Hi guys,

I have a suzuki bandit 600 and i currently have heated grips running directly from the battery, they are on a on and off switch but i'm wondering if i can stick a 12v phone charger/usb directly to the battery, the cheap ones i have looked at do not have an on an off switch so i would like to know if the charger is drawing power even if the phone is not plugged in? also if it is ok to do, would it effect the brightness of my lights or drain the battery too much if i have everything running at once??

any help or advice appreciated??!! :D

much depends on how it's used really, generally if only used for phone charging or a gps of some sort you should be fine on that front, however as I presume your heated grips aren't ignition controlled; you could leave them on when you park up, in that case they'll drain your battery in a hour or two (depending on it's condition of course), both running when the bike is in motion will be fine and no resulting "dimming" should be evident if your charging system is working as it should.

When the bike is running there should be no problem running both. But leaving the heated grips on when you park up can be a problem.

Heated grips typically draw about 3 amps, so they'll drain your standard 8Ah battery in about three hours if you leave them on. IMO it's worth adding a relay which disconnects them off when the ignition is off.

Most simple phone chargers draw something like 1/100th of an amp. Providing you ride your bike once a week you won't even notice it's there. If you're leaving the bike for a few weeks in the winter you probably want to unplug the phone charger and use the socket for your battery charger.

Just my thoughts,

Keith.

it's better to run as much as possible within reason when your bike is running as then your Reg/Rec is not trying to shunt as much heat.
