View Full Version : Ear plugs
Oh mighty Org,
I'm looking for recommendations for good quality but not too pricey ear plugs?
Any suggestions out there?

Disposable or reusable?
I've a set of those 20 quid pass through plugs you find at bike shops, the ones that let through the audible range. They're ok.
I most often use a set from a large bag of earplugs though, I've lost the packaging to it. Earplugs are designed to withhold a certain level of volume ( dB ), I think your best bet is trying Amazon or eBay for a large bag. Comfort is going to vary based on ear shape and size, so it's try a few and find what fits best.
I've actually read there's a site that sells a collection of earplugs, like 20 different kinds, and they offer one bag which has one of each kind of ear plug they sell. It might be worth looking for that.

I use R&G diy molded ones. About £20 I think.

I use Howard Leight - the green ones you can get 200 pairs in a box for about £25 off ebay. I got my box at the start of last year and its still going strong. I normally use a set of plugs for a ride or two then bin them. They're an essential piece of kit for me.

I use the normal yellow ones you get given for nowt in work. Always used them, can't ride without em now.
Thanks for the feedback guys. I also use the cheap yellow ones, but now I'm looking for a good quality reusable type that fit good, work well and last a long time. A quick look at custom made plugs put me off because they're comparatively expensive.

R&G DIY ones.
I've had mine for over a year now.
They give you enough goo to do a replacement too.
Second vote for Howard Leight Max Lites - been using them for years and whilst they're a disposable you can get a good few wears out of them (unless you have manky ears)

Another for Howard Leight - the rhubarb & custard ones for me:
also posted this on another forum:
" I think Howard Leight used to do ' taster ' sets ( NO don't eat them ) for a small fee.
Not now sure it was them, but petersplugs.co.uk do them: £2.99 for 10 pairs. £5.99 for 18
Haven't tried them from him, but worth a punt for finding something that suits? "
Hey guys.
Why do you wear earplugs?
Obviously to drown out sound; but I love the burble of my exhaust, it's intoxicating! Is it to reduce road & wind noise? Do you still hear the exhaust?
I only ride for pleasure when I get the time, so no commuting, would you recommend I get some? It's not a part of 'the kit' I've thought of before
Never ride without them. They're essential as they cut out high frequency noise like wind blast which stops you gradually going deaf! Look it up on the web but I think at 60mph the wind blast is 100db which is very damaging to your ears. Makes no difference to the noise the bike makes, you'll still hear it perfectly

There's some on eBay too but I find foam is best. There's a how to on YouTube on doing a DIY with foam earplugs. Might give it a go myself

I use howard leight QD1... The orange ones with the centre "stick" inside.. They fit perfect ..
And Mandy finds them brill ....to not hear my snoring ..
You need to try them out really, the 'Christmas tree' type ones were awful for my ears but clearly work for some
I don't like to use them on the bike but I have to use them in bed as the wife snores a bit,I use the silicone ear plugs or wax ones from Savers, about £2 a pack and they mould into the ear nicely once warmed!!!
I've ordered myself some of the R&G DIY ones today.
I struggle with getting earphones or my Bluetooth hands free thing to stay in properly, so decided against the cheap disposable ones, and went for the custom fit ones, despite being dearer. Hopefully they fit and work well.

I use them because as soon as you get above maybe.. 50? The wind is noise is rubbish. Can't barely hear the bike unless you're pushing towards redline anyway. Also to protect your hearing in the long term, besides you can hear the bike when below 30 which is when the non stock exhaust gets a little addictive.
When I first tried out earplugs I found it really weird, I found myself going faster everywhere and having my cruising revs higher. Must be that I was relying on the sound a lot. Got used to that now, and I try and keep revs down if I'm not out for twistys or overtakes. But now if I'm travelling more than 10 miles I'll always wear them, I find it so much less stressful and I can put even more attention and focus than I would usually on road awareness, positioning, cornering etc.
Mostly everything you hear at 50+ mph is just noise, no need for it. (Except maybe horns and service vehicles (and when you mumble to yourself) but you can hear all this with earplugs in!).

Never could get any of the standard earplugs to fit and stay in.
With doing a fair amount of motorway i ended up getting custom made

by Hearing Resolutions in Bolton.
Excelent noise reduction though you get some 'rummbling' with head motion as they go way into the ear canal. After 3 years they are still as good as new. At the discount show rate i believe they are worth every penny.

Essentially so I don't suffer hearing loss. I've been using the cheapo disposable type. I can still hear the engine and exhaust. The main reduction is wind noise. My helmet has exhaust ventilation vents at the rear and they make a right din at higher motorway speeds.
Oh, and the cool racer dudes use them therefore I must too ;)

I have a set of them, pretty decent at letting the noise you want in (talking, sirens to an extent) and pretty decent at filtering out the noise you don't want (wind etc.) especially compared to the Howard Leight ones I have been using.
Possible not as comfy over long distances though, start to ache after an hour/hour and a half, but they do fit in well and don't come out. They are still in good shape after 3 months of 2 hour a day usage at least 6 days a week.
The Howard Leight are good at quieting everything (including sirens) but you can't hear to talk with them in, and they do occasionally come out, good for 6+ hours in the saddle though and cheap, last about six months a pair using them for at least two hours at least 6 days week.
My R&G DIY ones arrived Friday. Really easy to make, seem to fit really well.
Very effective in the house! Haven't been out on the bike yet though, so will update once I do.

The left one seemed to go farther into my ear than the right. Not sure if that's just the shape of my ear, or I pushed the putty in too far while making. I trimmed it down with sissers. Still fits fine, still fills my ears. Just doesn't go in as far now.

I've been meaning to update this...
I've done about 60 or 70 miles with them now doing a few shortish trips, and I'm very impressed.
They fit really well, are comfortable to the point I forgot I was wearing them, and they do a great job of keeping back the wind noise. They did take a bit of getting used to, mainly because it feels like your ears fill the helmet more! But it was only for the first few minutes and I guess that's to be expected.
I do have to watch my speed more now though. I'm used to changing gear and knowing roughly how fast I'm going by the noise of the engine, but as its quieter im leaving it longer to change up.
Overall I would definitely recommend the R&G diy ones. They're a good price, effective, and most importantly they're comfortable so I don't mind wearing them.:D

I like the way the earphone are quite flat and don't appear to stick out too far. I see you can buy the molds to use with other specific earphones, so you could buy some high quality ones if you wanted to
I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to audio, I got these free but I'd go for the moulds and attach them to a decent set if I was buying them.
