I drive a German car so obviously it's never going to break down but just in case I am too lazy to check the tyre pressures or fill it with petrol I have RAC cover.

This has just expired and they want around £80 for renewal, the cover I have is the one where they take your car home rather than just to the nearest garage.

Anyone know of any better/cheaper cover?

Cheap is fine until you need it, I'm with swinton, it covers me for any vehicle I'm in or on, doesn't have to be my vehicle either.

I get AA cover with my value added current account. They have been excellent. It also covers mobile phone insurance, travel insurance, credit card insurance and all those things.

Try phoning RAC and ask for their best price as you have been made a better offer. If they offer a better price without putting you on hold then ask if they can improve that price further.

Mine dropped from £85 to £56 for 2 named drivers, Roadside rescue any vehicle, not Homestart.

RAC - me and the mrs on personal membership (any vehicle, to anywhere in the uk) for £112 a year all in. Covers us in the car, and on all 7 bikes, as well as any vehicle we're with or in. Perfect for our needs.

I had AA and they were useless both times I needed them. Money wasted.

Just got a quote from Start Rescue, £25.85 for the same level of cover. Read some online reviews and they seem to get more positive ones than RAC and AA.

Can't be bothered claiming back as you have to do with AutoAide.

I used to recommend Rescue My Car .com

however recently their cost has increased a bit and after my last collection where they sent eh biggest pikey with the worlds dodgiest truck with no paperwork for the journey and a 2 hour wait I was not impressed -

I will be upgrading my current account shortly which includes breakdown through green flag amongst other benefits. -

Will cover us in any car.

That's the trouble with them, as they use contractors, not their own fleet.

They were cheap, but as you say, not so good anymore.

I'm probably going to do the same & upgrade my bank account and get the benefits of breakdown cover & mobile insurance with my account.

Which one, Halifax or Nationwide? I have accounts with both?

50% of the time I have called out RAC they have used a contractor, and they have always been good so not worried about that. I might look into one of those fancy bank accounts.

Check what type of cover you get with upgrading your bank account. Its usually pretty basic and you have to spend more to upgrade the breakdown cover which aint that much different from actually doing it direct.
