View Full Version : Clicking Sound In 3rd

Hey guys,

Noticed a strange clicking sound coming from the left side of my SV this morning, only when in third gear. Anyone have any clue what this could be?

I can whip up a video tonight when I have it on the stand at home.

Cheers.

Here's a video of it, though it's a lot more noticeable than in the video.

I have just changed the oil & adjusted the rear wheel, hence the tub of oil on the floor!

what you are hearing is drive chain chain slap. nothing to worry about.

It seems more than that Bib, sounds like something's loose, pretty sure I hear it separate to the 'slap'.

Thanks for the reply.

Sounds silly but have you checked the chain for damage? or the sproket?
My old speed four had a clicking sound around 20mph that turned out to be one side of the chain link snapped and hitting the sprocket cover, was only noticable around this speed!

I've checked the chain and both sprockets for damage, had the cover off and the sound happens when it's on the stand.

Had a local mechanic have a look and he doesn't exactly know what's wrong with it either but he definitely noticed the problem.

Assuming I get a full gearbox for £100 he quoted me about £600 in all to fit it.

I'm gutted.

there is nothing wrong. mine does the exact same thing on a stand, its a v twin. if anything your chain is a wee bit slack or rear wheel is slightly misaligned.

now if you could hear the noise while out on a run then i would be more inclined to say there is something wrong.

I can hear it when riding it - as soon as it gets into 3rd, that's how I noticed it to begin with. The mechanic took it for a run up the road and also noticed it, he wasn't sure he believed me until he took it out.

are you sure that its only in third?

i cant hear anything in that vid apart from drive train noise. could you upload a vid with a constant throttle of around 4k revs?

when was the last oil and filter change done?

It's definitely only in third and it's as soon as you engage the gear.

Will upload that video tonight no probs.

Filter was done just before I bought it off Nobbylad (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=201191&page=10) and I did the oil last night.

How old is the chain?

I've had chains at the end of their life start to make a clicking noise. I was not able to find a stiff link and it was properly lubricated, but clearly one of the links was not happy and making a noise as it went round.

I would want to be 100% certain before looking at the gear-box, it's a very expensive fix and certainly wouldn't be my first thought.

See if you can tell roughly how regular it is, the speed of the gearbox output shaft is pretty fast, if it was a missing tooth or something it would have to be happening at that sort of frequency, a chain will make a much slower noise as it rotates at a lower pace than the front sprocket to go all the way round.

It seems to be pretty intermittent actually, sounds almost like a train to be honest!

Here's a video of it in 3rd going up to and down from 4k RPM. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60g3Y9PeRCE)

And here's the same thing in 2nd for a comparison. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1hs_WzYDE0)

It's noticeable especially at the end when the RPMs come down.

i'm still saying drive train noise. only real way to tell would be to take the chain out the equation. if only the third gear was duff then you would also feel it while riding which would be a pulse.

But if it was drive chain noise wouldn't it happen in the gear above and/or below?

Does it make any difference if you load the chain up slightly with a little rear brake? I would be very surprised if any gearbox issues presented themselves as a "clicking". Normally you get one horrendous clunk as something significant breaks and then no drive, or a persistent whine that just gets worse and worse as a bearing breaks up! When you last changed the oil did you notice any metal in it, tends to sparkle a bit as it lands in the pan.

The oil seemed normal yesterday when I changed it. Dull.

It's actually persistent when riding it in 3rd with high rpm, and it's kind of a click/clunk noise - kinda goes with the drive if you know what I mean.
Thanks for all the replies guys.

The more I hear it, it sounds like a playing card in a bicycle fork, constant. As soon as I put it into 3rd I hear the noise (I think I heard it a bit with the clutch in also).

Bit more info as I'm still trying to find out for definite what's wrong.

It's definitely only in 3rd - I hear the noise (a constant clicking when riding) as soon as I let the clutch out. Seems to be more prominent when accelerating or decelerating, I barely (if at all) hear it when staying the same speed.

I have a similar problem too. Though ive not noticed a nouse because my exhaust is too loud. But in 3rd and only 3rd I can feel a ticking through the bike.

Gearboxes whine then growl then BOOM.
Or they start jumping out cos the dogs are worn.
Or they constantly grumble cos bearings break down. Then there's a big bang and oil all over the back tyre as the output shaft bearing collapses.

Tapping is almost always one link in chain is either stiff... or pitch of chain is changing across one link cos one set of pins are more worn than tothers making one link too long. This one jumps on and off the sprockets instead of rolling.

Don't go pulling gearbox in bits, don't be silly. If you think this, drop oil through a pillowcase and past some magnets. Gearbox losing teeth (clicking) would be teeth or lots of metal in oil.

Okay I plan on changing the chain very soon, thanks for the advice guys.

I'm also noticing a strange "jingle" with the throttle / any vibrations. Is this normal? I'm feeling like a bloomin' hypochondriac!
