Howdy,

I bought myself an '04 plate SV1000 today after having my 2006 R1 stolen a week ago :(

Anyway, had it for all of a few hours and already thinking of ways to improve it.

The brakes are woeful - not much feel (fluid's fine), I believe I can bolt in some GSXR calipers? What year are we talking?

Rear shock, it's plush but not exactly full of feel, what will bolt in there, I imagine a GSXR shock again? Also, what year(s)?

Any other mods? The throttle has quite a bit of play before it reacts, the cable coming off it with what looks like an adjuster - worth toying with this to get rid of the free play?

Thanks!

brakes are gsxr brakes so if there woeful they need a service
rear shock well how much do you want to spend, a simple spring change for your weight can do wonders or Maxton penski shock etc
r6 throttle tube conversion for the uptake

Yoshi box and setup or power commander
decent zausts

that should keep you going a while

Skips thou benefited from a power commander & a remap, which improved the fueling & ride ability he said.

Service brakes & change lines to Hel or Goodridge, if they haven't been done already

Brakes - yeah, gonna strip them down and replace the seals and fluids this weekend, pads look meaty enough.

Rear shock, quite content with a Gixxer one - just need to know which year will clamp in, don't mind chopping the battery tray if needed.

Fuelling seems fine as far as a v-twin goes - so not going down that route. It's literally a commuter/weekend scratch toy until I get another R1, then it's being relegated to year round hack.

It did make it smoother but if I am honest if I had my time again I don't think I would have bothered...

mine's certainly not unsmooth - Steve Jordan can do a direct to ECU remap for £140, gonna give the bike a strip down and check over this weekend and see if it needs anything I'm not capable of, if it does I'll hand it over to Steve to work his magic and ask him to throw in a tune as well.

Much smoothness can be added with some decent TB balancing. Mine had a shudder about 3k which I lost with some balancing. What I did find though is that the balance changes as you increase the revs so I got a much better result by balancing at higher than recommended revs. So I get a less smooth idle but super-smooth where you actually need it which was about the 2.5 - 3k mark. Above that it's all good anyway.

I think it's the GSXR1000K3 shock with red spring that is the right length for the SV1000. How heavy are you ? KAIS serviced my standard rear shock with a little valving alteration for about £120 I think and I'm more than happy with the handling. I about 160 lbs.

155lb or so at the moment, increasing slowly with training. With gear on you could add another 35lb to that though I reckon.

I had TuneECU for my street triple, anything similar for the SV or will I need vacuum related gear?

Yoshi box works like a tune ecu iirc

I think there are three software packs for tuning Suzuki ECU's. Yoshi ( basic ), Tekka and Probike which is supposed to be the best. PM SVracer ( I think ) to get the full story. I've been trying to find somebody in the frozen north who tunes with Probike with no joy. Front brakes are very good and coating on the pistons seems to keep them sweet. Try a really good clean with the piston extended a bit before stripping them, unless they are leaking or seized of course. Braided lines, EBC HH pads and a regular bleed keeps them keen.

Sweet, will be working on the brakes this weekend as they're far too weak for me (coming from a Street Triple R and an R1 anyway!). I'll also have a look out for those tuning options you mentioned as I might go down that route at some point.

Yours is a K3. All later models just had an S for Suzuki on the tank.

ahhh ok, so I'm assuming that sk4 rider seat wouldn't fit? Also, is the pillion seat any different? There's reasons for all these questions btw!
