My 15yr record of not having an accident had come to an end - taken out by a car at all of 15mph by him deciding to turn right whilst I was alongside him.

Currently in Southend Hospital with a broken collar bone, some broken ribs, bruised lung & generally battered all down my left hand side.

My nice Rukka gear and new Shoei lid are no more - jacket and trousers cut off by paramedics - they were so apologetic !! Lid took quite am impact judging the state of it.

But the bottom line is I'm still here & it could have been a hell of a lot worse.

** UPDATE **

Attended the fracture clinic today and had the multiple pressure dressings removed and replaced with a normal dressing over the steri-strips. Apparently the procedure went well despite an unexpected bleed that the surgeon said raised his blood pressure a bit as well as causing some "excitement" in the operating theatre!!

The bike has been written off as among other things it requires either a complete engine rebuild or a new engine and that isn't deemed financially viable. I've agreed a valuation with my insurance company so all I have to do is send off the V5 and for the first time in over 14 years I won't own a bike.

kaivalagi
14-11-14, 10:10 PM

So I have to ask...what's the next bike going to be? Another beemer?

Not sure what I'm going to do yet.

It will be several months before I know if there will be any permanent impairment to my shoulder or left arm which could decide for me if or what I ride in the future.

The other thing that has been playing on my mind is the look on the boys faces when they saw me lying in A & E - something I never want to see again or for them to have to experience.

So, we'll just have to see what the future brings.

Yes this is a big thing

Younger kids make it harder.
But equally you have to be hard on yourself and weight up your enjoyment, practical use of the car /public transport.
And playing devil's advocate, What could you have done to reduce the likelihood of a future incident.
That's something only you can awnser.
But we're respect your decision what ever it is.

Personally I have enjoyed the rideouts you have organised and would miss them.
Take your time and get fit soon :)

Littlepeahead
17-11-14, 12:08 PM
The kids will be shocked at first, then they will start telling their mates how cool their dad is because he's got really clever metal in his shoulder and proper scars and he's basically bionic!

Supervox
17-11-14, 12:27 PM
The twins wanted me to ask the surgeon if he'd record the surgery for them so they could watch it later!!

Now, having seen the dressing I have covering the wound, they are disapppointed at how small it is - "...it won't be a very large scar then will it Dad?"

jambo
17-11-14, 01:14 PM
Glad to see you're on the mend.

Give yourself some time to recover and think through what suits you and the family. Ideally that'll be another bike, but that's a choice for you guys to make yourselves. I remember my dad breaking his leg on a CB250 having decided it was a good shout to use it on ungritted roads in the winter. As a kid I just accepted he had a cast for a bit, the idea it could have been any more serious I don't think crossed my mind, but I was younger than the twins are now.

In either case wait until the shoulder's right before seeing how you feel as the last thing you want to do is buy a bike that doesn't suit you and then not feel able to enjoy it.

If it helps any when I started riding I was one of the least quick of the group I knew and I was the most keen to wear half decent gear. This is because all my family rode bikes and I knew it was inherently dangerous and should be approached with respect. Carrying on riding may not be a bad thing for the boys to see you do, but again, that's entirely your choice :)

Heal quick!

Having been told initially that I may never regain full movement in my arm after my accident I was expecting to never be able to get it fully straight. But physio and stubborness are marvellous things. The metalwork bothered me so I asked for it to be taken out, but I think in most cases these days it's left in, and airport scanners don't even set it off. It was probably Gail's reaction that scared the kids more than anything. Seeing mum upset is frightening for kids.

dizzyblonde
17-11-14, 04:17 PM
I can understand the twins reaction because of the things you described to us recently with Gail, and being a mum always have such things at the back of my mind when either myself or Pete goes out.....

However, I know somebody whose got bigger scars than you and more metal and less leg and was told he might not walk etc etc ner ner ner ner ner he got on an even bigger bike when he couldn't even walk with sticks........

Joking aside, we hope to see you next month, and maybe you will be at least able to laugh a bit more than last time. :grouphug:

Haha. This was my exact reaction after my accident! I was stupidly disappointed that the scar on my forearm is so small/clean.

Fingers crossed your shoulder/arm heals well and physio restores movement to a suitable level. I've had nothing but bad experiences with NHS physios, so I hope you have better luck, or better still, a medical plan that covers private physios (which I should have used sooner rather than bearing with the NHS ones!).

Littlepeahead
20-11-14, 12:20 PM
Hmm while I said earlier about physio being the key to my ultimately very positive outcome, what Jon knows but others reading this won't is that I am lucky enough to share an office with 3 superb sports physios who saw me almost daily. They really bullied me. But I love them for it. Definitely worth paying to see a good physio if funds allow. I'll find out if they are making another series of Splash. That's not as random as it sounds! I'm not suggesting Jon gets his Speedos on! But my guys do the physio work on the show which is filmed near Southend.

Littlepeahead
20-11-14, 10:46 PM
At the moment that isn't the way it's going. Fingers crossed that a good solicitor can get it turned around so that Jon can claim off the other party. However, if you are found to be the one at fault for the accident you have to find the cash yourself. Even if they do pay it could be over a year before it gets sorted, which isn't much help, I know Stu's case took 20 months and got sorted 24 hours before it was due to go to court.

The guidance for this type of claim had a good result for us that use motorcycles to relive congestion
That situation has now been remedied. In June this year the senior Court of Appeal heard the case of Eric Davis. Mr Davis had been filtering along a straight section of the A40 in Oxfordshire, past a single lane of stationary traffic. His speed was 40-45 mph. He was 2/3rds into the opposite carriageway. His right indicator was flashing and his headlight was on dipped beam. Mr Schrogin was one of the drivers caught up in the stationary traffic, travelling in the same direction as Mr Davis. The opposite carriageway was completely clear and the level of visibility was excellent for Mr Davis to be safely overtaking. Mr Schrogin decided to perform a U-turn with inevitable consequences. The Appeal Court upheld the original trial Judge's conclusion on the basis that Mr Davis could have done nothing to avoid the accident.".

maviczap
21-11-14, 05:14 PM
Exactly what happened to SvRich, but he wouldn't have won his case without the help of White Dalton. It was going 50/50 with the solicitors appointed by his insurers.

He wasn't happy and employed WD

garynortheast
21-11-14, 05:25 PM
And another recommendation for White Dalton. They dealt successfully with my Father in Law's motorcycle accident claim.

Red Herring
21-11-14, 05:47 PM
I'm sure Jon appreciates all the positive messages of support but I suspect it might be a little early to be quoting case law. All we know about the circumstances of Jon's incident is what he said in his OP, that he was "taken out by a car at all of 15mph by him deciding to turn right whilst I was alongside him".

If the other party hasn't rolled over and admitted liability straight away they obviously feel Jon shouldn't have been alongside them at that time, so I suspect the advice that Jon get a good solicitor is well founded.

I am in no way suggesting the driver should have done what they did and Jon is in any way to blame, but I do know that as a motorcyclist it is very easy for us to find ourselves in a very vulnerable position by just dropping our guard for a moment.

Good luck Jon, as I said in my earlier post I do hope it all works out for you.

NTECUK

Plenty of cage drivers get road blind in congestion situations.
OK we don't know exactly what occurred,But were not taking about an inexperienced hot under the collar rider.
I've had a few manover signal mirror crowed on my commutes.(two going to get my MRI done today !)
Its not in peoples nature to admit that they were not applying the rules.
They are so preoupied with their own little bubble one even missed the fact an ambulance with blues was trying to get through!
