Has anyone been? We went to Aachen last year for the Christmas market and we have booked to go mid December this year for a long weekend. I know there is a tower with a rotating restaurant and obs deck, but was wondering what else there was to see?

I have been, It is a great place. I'll be honest even though I have been there twice I mostly spent my time around the Altstadt (old town) drinking an eating so I don't know too much about the general tourist attractions. The Altstadt is also on the banks of the Rhine which is huge and fast flowing as it goes through the city. There are boat trips on the river also and bars/cafes along the bank.

If I were sober for more than a few hours of both weekend I have been there I am sure I could have given a more informed answer, apart from it's awesome!...

Did you go up the tower?

I have been up the TV tower yeah, very nice views as it is by the river as well. Don't remember a revolving restaurant bit (though I do remember one in Stuttgart) but it may have been the level above the obs deck which I didn't go up to. I think there is a big xmas market (like every German city) on the Marketplatz. I practically lived on Bolkerstrasse where bars and restaurants all spill out along the entire length on the street.

The market is the aim of the trip, but just figuring out what do do during the day time. I need to start brushing on my German!

Yep! The Aldstadt is also called the longest bar in Europe. Have you booked a hotel yet? The area round the railway station is dodgy but there are loads, such as the Max Hotel Garni, which has free beer and is awesome. Near the Aldstadt are the Excelsior or the
Berial, both of which are good.

The Christmas market is spread across the town, not just in one place, so get a guide leaflet thing and go for a walk. In the evening it's a proper rugby scrum for the gluhwein stands. The whole place has a great atmosphere though.

Go to Heinemanns, there are two shops, one has a cafe above, you can choose a cake downstairs, tell them it's for the cafe, they give you a chitty and you go up and hand it over when you get the rest. Best chocolate in the world or I'll eat my shorts.

That's all I've got really, we mainly got ****ed and loafed around. Block House in the Aldstadt is good for steaks, or Zum Schussel for traditional German fare, and you "have to" go to Urige, very traditional German bar in the area too. Out of town there is an awesome-looking indoor skiing place. If you have time to get bored then get a train down to Cologne and nip out to the market near the catherdral (Dom) which is right by the station.

We have booked the Ibis over the back of the station, got underground parking for the car which is good.

Anyone know where I can get a UMWELT sticker in the UK? Dusseldorf is a green emission zone and requires one or face a 80e fine.

Edit, seems I can order one from the TUV-Nord people. 12.50e. Some private company wants 30e!

To be honest I found Düsseldorf to be my least favourite town in Germany and I lived there for 10 years.

What didn't you like about it?

I don't really remember now mate. I think it was just how the place felt if you know what I mean. I'm going back 20-30 years ago though.

Randomly I was there on Monday.

Not really seen enough of it to give you any advice, I only stopped to have lunch there because both of my little sisters spent time there au-pairing. Seemed nice enough, had a very good coffee and a bit to eat. Both my sisters loved their time there though.

Love the efficiency of the Germans, the sticker has arrived already.

It was great. Very fun times in the old part of town, which is very lively.

The park by the congress center is worth checking out.
