So the A6 where I live is closed from 7am to 3pm on sunday for a sporting event. So does that mean I cannot leave home? How do people get to my house?

OK I can understand through traffic that has an alternative route. But how the feck are locals supposed to live?

Tim, you have the sympathy of most of the people who live in Surrey. They suffered a LOT with the big cycle rides closing half the county several times over the last few years. Glad I don't live there.

This is push biking. part of the ironman contest. In previous years they have just screwed up the roads locally. This time it is the road off the cul-de sac I live on. Last year it was chaos as cars/pushbikes had to get on with each other. So this year the locals loose out.

Can you park your car somewhere that will stay open so you can get out?

When a man wants to moan don't be giving him practical ways out of his situation.

My understanding of closed roads means the road is closed so you can't use it :plod: :smt045 ;)

Winner :confused::confused::confused:

Must be a pain, although don't they generally try and not keep them shut all day?

How does it work?

The Police show up, barricade the road, feck the locals.
End of.

You can always call an ambulance.

Sorry.

Be glad you are not in the US where they would decide (after doing this once) that a new road is needed, spending millions of tax dollars and they must destroy your neighborhood.
Then offer you about 1/3 of the property value. If you refuse then they just seize it.
But the fans can now get safely to the stadium without traffic delays.

Set your neighbors house on fire then follow the fire engine out once it's all sorted.

Depends on the event

When the Tour of Britain went through Suffolk the other year, the roads were closed for the day.

Sorry to poke fun at you Tim, I understand it is a pain for you.

How can one bike race take so long to get past, don't they all go off at the same time and pass your road as a big lump of bikes?

I live off of a main road that is used in the Swindon Half Marathon. Once a year they cone the roads off and close them ready the evening before. However they are still open for the locals and access until the morning of the race. Once the race is on the road is closed. However if you want to get in or out the race marshals will signal you across when there is a suitable and safe gap in the participants.

Last year when the race was on I needed to leave and come back. I had to wait a whole 30 seconds for a clear gap. Not much of an inconvenience in the grand scheme of things. Its once a year and enables 100's if not 1000's to have a little fun. I'm not bothered about that 30 seconds.

But this got me thinking, The Government has just announced that they are to make it easier to close roads and suspend speed limits for motor racing events. Thus I propose the Yorkshire TT for 2015. I know of a nice little cul-de-sac that can be used as a paddock, the locals will love it...

Some races are time trials rather than mass start.

Fair enough, I only see the Tour De France on television, the other races I see are as I pass them in my lorry one at a time, no roads closed for that.

...or more specifically a mass time trial called a sportive, there can be thousands of entrants and each entrant has a timing chip.

If you watch the stage on 26th July then you'll see how a time trial stage is run. The roads are closed for the whole day, as riders will often do a sighting ride of the course.

In a triathlon don't forget there will be different classes , mens, women's etc. These will be run seperately to avoid congestion and accidents on the course.

Having seen all the "road closed here next week" signs when passing through your area a couple of years ago and reading about the multiple times a year it happens, I decided to avoid the place entirely from now on. Just in case. It was also the reason for my post on page 1 so it's good (not the right phrase, sorry) to know the locals feel the same.

They're still supposed to allow access for residents and emergency services.
It's a complete pain though, at the moment I'm facing a 4-5mile detour for the next 5 or so weeks because they've shut 400yards of road outside my accommodation in Lancaster. It's bloody marvellous.

Perhaps my question as to how they work. Is that there is a yellow notice on a couple of lamp posts saying the road is closed. (Actually I walked down some of the lanes after dropping my bike off for an mot a few miles away and they too have the closed signs) But these temporary plastic information signs do not comply with any legal requirement for a road closed sign.

When I leave the cul-de-sac were I live and turn right. It is 400 yards before I see a sign. Is a copper going to stand on every adjoining road/driveway saving sorry mate your staying put for the next 8 hours?

Doing the walk down single track country lanes, with steep hills and tight turns, tree lined, covered in moss and soaking wet on this the hottest day of the year, I at least now know where to go to see some spectacular crashing.....

and a nice real ale pub by the canal at the top of hill.

when they run Eastleigh 10k they just have marshals at the roads preventing traffic from pulling out, and yes they stop everyone for about half an hour or so.

I'm a bit lucky, iron man closures misses me by a couple hundred metres.

Traffic is going to be a nightmare though!

fine if you have to wait 1/2 an hour on a Sunday. But these signs are saying 7am to 3pm. An 8 hour shut.

The road is offically shut, but there is usually restricted access for locals when there is a sutible and safe gap. I'm surprised that as an effected resident they havent sent you some information. May I suggest contacting your local council?

I always run it so It's never bothered me.

Perhaps as it's closed for longer they will be letting people out but I wouldn't bank on it. Personally I'd suggest planning something that either keeps you in or out all day and not running the risk.
