I've noticed that the aircon in our car has started making a low volume air hissing or sucking type noise when it kicks in, which it didn't until last week. It's lasting maybe 5 or so seconds.

Is this the first sign it needs a recharge, or something else?

Most likely it's vaccum operated vents in the dash opening/closing and is nothing to worry about as long as it's still cold and blows out of the correct vents.

It certainly can be the early signs of loss of gas.

If it needs a recharge then Amazon Local deals were doing an offer with ATS for £33.

Plus if the system is leaking you don't pay, but check the small print

Got to be a scam.
Get car in.
1/Check for leaks with the uv lamp.
Maybe sqirt some dye were you can easy replace a o ring.
2 / when connecting machine say that the caps need replacing.
3/Recover gas, oh you need new wipers
4/vac system. Oh your brake pads are wearing down.
5/ nitrogen pressure check.
Noticed that the oil is black, how about a oil service.
6/vent nitrogen and vacuum.
Oh we do have some tyres on offer.
7/ add oil and re gas.
Oh your tracking needs adjustment.
Oh that's £600 in all sir lol

No, I didn't have any of that.

The terms & conditions of the Amazon offer when I took it out, was that if there was a system leak, they would not attempt charging the A/C and you would get your money refunded.

You're only taking it in for the air con recharge and not a full service, so you're not obliged to have any other work done or checks carried out, even if they advise it.

I had a new tyre fitted at the same time & they didn't try any other monkey business.

Sometimes these deals are just what they are & the bloke at ATS even said it was a good deal.

From my experience, I would use them again, which is maybe why ATS is doing this.

ATS are pretty good at doing stuff for free tbh. They do a wheel alignment check free too. My dad has had a few free things from them
