I know it's the Mirror and hence pure speculation no doubt but food for thought, who would you prefer gracing our Top Gear screens? So many folk have thought Top Gear has gone downhill in recent years, is Chris Evans the injection of new blood it needs? Or is Clarkson's disobedient boy charm all part of the entertainment?

Am i not right in thinking that clarkson owns the rights to top gear ie when he decides hes had enough thats it, unless he keeps selling the rights on the beeb or the highest bidder? Hence why he's rather rich selling the rights around the world? (on top of his bbc pay packet)

He sold his share a few years ago, so the BBC owns it outright now. Not sure if he's written anything into the deal though...

From article
Under Clarkson’s current contract he is paid a £1million fee per year, as well as an annual sum of around £3million from BBC Worldwide for Top Gear *merchandise.
He previously owned a 30 per cent stake in a joint venture with the BBC, which owned the commercial rights to the hit show, which regularly pulls in six million viewers.
But the BBC now owns the rights to the Top Gear format, name and intellectual property, making it easy for them not to rehire Clarkson, 54.
He probably has enough dollar not to give two hoots about the show anymore and pass the baton on but I personally like him on the show, I like Evans too...on the radio, not so much on TV.

I like JC, wouldnt be the same without him. Evans' petrol head credentials are right up there, but I dont know if it would work without JC, part of it is the banter / humour between JC, May & Hammond...

If they changed clarkson it wouldn't surprise me if the other two went out the door if not at the same time the shortly afterwards, within two seasons anyway.

I think the Beeb should bin TG.Its a time expired format that has been milked long past when it should have been allowed to die.It used to be amusing, but now its just boring,so I dont bother watching.
I watched the American version of Top Gear a while ago. Exactly the same format as our Top Gear but with US presenters. Without Clarkson, it just didn't work. I only watched one show.

+1
I have the option of watching either. The US version was terrible even though it used the same format.
Without Clarkson don't look for the show to continue much longer.
As already mentioned it's the banter between it's current hosts that makes the show.
And of course the Stig is a legend.
It used to be the weeks must watch tv program about 10 years back, but the last few series haven't brought anything new. Mind you, if you think it's boring now, have a look back of the original series with old farts like William Woolard reviewing this year's exciting new Austin Montego. :smt015
It's probably still too lucrative to shelve, so maybe new faces & format are overdue.
bridge over the river cowk!! was entertaining enough, but yes i dont watch it these days.

I think this story is BS tbh, I've heard they have already starting filming the next series.

Doesn't that apply to a very high proportion of programmes on all channels?

Evans is just too annoying for words, I'd rather have Sabine Schmitz presenting than Chris Evans.

And fast too. No point sending the Stig around a disused airfield with all these expensive cars. Just let Sabine take them for a gentle pootle round the 'ring.

I think we should petition the beeb, we want Sabine :makelurve:

Maybe something to look forward to then. Most of the entertainment is the boyish lark between the three musketeers on there, Evans would just make it all too serious methinks. Outrageous pranks are a must on Top Gear, it's unfortunately not got an awful lot else going for it any more. I'll still keep watching it though.

As well as being a bore William Wollard was also very anti motorcycle. He took a pop at our hobby at every chance he got.

I've gotten a bit bored with TG. Same stuff every series racing a car versus May and Hamster to somewhere in Europe or north America. It needs something new, something different.
I dare say the new series will be chasing across Europe, America, or somewhere buying clapt out on bangers and crossing somewhere we would all love to go to.

I suppose the Hamster and Captain Slow's take on bikes overrides Jezza's opinion on that score though. Maybe those two should branch out and do a similar show to Top Gear but on two wheels :D:D:D

Rather than replace Clarkson, why not add Sabine Schmidt as well?
That would make it different, and inject some new blood. I bet that would be an instant hit.
Might be hard to do, she'll be hard to steal....

Isn't Sabine the Stig already?

Unfortunately not, Sabine is a bit of a shorty and it's quiet obvious when she's driving. Look at the height of her shoulders in relation to the seat back. The lay of the seat belt is a bit of a giveaway as well....

I'm pretty certain the stig is not one person, but at least two, and as many as 4 potentially. At least two of who are current/retired F1 drivers.
Body language tells a lot....

Is that a euphemism?
I think what has killed Top Gear for me is that every day when you switch on a TV, there is an episode playing, often more than one and it is the same old episodes again and again and again. When the BBC and Dave cross over and show the same episodes in the same week it really does start to get silly.
As for Jezza, he does play a fabulous caricature of himself. I have serious doubts that he is even half as thick as he acts on TG. Having seen him on other things and given that he enjoys creating controversy, I very much doubt that they could find a more contemptible man or woman to play his role.

He's not thick, but he is most definitely an arrogant ar5e. Don't get me wrong, I'm one of the biggest fans of Top Gear and Jezza, however I've met him several times now and as an individual I see nothing attractive in him whatsoever! When that bridge comment incident came out I tried to convince myself it wasn't intentional, however it clearly was and that's Jezza through and through. We all love someone who is prepared to challenge authority and take the mickey, but there is no need to get abusive at the same time.
