Petrol tank sealant?

My old Z750 is leaking from around the fuel level sender unit. It looks like it's been a problem in the past as there is some sealant around it already.

Any recommendations for a suitable sealant? Stuff like Blue Hylomar and the usual Halfords range all say that they're not suitable for sustained exposure to petrol.

Real life experiences would be appreciated!

Take it out.
Get some nitrile sheet off ebay and cut a new gasket. You'll have plenty left over for other purposes as well.

The blurb on that says that it isn't suitable for exposure to petrol...

Or is that just **** covering?

Nitrile is the same stuff fuel hoses are made of.

Probably buttcovering, but if you want to be absolutely sure, if you can find some to SAEJ30R6 spec, it'll be absolutely right for this purpose.

Alternatively have you tried somewhere like cmsnl.com and seen how much a replacement is? Might not be too costly.

I would strip the tank get the crap out and either seal it yourself with <<CLICKY>> (http://www.frost.co.uk/automotive-car-bike-maintenance/automotive-tanks-products/por15-motorcycle-fuel-tank-repair-kit.html)
or go to a specialist which will make sure its good for another 40 years+. These are getting a good review up north http://www.fueltanks.co.uk/

The tank is sealed with POR15. Fantastic stuff! I've done two now and I'm no longer getting any problems from rust in the tank.

Taking a closer look yesterday the problem seems to be that the sender unit body has cracked/distorted and is now allowing a bit of fuel out. Probably have to take it out and bodge a plate over it with some of that nitrile sheet as a gasket.

I had a tiny hole in my tank and bought some Plastic Pading Leak-Fix from Halfords and it did the job.
