James, that's awful, hope your insurers deal with it all swiftly and get you back on the road.

Hope you get it back. Might be worth checking with neighbours for any cctv coverage, you never know.

God, sorry to hear that James. You only got it a month or two ago didn't you?

That's not good. All I can see of the original post is a full stop. Has something changed?

Any 'good' news yet James?

Unbelievably it has been recovered!
Although typically I found out about 5 hours after buying an old hack to tide me over.

It's currently being 'forensic-end' as the woman on 101 said.
Apparently there is only damage to the ignition...
Waiting to find out more

Please tell me it's not still possible to steal a bike just by screwing the ignition. Push it away maybe but actually ride it? Really hope that is all the damage you find and not just a police description........

Mostolder bikes don't have immobiliser as standard.
So Jimmy the lock and snapping the steering lock is no biggie

This is an 11 plate Triumph...... Even my K5 SV has a coded key.

Yes my 2006 rsv had a cooded key.
But not sure if the pre side exit trumpet has a chip as the salesman made a song and dance about it on mine!
I still lock mine soon as I park it on the drive even if it has a chip as it's easy to push along like I've seen in a video by another bike

I'm not really sure what to expect as this had been the first thing I've ever had to claim for.

I would concur with the lack of code on an SV.

I had a spare key cut when I bought my bike as it only had the one key.
Which I didn't want to lose.

Purchased online. I doubt it's coded for a tenner - it also looks like a cheap piece of ****e- curse online locksmith's.

But starts my bike fine. Plus it only sits in my sock draw as a spare.

Good luck with the Insurance - and not to offend too many of the insurance folks on here.

But the ins. people I've had the misfortune to deal with are all *******s.

Well I've been a right mug then! When I got my SV like you it only came with one key and when I asked at my local dealer about getting a second one they told me it had to be coded to the bike and quoted me an appropriate price tag for another one..... so I've never bothered. As a result of what you've just posted I've checked.... and you're right. Oh well, live and learn!

Coded stuff from suzuki has a SAIS stamp around the barrel.

The coded key locks aren't cheap to replace and need to be dealer installed as most are coded to the Ecu

Does anyone here have any experience of insurance companies and recovered vehicles?

The bike is currently in the Police impound, having been released. I have told the insurance company about this (last Wednesday 10th sept) and they said that they will get their vehicle inspectors to go to the impound and sort it all out including covering the storage fees.
Fair enough.
However, it's still there, and if not collected by 22nd Sept will be disposed of/sold off.
I'm not sure if I should go and collect it myself just to be sure or just pester the insurance company?

Pester the **** off your insurance company but let the police know that your insurance company are sending a vehicle assessor.

Exactly what i've been doing.

So it's been collected today. And being dealt with a company called '4th Dimension'

A quick Google throws up mixed feelings about them. I was hoping that it would be repaired by a Triumph main dealer, but it seems not.
Either way, I haven't had a choice in the matter. It seems they are Bennetts' de-facto repair contractor.

I'm not sure what the process is from here.
If it isn't written off, and repaired by 4th Dimension, I assume I am within my rights to refuse the bike back if not satisfied by the repair?
I was hoping (due to the age of the bike and the fact it was almost mint with FSH and very low miles) that it would also get a good going over by a Triumph dealer. Who knows if whoever pinched it, got it started and ragged the t*ts off it.

Have you seen the bike? Has it been on it's side? A quick look at the back tyre will tell you if they've been doing doughnuts etc on it, plus how much fuel was in it when stolen? Have they screwed the petrol cap? You have to be a dedicated nutter to ride a bike hard enough to do much damage to the mechanical's inside a tanks worth of fuel.

I've not seen it yet. It was recovered by the rozzers, and taken straight to the impound in Perivale. 4th Dimension have picked it up from there.
All I have to go on from the Police is what the chap who found it reported "doesn't look to be much damaged, only the ignition".

Red Herring

I wouldn't be to worried then, but obviously ask to see the proposal from the repairer to see what exactly they are going to replace/repair and make sure you're happy with that. I don't think you can ask for a full service and new tyres just for the sake of it but you should at least get it back in as good a condition as it was before being stolen.

16-09-14, 01:11 PM
Yeah, I thought as much :)
To be honest, I just want it back as it was when it was nicked.
I imagine this will take some months... Good job I picked up an old hack last week then

Just make sure it spends the winter in a nice centrally heated warehouse and not stuck under a tarpaulin round the back of the workshop.

Just to make you aware, when the assessor comes out to look at it, they will try and write it off for the smallest of problems.

I may not have had a vehicle stolen, but the sheer idiocy I have just with an 'assessor', which I use the term extremely loosely, is enough to make anyone feel sick!

Be like a bull at a gate if you want it back, and be sure to tell them you don't want it down as a category of any kind, if it is minimal damage.
You really need to see the bike yourself. I remember a friend having a KTM nicked(twice) one of those times, it was only the ignition apparently. When the poor chap got his bike, it was smashed up all over, and not how they described.

Fourth dimension have differing reviews. Friend of mine recently dealt with them, and has felt nothing but praise for their service. I'd be inclined to get down there before the 22nd, as then it will be on your property. If my bike had happened to have been taken elsewhere after my little escapade, I would most certainly have never got it back!

Unfortunately they have already collected it.
I shall, as I am not far from them, request to see the bike once they have made their assessment

I had no issue with 4th Dimension when I used them in 2012. They contacted me over the parts as mine was running some old and one off crash protection.

I got mine repaired as I agreed that items were omitted or repaired (tank dint, mirrors, horn and repaint over replacement)

Andrew, I had a test ride today on a street triple. It whined like a kicked puppy but the salesman told me that that's normal. Is that right? I walked away because I knew the sound would drive me nuts. Having said that, I did like everything else about it.

Just search on YouTube for a video, but the later models are whiney
