottish Cup Final the day before and if by some miracle we do happen to beat The Dundee Arabs I may have to celebrate.
But I will be coming on the run.

28-04-14, 07:48 AM
So the public have decided that we go to Kinlochleven on the 18th May.
Start point for the run will be the Stirling Castle carpark. Meet at 10:00 for a 10:30 departure. Route will be as shown in the original post.

Dean, you do know that they charge to park at the castle car park?
I wondered about that. Dean will probably just apply his famed and patented Fort William petrol station technique. There's probably more subtlety to it of course but the basic principle seems to be to just ignore any queues, people in the way, bystanders, toll collectors, rule abiding pedants, other subserviant lickspittles and what have you and just zoom straight to wherever you want to be. Simples! :p meh, pay, schmay!

Never paid to park up there in my life I was up about a month ago parked up wandered about went to take photo's froze me arze off while I smoked smoked a fag and left if I was meant to pay I certainly didn't. Only thing I nearly paid with was my life when some cheese eating surrender monkey thought he had right of way and pulled out in front of me on the way up.

If its a worry I can find somewhere else to start us off, just thought it'd be nice to get photos up at the castle. Thats if they've moved that big blue box that was there when I was last up.

On the parking question, I was sad enough to look it up. No definitive answer other than they state a price for cars but don't mention bikes. Staff there are normally good eggs anway unless it is mobbed. Sounds free to me!

Ha, that'd be no use - if all goes to plan I'll be sat waiting on you lot to rock up at Stirling Castle! ;)
Doing the guts of the run ain't the problem, it's just having to be back down this way on time afterwards is the issue.

I need to get back to Falkirk for about half five so if if time is marching on and you need a bail buddy then I may join you!
Missing the mighty Bairns in play off action for this. Aargh! If the weather is truly shoite, the footy may yet win. Looking forward to a good run though...
Quite doubtful making this due to impossible to remove exhaust studs and my radiator fan disintegrating as I went to take it off the old radiator! Anyone who has any stud removal ideas let me know :) So far we have attempted to weld on bolts but generally the weld breaks before the stud comes out...
So basically getting the bike back on the road and Mot'ed etc etc on Saturday is unlikely, gutted...
thats a shame m8. you'll make the next one :-)

Got my revit waterproofs from Firecrest in Glasgow. A shop I'm starting to like being in. Good range of gear they have, most of it in the higher price range. But its a decent shop. I think most of their trade is online as the shop is always fairly quiet. The irish boy that works there is always helpful.
anyway back to Sunday, here's hoping it clears up and we get to play, I have a back tyre to scrub in.

I was going to cancel cos the forecast is heavy rain every hour of the day up at Kinlochleven... but at the moment it is forecasting dry for around the Moffat area all day so I would be back in if it shifted to the borders.
I would also be up for a run the following weekend (conditional on obtaining passes etc)
Go for the borders.:riding:
