View Full Version : OMO Recommend me a handheld GPS
So I have been looking at a handheld GPS unit for walks/cycling/geocaching etc and have seen the Garmin Dakota 10/20. Does anyone use one or could recommend one?

I've been using the Etrex 20 for geocaching for a year and its superb.
Interfaces with geocaching.com directly, 2xAA batts last ages. Beeps as you get close, holds all the cache data text etc. MUch more accurate and stable than a phone app.
Waterproof.
Can hold the whole of UK openstreetmap.

I've got a garmin 60csx, tbh I'm not really fluent on how it works.

I had an etrex a long time back when I was trekking around Canada, it's a nice sized, easy on batteries and compatible with everything out there I think

Mobile phone with GPS App?
Mobile phone with GPS App?
I have a Sony Xperia T and the thing chews through the battery like you wouldn't believe when running things like Waze. Not waterproof either.
Phones will eat the battery up with a nav app.
I used mine on" AR 14 the return ", I had to use only the display before turn option(co pilot )to get home as even with a charger plugged in it won't last. And gets very hot!

It's waterproof Z1 with the mag doc lead

Didn't realise there were any fellow geocachers on here. I just use my iphone and struggle, massively :/
Might have to start a geocache thread for you all!
Had a look at the etrex, doesn't the little thumb stick get in the way?

No, its very functional, I think they have got it about right.

Admittedly yes they do use a lot of battery. An external battery makes it last tho'.
Well I have been looking at the etrex and the specs seem pretty good. Seems to tick all the boxes and has a compass which the Dakota doesn't.

compass works too, but its a gps compass so you need to be moving. Good for guiding you to the cache though.

I'm also a cacher, I've had an etrez 30 which was good, now use a Oregon 450 and it really good ,not cheap new though
Also use iPhone 4s but it eats battery, works well though but drifts a lot under trees etc
I have picked up a Dakota 20 from Ebay. Seems a pretty good bit of kit so far. Only played around a little. Compass works without moving which is handy.
