View Full Version : Car, what should I buy

Budget is around £10,000

I need to be able to seat 5 adults, comfortable for 150 plus mile journeys.
Must have boot capacity for at least 3 large suitcases. In the past Passat failed this basic requirement. Looks like it has a boot. but a useless one.

Reasonable performance and last at least 5 years

annual mileage 8,000

Any recommendations, I have been looking at Modeos, Insignias, 508 etc. What else should I look at?

I have an insignia estate 2.0 diesel Ecoflex
Best car I've ever bought. 700 miles to a tank.

Yes, the 2.0 Diesel looks the better. The 1.8 Petrol appears to be a little underpowered. My last Vauxhall was a 2006 1.9D Vectra SRI which has clouded my judgment when it comes to Vauxhall as it was lacking refinement, nav system was CD based and cost a fortune to update. Not exactly comfy for a long journey and for a diesel quite thirty.

But most worrying was at 900 miles the oil level dropped sufficiently for the level light to come on. I topped it up but there after had to keep any eye on it. Worrying for a brand new car with a 20,000 service interval if you were the sort not to do anything under the bonnet.

Skoda Superb.

I love mine. Limousine cruising, plenty of power and 55 plus mpg.

Tim I just paid that for my 7 series, see my thread on IB, it's just so comfortable, big boot, pretty economical, and unlike many of the 5 series it doesn't rattle or feel plasticity. Maybe a slightly leftfield choice, but due to the depreciation on them you can get a lot of car in great condition for your budget and I reckon you'd easily get 5 years out of one.

For 8000 mile a year I wouldnt get a diesel.Too many potential expensive problems with modern ones compared to petrol, and not enough fuel savings to offset the risk.

Now don't dismiss this right away, but a good friend of mine has just bought a new Kia. The car is lovely, is very economical and has a nice interior.

It also has a seven year guarantee! The insurance is cheap and who would want to nick a Kia? The best part? It cost the same as a five year old Mazda.

In my view the Mazda was prettier, but I was not the one trundling up the motorway for two hundred miles per day, five days a week for work.

Have a look at them and see if they appeal. :D

Skoda, absolutely.
As late as 2010 you can find the PD engines which aren't as bad as modern common-fail sh*te.

2nd that, we bought one of the 2010 1.6td Fabias, what a pile of rubbish. Kept it a year before chopping it in in an almost direct swop for a 2009 1.9t model which is better to drive, better on fuel, and far more reliable.

I've been driving one of these we borrowed from another team for a few nights and I am impressed, its a bit tatty inside but for a 55 plated cop car with 104k on the clock it still flys :plod:

Yes avoid the diesel http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/news/11007326/Diesel-car-drivers-betrayed-as-EU-cracks-down-on-Britain-over-air-pollution.html

I've been very happy with my Mondeo estate. I bought a two year old ST220 for £11k and have driven 50k miles over the last 7 years in it. I'm not sure about three adults in the back for long journeys, but three kids/teenagers would be fine. From a driving perspective I like the stiffer suspension and reasonable performance of the ST220, but it does come with a hefty tax bill.

Until last week it had started every time without any problems. But I suspect that a large infusion of flood water affected the starter motor. This has now been replaced.

I took a quick look on Fleabay and unfortunately the £11k I paid for my ST220 wouldn't buy a decent 2.2 Titanium, so they might be a little out of your price range.

Just my thoughts,

Keith.

If you want a Mondeo wait until the new version comes out late this year or early next - prices will drop.

I have been told by my stepdad to avoid diesel cars built after about 2008 as costs to replace basic items are huge (injectors for example need to be coded to the car and are a fortune).

Just got an Insignia estate on test and it's rubbish. Layout in the cabin is not driver friendly, touch screen is silly, temp for climate control does not register half the time, seats are very uncomfortable... test drive one if you can because some people love them!

Skodas are great, I have a Passat at the mo and its great, can fit 4 adults in comfort and can take 4 cases plus laptops so not sure why you had a problem? That is the latest Passat I had.

Buy BMW if you want the best though - some people hate them too though as RWD but everything seems to be built with the driver in mind in them.

Yes it was the older passat that my dad had and when I borrowed it, I had to return it as we could not get cases in.

I have had 4 mondeos as company cars and all have had injection problems and dropped into limp mode. When I had a vectra that screwed up with an EGR valve that needed smacking every so often when it won't rev. But worse was the service issue as when I took them in with these issues, the Mondeos they reset and it goes in another 5000 miles and the EGR no fault found. So no longer in company carland, I would like some reliability

I had a passat saloon previously, the boot was big but the opening too small to fit anything in! I've got a cmax now, absolutely brilliant little car. Plenty of room in the cabin and a big boot. Drop the back seats and you've got a van.

I would suggest taking a step away from a saloon and looking at the cmax/tuaran, very versatile. Personally dislike vauxhalls so I would steer clear of the zafira.

Only going with petrol from now myself.
Diesel too risky with the potentially krippling hidden costs of duty increases and charges to use it in city centers.

I wouldn't have a mondeo, no way. Bag of w*nk delphi injection system. High pressure pump glitter bombs the injectors for fun. Like a modern day lucas pump only worse cos the bits are all so dear. Injectors are coded in place and can't be changed easily... need I go on...

. . and you can run it on chip oil, as Chris really meant to say ;)

Lol, not the PD!
Up to 05 or so you can find ones with a proper fuel pump.

Tim at 8k a year the diesel will cost more than a petrol.

I think its around 18k a year where a diesel motor becomes cheaper than petrol. I will agree with a lot of people about the current VAG diesels they seem to be crap! I know of one coming out the dealers one night and being back at 9am with engine issues (failed egr after 15 miles) and the same engine has drank quite a lot of oil in 13k

We'll I'm no expert

What about a Honda Accord.

Our works diesel ones had big boots, comfy to drive, fast, handled well and were reliable. I wouldn't buy the diesel version for your mileage Tim.

I wouldn't buy another diesel, like the others have said they're too complicated these days & don't like short journeys.

You can't use the diesel minimum millage argument on a secondhand car unless you individually work the stats out on the specific car you've found and have a equally comparable car, as main contribution to the price difference was the overall purchase price and having it dealer serviced for the warranty.

VAG diesels are fine unless you go with the 170 bhp version. My 2.0 passat has done 80k in not even 3 years and has not had any issue - most collegues with the same car have had no issues either.

I would agree with looking at C Max etc - that sort of car is good but probably isn't as nice to drive, only driven them shorr distances personally so happy to be corrected!

Glad my step dad wasn't telling porkies about the impending Diesel costs from the looks of it!

My V40 has done 250, 000 and if they do get stupidly hi fuel duty. I'll run it on chip fat till it goes bang and just walk away, safe in the knowledge it owes me nothing.
Then get an electric leaf or something like.

I've considered going Volvo.

Had two. But Qasqai +2 is the size you need to fit the op regiment.

Merc estate? My Dads C class cdi is now on pool car duties going from brighouse to south wales all the time, well into the 100k miles.
Nice engine, very quiet cruise, big boot, rear leg room, surprisingly economical.

Not sure what you get for 10k but it's a totally different class of machine even now it's 10 year old than the brand new poxhauls we get at work.

Actually not a bad suggestion TBH.
10k gets anything from from 2009 with upto 100k on it (ultra fast autotrader search).

I would never entertain a vauxhall built after 2007 as they're crap. The current insignia seats make a battered old van seat seem luxury

I would not recommend a nissan Juke - the boot is too small.
I would however recommend a Nissan Qashqi petrol with all the toys.

and Tim look on the Pennine Massive threads LPH is after a cottage up north to rent for a fewdays.. I know you rent / own /which ever...
one over Hawes way :)

I am thinking Qashqui as ok when work have hired them for me, I once tried a juke. with 3 football mates in the back, it was a never to be repeated one off.

I am currently driving an A5 (work not my own) surprisingly small in the back, not much more than a juke. But a huge boot. Would be more practical but not as pretty to do less styling and give it more rear leg/head room.

Richie was going to suggest mates place at Askrigg to LPH. But he is currently not letting it out as had problems with a set of guests who thought it funny to trash it.

I don't think I'd have a nissan these days after succession of wank navara exploding engines affecting a few lads I know, one older one throwing a leg out of bed and a new one spitting camchain off.

Most had new engines under warranty. Even well past the manufacturer end date /mileages.

New Qasqai (J11) is no longer available as a +2
You have to go new X Trail.
