Gravel for drives

Hi,

I have quite a big drive - about 10m square at a guess.
I need some more gravel and I'm trying to identify something suitable but I don't know how much to get. Does one normally require less gravel than expected or more?

Quantity required in cubic metres = Area in sq metres x depth in cm divided by 100

Depends on the type of gravel and the depth required.

I find to get a decent coverage you'll be talking about 25kg doing between half and 3quarters of a square meter.

I always find I need more than expected.

Part of the problem is that most companies seem to sell it by weight rather than volume.

It's 20mm gravel I'm looking at but I'm struggling to find anything vaguely similar to what I already have so I may end up getting more to ensure decent coverage. Drive on slight slope as well. I'm hoping that I'll be able to get it delivered to various places on the drive to minimise lugging it around which would probably kill me.

But I found I usually underestimated when ordering for my drive.

From my experience, don't buy limestone gravel of any type, it's too soft and washes/wears away.
I work on a one ton bag per 9 sq metres (3m x3m), sometimes it's too much, others too little, if you use a 10mm stone gravel then that will cover more area than a 20mm.

If you want to do an area to park a vehicle on then buy some plastic driveway supports, basically a heavy duty plastic mesh that takes ridiculous amount of load and stops the gravel sinking over time.

Bear in mind that it tend to look different all wet in the bag than it does spread out.

I've got a couple of samples from companies but not found anything which is a good match so far.
The pic below doesn't really show it but the gravel has quite a lot of quartz pebbles in it.

SP1: I like the idea of the driveway supports but it does sound a lot of work without specialist tools (i.e. something to scrape away the existing gravel whilst I install the supports). I assume it's not expensive to buy, the cost would be the effort of installing?
Hmm, looking at this (http://www.matsgrids.co.uk/plastic-paving/69-plastic-paving-mats.html), it looks like quite an effort to install. Having said that, as the drive has been installed maybe it would just be the last piece of installation I'd need.
I'd ideally like a soakaway installed on the drive (quite why there isn't one, I don't know) but the quote I've been given are prohibitive.

You could save a lot of money by gluing rice crispies to your tyres for that gravel drive effect !!!

We have some stuff on the desk at work that gets sprayed on and makes it glow in the dark. £72sqm but it sounds quite cool.
