now we all know the police have anpr
I also know private company's have it
so I was wondering would you be allowed anpr on your bike to spot unmarked police cars
knowledgeable people of the org begin

I can't think of any laws against it.
It might be less useful than you imagine though, could instil a false sense of security and then get you pulled for speeding by a car it didn't spot.

..And it's only as good as (well less as I;ve heard accuracy on the car mounted ones is bad enough) the database it has, which I'm presuming is populated by the public so will always be a little behind the times.

Great in theory. In practice, how distracting is a little screen flashing away with "Rozzer Alert" (or whatever you've programmed it to come up with) going to be? You won't get done for speeding because you'll have disappeared under an artic you weren't looking at.

Not very I'd imagine.
I mean we all manage to focus on tens if not hundreds of things at once when we ride so what's one more?
I don't fall off my bike if a policeman switches on his sirens or if a traffic light turns from green to red. I can even look down at my speedo without veering into a hedge.
I should get a badge really.

Current anpr systems are way too big and clunky to mount on a bike.
Then you'll need your own database system, with info you'll get from.... where?
Can't see the government sharing that info or allowing that type of device to be marketed to the public.
Not only could be used to elude Police but could potentially endanger their lifes as well.
I see big brother hanging on to anpr for a while yet.

ANPR started it's life in the private sector, it was originally designed by a factory owner who wanted a means of opening his gate automatically for his staff and not just anyone.
There's nothing to stop you doing it in theory, all you need is a camera with an appropriate lens rate (about 600 fps), some kind of computing ability (quite small these days) and either a screen to display information or perhaps an earpiece to sound a buzzer. You also of course need a source of reliable data.......
Legally you might be on dodgy ground if it could be shown the only reason you have it is to avoid prosecution for lawbreaking (perverting the course of justice). If however you could show that you were one of these sad individuals that likes to collect pictures of police cars you might be able to argue that is what you have it for.
From a practical perspective you would be wasting your time and money. Just about the only time it might warn you of the presence of an unmarked car before they already had what they wanted would be if you bounced it on a dual carriageway, and then it would have to be in the lane immediately to your left (ie: not the inside lane of a motorway where they generally lurk waiting for some prat to tailgate past ay 90+ in the outside lane.....
Personally I'd just advocate riding halfway sensibly, using speed appropriately and keeping your eyes open. Seems to work for most people.

indeed red , tbh it was a proper what if scenario, and if any reason why hasn't it been done, soon I will move onto something akin to , would fitting a nvg system to you helmet be a help or hindrance during night time riding, I just think of random **** quite a lot as all who have met me can attest

Oooooh
Erm, if go both!
Brilliant for if you are in the rr's end of no where with no alternative light sources.
Def bad times anywhere else like in town, the light flare would do you more harm than good.

What Red said.
For the record, the most accurate sources are the DVLA and the MIB but you have to pay licence for the pleasure of having that source. You will also need a 3G phone data package to allow transmission between the ANPR and the database.
Most unmarked cars can be distinguished if your looking constantly. If its a unmarked SOCA vehicle good luck spotting them.
Anyways ANPR's seem to have this problem...

Sorry DJ.
None taken! TBH I was thinking along the lines of a 7" screen (big enough to actually read) and wondering where the hell it would fit on the bike.

You're either working with a different DVLA/MIB database to the ones we are...or your other sources must be horrendous....
The best ones are the lists we put together ourselves, ie: those vehicles known to be associated with criminals and criminal activity because we weed (nick) them regularly. They can also be run on a stand alone basis so no need for any 3G connection, which you can also do with the DVLA/MIB lists provided you download them on a daily basis (and then accept that they may be a few hours out of date).
And to quote another Orger recently, if it's a SOCA car you can tell them to "shove it". They have no power to stop you. :D
Possible stupid question time Red... What's a SOCA car?
